CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS
THE END OF THE WORLD
“Come on, let’s get the car loaded up. I wanna get out of here as soon as possible, we’ve got a lot of driving to do,” Pacifica had always known her friends were the best, but even she didn’t expect them to be willing to go with her into a zombie apocalypse. It really meant a lot to her.
“What should we be packing?” Mabel asked, “What does one bring to the apocalypse?”
“How about food!” Grenda said, getting up and digging through the cabinets.
“We should bring foods that are easy to cook and that won’t go bad,” Candy said, “And that won’t use water if we can avoid it, we may need to conserve water once we get there.”
“Pop Tarts it is!” Grenda shouted.
“Oh! I better grab Waddle’s food too,” Mabel said, “I doubt we’ll be able to find it up there.”
“Wait, what?” Pacifica said, looking at Mabel with confusion. “Mabel, we can’t bring a baby pig on a quest to save the world.”
“Why not? He’ll boost moral!” Mabel said, picking up said pig and giving him a hug.
“He’ll slow us down. What if he wanders off and gets lost?” Pacifica asked. Mabel was silly, but she was smart too. She would see reason on this. “He’d be safer if he stayed home, and so would we.”
“What? Paz, I can’t just leave him here alone,” Mabel said, “Someone needs to feed him, walk him, and cuddle with him everyday!”
“Could we ask a neighbor to take care of him?” Pacifica asked, “Didn’t Ms. Ashwood watch him a few times?”
“Yes, but she flew out to her brother’s ranch in Texas when the quarantines started spreading. She said cutting off cities would lead to rioting and looting and she didn’t want to be here for that,” Candy said, “Most of the people who were in the building are either already gone or about to leave, actually.”
“Those boys who go to Canyons are still here,” Grenda said. Mabel frowned.
“You mean those wannabe frat boys who asked me if I was having a Hawaiian BBQ the first time they saw Waddles?” she asked. Pacifica flinched, she remembered that day. Mabel’s reaction had not be pleasant.
“Okay, so maybe not a neighbor,” Pacifica said, “But there’s got to be someone who can watch him.”
“Yeah. Me,” Mabel said, “Please can he come Pazzy? Please?”
Mabel was making The Eyes™ again. The ones Pacifica could never say no to. Dammit. “Fine! But if we leave the car he needs to be kept on a leash and kept quiet. Deal?”
“Deal!” Mabel said, excitement lighting up her face. “Come on boy, let’s go get your harness!”
Mabel rushed out of the room with Waddles in her arms, and Pacifica sighed fondly. Waddles would be fine.
