I don't know if you feel the same way but I get a little upset when I tell people I want to be a zoo vet and they say something like "well animals shouldn't be in zoos. So you want to cage animals?" They don't understand that NO I don't want it to be necessary for zoos to exist because animals are going extinct. But they are and they need help. And I'm determined as hell to work at a zoo to strive for more animals to live in the wild. Have you ever encountered this?

Try not to get upset by their misinformation, and consider it practice to develop a spiel for educating people that still think zoos look like this:

I used to say that I was interested in animal theriogenology, particularly for endangered canids. Your average person doesn’t necessarily know what that means and the phrase doesn’t contain any of the buzz words that will encourage and anti-zoo rhetoric.

Anti-zoo, anti-vaxxers and a bunch of people at the extremes of many movements are best described as zealots. They’re not here for a discussion, they’re here to convert you to their way of thinking with the rhetoric they’ve been fed, or brow beat you into submission. Working in a zoo is one way to guarantee you will encounter anti-zoo people on a regular basis, so consider these people practice. If they’re reasonable, they will be able to judge provided evidence for themselves. If they’re already zealots, they’re a waste of energy.

Unfortunately, our career means you have to get used to people who have strong, often hateful, often unfounded opinions about animals based on whatever propaganda they found on the internet. But fortunately, we are equipped with the knowledge and position to educate them.

I’m sure there are a bunch of zoo workers on Tumblr. Perhaps @why-animals-do-the-thing can point you in the right direction.
