The idea started out as tape cover art. But I thought that would be rather boring to have it just be a few tapes. So I created an installation that featured the tape art. But to make it more inviting i assembled various found objects including a coffee table, chair, tape player, and headphones all from the era when tapes were popular.
To make people feel “at home” I littered under the table with empty PBR cans. And added an ash tray.
And to add a little more intrigue I placed the book Lucifer Rising on the table that discussed the history of how Satanism influenced rock music. It is a pretty well balanced book. The bookmark in the book was a ticket that I had bought to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles back in 2011.
My goal was that people would be comfortable, intrigued, entertained, exposed to new music and ideas, while they got to view my own art. Though the installation is art itself, the actual original art that I made was two tape covers.
The first person that I observed at my installation was the father of another artist at the show. He seemed to be intrigued by the book.
Towards the end of the night someone had a lot of questions and it was really nice to be able to interact with a viewer. I gave him some background on the project. We discussed LaVeyan Satanism, indie music, and the user experience in art. He said that he liked how I set up the installation and compared it to going to a bakery and being able to get free samples. We also talked about the sources for the art on my covers.
The first tape cover was for a fake band “The Enforcers” whose cover includes a black and white picture that took of a police officer in San Diego in the parking enforcement division.
The second tape cover was for a fake band called “Blissful Existence” which has a screenshot of my old avatar in SecondLife. In that scene I was hanging out with my online friend Adriana “Candy.”
