Why do you class everyone but Zuko as a prodigy? I mean like Katara he went from being a "Pretty Good" bender, nowhere near Azula's level to being able to match her in a very short time without much training since he faced her in The Chase. He also wouldn't have been able to do what he did in the cooler if he wasn't a really powerful bender. Zuko seems to be often very underestimated, maybe it's because he can't generate lightning or blue flames although no one can do the latter except Azula.

I mean it’s not so much me, but the show. Toph and Aang, as well as Azula are in canon child prodigies who reach very high levels of their respective bending early compared to their age; Aang is the youngest air bending master, Toph is an Earth Rumble champion, Azula is several sets ahead of her older brother.

You are right that Katara is a different category, in that at the start of the show, she’s not all that good. But she has a lot of raw power (that’s obvious at the start) and once she gets access to training she develops at a much greater speed than Pakku’s other students - through a combination of hard work and talent.

Zuko on the other hand had a lot of formal instruction from an early age, which only still made him a so-so bender (at least my the royal family standards) and suffered a set-back at his Agni Kai. For him the way to overcome his plateau / unblock his bending was a combination of coming across other elements, informal training, overcoming his mental blockages.

I do not in any way think Zuko’s way of learning is inferior compared to the others. Each child is different, their pace of learning, the methods that work, the raw talent, etc. I don’t think not calling Zuko a prodigy is an insult. He got to very high level of bending, matching the early bloomers. Also, bending is not everything. Zuko picked up on the side swordfighting and all kinds of ninja skills which made him maybe the most versatile member of the Gaang.
