Blue Side of the Mountain
Chapter 4
Wilson x Brando | Storm Chasers
The Twisting Angels barreled their way down the country roads to the West side, going well over the speed limit as they attempted to get just a bit ahead of the storm.
Finn, with his eyes on the road, questioned the boy beside him, “So what did the cowboy want from you?”
“The exact thing you’d expect.” He kept the reply short, his gaze locked onto the cloud above them.
Fortunately enough for them, he noticed the slight rotation happening, “Looks like updraft is cycling.”
He took a quick look at the radar before pointing ahead, “Take a right up here.”
Finley adhered to his instructions, and the few cars that lingered behind them also followed suit.
“So,” Finn broke the silence within the car, “Brando Saint’s kinda cute, don’t you think?”
Wilson whipped his head to the boy with an incredulous look, “You lost your mind?”
“No.” He replied plainly.
“‘Cause I’ll help you find it.”
Finley just laughed, moving on from the random subject.
Wil observed how the wind turbines stuttered with the winds. The shaking back and forth would’ve made him think it would fall over if not due to the strength of it.
“It’s starting to form,” Finn enthusiastically said, “Just like you said it would.”
The funnel cloud was more prominent and started to travel downwards, forming into a rope shape.
Finn called to the others over the radio, “Cliff, Ethan, get your probes and get into position. Fisher, stick with me.”
As the line of the tornado began to come down more, Finley noticed how Wilson froze just a bit. A flash of concern crossed his face as he tried to check up on him all while keeping his eyes on the road, “Hey we got this, it’s gonna be okay.” He reassured him with a soft pat on the arm. “I just need you to tell me where the front of it’s gonna be.”
Just then, the tornado finally touched down on the ground. Dirt immediately being picked up by the force.
Finn let out a loud whoop in excitement, “That’s our tornado, baby!”
Out of nowhere, a familiar red truck came barreling onto the road off the right side. The two let out a gasp as Finley attempted to steady the car, however, the man behind the wheel of the truck brought them both off-road and into the grass.
The cameras still rolled as the crew shouted with thrill, “Well, hello my darlings,” Brando directed towards the many viewers tuning in behind the screen, “Welcome back, and for all of those just joining us, today is the perfect weather to be out. I’m looking at a tall rope just the North of us, and man is she pretty.”
Finley hit his hand against the steering wheel out of frustration, “Dumbasses! Acting like it’s the goddamn Wild West!”
Wilson tried to keep his calm the more they hauled themselves closer to the tornado, his hands bracing against Finley's arm and whatever he was able to grip off to his other side.
Just as the boy got the vehicle back onto the road, one of the men from the other team behind them quickly honked twice, letting them know he was aware of what happened.
Brando, speeding ahead of the other teams, chuckled lightly, “Joining us today, we have our boy who needs no introduction,” He patted his friend's shoulder, “Our storm hound Reese!”
The blonde man turned the camera towards him with a whoop, “Reese’s pieces, baby!”
Brando moved on to his other partners, “And behind us at the wheel of the caravan, we have the lovely Cherry.” The camera then cut to the vehicle to show a red-headed girl. She threw up a peace sign as her tongue stuck out wildly.
“Then of course, right by her side working the drones, we have Rose.” The blonde girl let out a screech of thrill, her hand banging against the window as they sped up faster.
It panned back to the three in the truck, “We got a new team member joining us today, Trix! You said you’re from London right?”
“Uh, yeah,” She looked terrified in the backseat, “South of London, graduated from University of Leeds.”
She sat a bit awkwardly, not used to being in front of a camera like this. The other two, however, had stayed silent as they listened to her stumble on her words.
Brando nodded his head once, “Alright.”
Rose’s voice pipped up on the walkie, “Bran, tornados on a move.”
“Alright, hold on!” He jerked the wheel to the side, sending them back onto the grassy path.
They felt the force of the wind breaking hard against the truck, making the adrenaline pump even more through their veins as it grew stronger.
“Oh yeah!” Brando whooped, “You ain’t in London no more, Trix! Pip, pip, cheerio or whatever the hell!”
Wilson just took a deep breath, trying to keep himself calm with the situation at hand. He began to unconsciously scratch at the back of his hand in an act of soothing.
“Okay, get me in front of it.” Finley said to him.
Will looked ahead of them, searching for the direction it leaned towards, “Take a right here.” He pointed to the next street.
Finley took the sharp turn, his speed only increasing to attempt to get ahead.
“Cliff, this is Declan. Tornado is moving at one-seven miles per hour.” The man stated over the radio.
“Damn,” The other man beside him said, “Dandelion dude was right.”
Declan looked at him, his irritated expression present, “Alright, who asked you man. Just keep driving.”
A loud and harsh sound crashed down onto their vehicle causing Declan to groan once again in annoyance, “And slow down, keep us out of this hail.”
Meanwhile, still heading straight towards the tornado, Brando couldn’t help but yell once the wave of hail began.
“We got golf balls, baby!” Reese exclaimed, pointing the camera in every direction.
“Well what do you think, golf balls or baseballs?” Brando questioned him.
The two looked at each other for a moment before shouting in unison, “Grapefruit!”
They barked out a loud laugh, making it impossible for Trix to hold back her smile at them. Though, the hail started to crash down faster and harder, making her shiver a little in fear.
“I’m assuming this is safe?” She asked as she leaned forward just a bit in her seat.
Just then, a piece of the wind turbine flew off, landing just beside the truck. They all barked out laughs at how close it came to them. Nonetheless, they still traveled their way along the grassy path, speed increasing greatly.
Finley honked his horn at the crowd of storm chasing vehicles huddled in the spot they needed to drive through. The loud blare caused most to jump and drop some of their equipment, while others ignored him entirely.
“Fuck out the way!” He exclaimed as they finally maneuvered their way around them.
He shook his head in disbelief before stating, “Brando Saint effect.”
“Fisher, hang back.” He said into the radio.
A voice on the other end cut in, “Copy that, hanging back.”
Wil still had his eyes glued onto the radar. He noticed a shift in the movement, focusing his gaze forward, “The path is shifting,” He said as he pointed just ahead of them, “There’s a right up here.”
Finley followed his instructions as he turned onto the dirt road.
A different voice cut into the radio this time, "Cliff here, moving into position.”
Wilson let himself take in the surroundings. The way the dirt kicked up from beneath the tires due to the force, the grass blowing flat against the soil, and the way the rain pelted and soaked every surface. It was a familiar, yet terrifying feeling that flooded his nerves.
“Fisher, getting into position now.” Wil kept his gaze ahead, just waiting and monitoring for the perfect distance. “We are active, just waiting on you and dandelion.”
“Wil, we gotta get within three-hundred meters. Are we getting close?” Finn’s voice finally cut through the air.
However, Wil didn’t respond just yet. He watched the rain pelt down against the windows in a harsh rhythm, and the windshield wipers as they began to stutter wildly. It brought his mind back to that day, the feeling sitting uncomfortably in his chest.
“Come on Wil, talk to me!” Finley desperately spoke up, “Are we getting close?”
Wilson blinked a couple times as a harsh and shaky breath escaped him. However, he raised his hand and pointed to the opening, “Just-Just up there, in the clearing.”
The boy gassed on it before turning the wheel in an abrupt stop, mud caking up on the side of the vehicle. As the two exited, they could feel their clothes sticking onto their skin from the rain.
Wilson froze as he watched the tornado grow closer, the wind rippling against him, leaving small traces of dirt behind. He could feel as his chest heaved up and down, a sickening sensation coiling tight within his gut. He was standing face to face with a monster that had taken everything from him, and he wanted to show that it no longer had a hold on him.
Unfortunately, the monster was winning this battle too.
“Wilson!” Finley’s voice yelled from behind him, “Please, I need you!”
I need you. I need you. It all echoed distantly, clawing into the back of his mind.
A sudden piece of debris is what finally broke Wilson out of his trance, a scream forcing its way out of his mouth as he fell back onto the ground.
I got you. Just hold on.
He scrambled his way back up immediately, bumping into Finley who just looked at him in confusion. Wilson attempted to push the door of the truck bed back up, but ultimately forgetting it as he yelled out to his friend, “Finn! Get in, get in!”
The younger boy quickly closed the door before he jumped into the passenger seat. Getting his headset, he turned on the radio to speak, “Hold on, guys! We’re gonna find a closer spot!”
Wil just slammed his foot down on the gas, feeling the tires spin in the mud before barreling them forward. His eyes stayed locked onto the rear-view mirror as the rope behind them still continued down its path.
Once Wilson was comfortable enough with the distance, he slammed on the brakes. However, Finley barely wasted time as he swung the door open, not hearing as his friend called out.
“Finley, wait!”
Only when he finally opened the back is the moment he decided to spare a glance behind him, his movements coming to a halt as he noticed the tornado moving in a different direction.
His hand slammed against the truck in frustration, “We’re too far away!”
A muffled tune of Riders on the Storm grew louder once a painfully familiar truck pulled to a stop beside the two.
“Twisting angels!” A voice whooped.
“Finley!” Brando called out to the boy who held a defeated look, “What are you doing all the way out here? Tornado’s that way!”
He then looked back into the driver's side, noticing Wilson’s hunched over figure and annoyed expression at the mere presence of the other.
“Hey, Wil!” A bright smile took over his features, but soon disappeared as he sped down to the storm.
A laugh bubbled deep in his gut the more they grew closer to the rope ahead. His hands drummed against the wheel as Reese punched up onto the roof, “Alright harnesses on fellas.”
“Oh, yeah!” Reese exclaimed as he discarded the camera to buckle up, “Trix, this is my favorite part right here.”
“Harness?” She questioned as she reached behind her to feel for the straps.
“Going right into the suck zone, baby!” Brando cackled as he also began to adjust the buckle tight around his torso. “Trix, get that harness on. We’re going into a tornado for God’s sake.”
Reese laughed brightly at his words, fist banging against the door to let off the pure adrenaline he felt. Trix, on the other hand, frantically pulled at the straps and attempted to clip them together; however, it didn’t seem to cooperate with her. Anxiety sunk deep into her stomach, goosebumps slowly crawling their way up her arms as she shuddered at the chilling sensation.
“My harness isn’t working!” She shrieked out, hands aggressively pulling at the straps. “Why didn’t you tell me this ahead of time!”
“Strap up!” The two men exclaimed to her as the tornado was just about to pass over them.
Trix disregarded the harness, instead just falling forward and holding tight onto the passenger side seat as they were pulled right into the core.
Wilson and Finley stood side by side, watching the red truck disappear into the funnel. Wil sucked in a breath and held it, terrified that he might have witnessed more people be taken away just before his eyes.
He was then startled once he heard a shriek and a pop, bright colors of red, blue, and green shining within the element.
His eyebrows rose up in disbelief, allowing himself to finally huff out a breath, “Are those fireworks?”
Finn rolled his eyes at the ridiculous show being given, “Unfortunately.”
Once the funnel sucked back into the sky, the fireworks suddenly came to a halt. Brando and Reese were immediately out of the vehicle jumping and celebrating like they had just discovered something huge. Their fists shaking aggressively in the air as if they had won a fight against the final boss. Trix on the other hand wobbled out of the back, her hand clamped to her mouth as she stumbled behind the truck once the anxiety in her gut decided to make its way out of her mouth.
Reese put the camera in her direction before taking it back to Brando, who barked out a laugh, “Yeah! Now that’s what I’m talking about!”
“How you feelin’ brother?” Reese pushed the camera towards his friend.
Brando took it with no hesitation, a smile still shining on his lips, “Never been better!” He then panned over to the girl who was still hunched over. “How you doing over there, Trix?”
Trix just raised her thumb up to indicate she was good, despite the vomiting.
Bran pulled Reese into frame, “Shout out to the best team anyone could ever have. Got my Reese here, and of course behind the cameras Cherry and Rose!”
The viewers lit up on the screen, hearts flashing like crazy and the comments rushing in like a tidal wave. The excitement from his fans boosted that drive for him.
“And to my viewers who were wondering, can you shoot fireworks into a tornado?” He paused for dramatic effect, “Hell yeah you can!”
“But remember,” Reese cut in with a grin, “Kids, please do not try this at home.”
Brando nodded his head, “Yeah, because we’re…”
The two spoke in unison, “Professional tornado herders!”
Wilson watched the scene play out, “He’s insane.”
“Yeah.” Finley softly spoke as he walked back to the truck, Wil following behind him with hesitation.
As soon as the doors shut, they were seated in an uncomfortable silence. The only sounds audible were their deep breathing and the muffled shouts off in the distance.
Wilson shifted his gaze to the side, “I’m sorry.” He cut into the air. “I thought I had it, and I just…”
He trailed off as he finally met his eyes with his friend. Finley held a mix of emotions, but disappointment overpowered most of all. And what could Wilson say exactly?
I’m sorry for freezing?
I’m sorry I couldn’t let you be taken from me too?
I’m sorry I'm not ready?
“I fucked up.”
Finn let his head hang a little low, a harsh swallow as he tried to hold back everything he’s bottled up all these years. However, he just looked back up at Wilson with an almost smile.
“It’s not your fault,” His voice broke softly, “We’ll get the next one. It’s all part of the gig, right?”
Wil nodded his head, “Yeah, of course.”
“I’m gonna check in with Declan.” He said before opening the door. His posture sunk with defeat as he stepped out, the door clamping shut with little force as he walked behind the vehicle.
Wilson sucked in a breath as he felt tears build up in his eyes, the sting in them couldn’t compare to the sting that he felt pinching tight within his chest. He still let his gaze follow to the mirror, the figure of Finn talking on the phone as his head shook made him break.
A hot tear trailed down his cheek before he quickly wiped it away. His fist barreled into the door as a frustrated scream escaped from his mouth.
“Goddammit!” His chest heaved as his hands covered his face, “Just be normal! Be normal.”
Normal for Wilson Taran was long gone. Instead, he carried something heavier on his shoulders with every room he walked in.

Blue Side of the Mountain
Chapter 3
Wilson x Brando | Storm Chasers
Wilson felt like he was crazy for listening to Finley. He felt even crazier now that he was on the road he had driven down countless times; the endless cracks and bumps that never got paved over, darkening clouds that were basically an everyday occurrence, and the thickening air that grew heavy with the rain very much expected later.
The car guided them through the familiarity of it all. However, Wilson glued his eyes to an overpass they were coming up on. His body stiffened as they began to go under, the object dimming the light from the sun for a short period of time. He allowed his head to turn and watch as it disappeared in the distance.
With a controlled breath, he turned back straight in his seat. Unfortunately, this did not go unnoticed by Finley, who took one of his hands off the wheel and patted Wilson's leg in an attempt to comfort him.
“Not gonna lie,” Finley started, “I didn’t think you’d come.”
The other boy just shrugged his shoulders in response, his eyes instead going to observe the equipment that he held in the vehicle. A new model laptop sat at the front picking up on the storm moving in, a Canon EOS R sitting comfortably in the back along with a variety of probes.
“Nice upgrade from the old stuff, right?” He asked with a soft smile.
Wilson nodded, “How’d you afford all this?”
“Investments, buddy.” He drummed his fingers against the steering wheel. “The storms are getting more erratic, which means the team needs that constant data to warn the people of what’s to come.”
Wilson nodded as he spoke, a warm smile suddenly blooming across his face as he really took it all in.
Finn, noticing this, glanced back at him a couple of times, “Woah, is Wilson Taran smiling?”
The boy then rolled his eyes at the tease, “It’s just,” He hesitated a moment, “It’s nice seeing you do the good most people kinda hold back on. You used to just hang back out of harm's way, now you’re going straight into it like it’s nothing.”
Finn shrugged a shoulder, making it seem like it wasn’t a big deal, “A charming quality, is it?”
“Very charming,” Wilson replied back.
“Think I could pull someone with all this?” He gestured around.
Wil huffed out a laugh, “Yeah, you’ll definitely pull with a storm-chasing Dodge Ram.”
“Dodge Ram Fifteen-Hundred,” Finn corrected immediately, “But this is just the company car, I have a legit nineteen fifty-two Volkswagen Kever.”
“No shit?” Wil whipped his head towards him, “You finally got your hands on one?”
“Hell yea I did.” He replied with a proud smirk.
The other boy nodded approvingly, “Assuming it’s also the green one.”
“Sweetheart, what other color would it be?”
꩜
The gas station they pulled up to was swarmed with storm chasers coming from several different states. It was nice seeing the types of personality when it came to the vehicles. Most wrapped in a large hail guard, accompanied by anemometers sticking straight up. However, what piqued his interest the most were the few interceptors.
Everyone was out of their vehicles, chatting like it was just a normal day for them. Like this isn’t one of the most dangerous hobbies to have.
As the two walked up to a certain group of people, Wilson knew it was way too late to turn back now.
“Alright, gather around.” Finley began ushering everyone together.
He then gestured to the boy next to him, “We all know how many times I've mentioned Wilson here.” He beamed with pride. “He has one of the best instincts you’ll ever see, and is genuinely the best person I know.”
Wilson waved shyly to the new individuals, their straight postures offered them an intimidation that made him hesitate.
“We have a very talented team in our hands,” Finn assured him, “See we got PhD’s from NASA, FEMA, NOAA, NWS.” He introduced each of them with a slight emphasis.
Wilson nodded with interest, “Got the whole alphabet, don’t you?”
“Gotta get only the best for this, buddy.” He began to walk over to a different man who stood off to the side of everyone else. “Well, except for Declan here. He went to MIT, but he makes up for it with his beautiful, charming personality.”
Declan gave a dramatic fake smile, and it vanished just as quickly as it appeared. Wilson, however, was not impressed.
Fin made his way back over to stand by his friend, “Now, Wil’s only giving us a week. But man!” He exclaimed, “It’s gonna be the wildest tornado chase ever!”
The group whooped in celebration, patting each other on the back. Their bodies shook with the adrenaline of what’s to come.
“Yeah, everyone with a puny weather app knows that,” Declan muttered monotonously. He glanced around at all the other groups, their excitement and seemingly rookie tendencies made him grimace. “Gotta stay ahead of this circus.”
Just as his sentence was finished, a sudden loudspeaker blasting an unfamiliar country song echoed through Wilson’s ears. His head snapped on instinct to the noise, and coming in through the entrance was a beaten up and rusted black truck. Shouts of joy could be heard coming from all directions the more they neared.
One of the people in the vehicle stuck his body out, a phone held on by a tripod clutched in his hands. The sudden sight of him made Wil suck in a sharp breath. He knew who this guy was.
“Hey, Twisting Angels!” He exclaimed, pointing the camera at the group, “We’re live on YouTube, got anything you wanna say?”
“Oh, suck it Taylor!” One of the men in the group called out.
Reese just laughed in response, “Chill man! Science is fun right?”
He then drifted off to where Wil stood, his eyes glistening with familiarity, “Wait, I know you!” Then the car sped off again.
Finley turned towards his friend with his eyebrows raised, “You know him?”
“He came into the cafe.” He brushed it off before saying. “Who all is that?”
“The local storm chasers from the southern edge of Fort Worth,” Finn explained.
Declan sighed with irritation, “Hilbillies with a YouTube channel.”
Just then, the driver's side door opened. Out stepped a tall and thin, yet muscular man. Accompanied atop his mess of dark blonde hair sat a tan cowboy hat. His smile brightened with the attention drawn towards him.
Reese pointed the camera in his face, “How you feeling, Bran?”
“Feeling good, baby!” His enthusiasm was present, yet he still kept a calm nature.
“And if you feel it?” He called out.
The crowd echoed back, “Chase it!”
“I said, if you feel it!”
“Chase it!”
One of the men that stood back in their group cupped a hand around his mouth, “Chase it!”
Everyone gave him a weird look, to which he ignored.
Wil could understand why he could gather an audience everywhere he went. He held a natural charm that would leave one going back for more. The smile he held shined just as brightly as the sun they orbited around.
“Whoo! It’s a beautiful day!” The man beamed.
The rest of his team began to climb out. A girl who had sat in the truck avoided stepping into the large puddle they had parked right by. Not only the way she styled herself, but how she took in her surroundings let people know that she was a long way from home.
The trailer that pulled in just behind the truck, had a door slam open. There stood a short red-headed girl, holding several t-shirts in her hands, “Alright tornado lovers, who wants a t-shirt!” The crowd lit up with excitement.
Alongside her was a young blonde-haired girl, headphones hanging around her neck like jewelry. In her hands she held a box full of traveling mugs, “These cups will make every drink taste even better! You look thirsty, want one? I’m gonna need that money!”
Wilson stood back and observed it all, but his confusion only seemed to grow. He didn’t understand why these people were such a big deal.
Finley spoke up beside him once he saw the look his friend held, “Brando Saint, he likes to call himself a tornado herder.”
Wilson just blinked, “I don’t even know what that means.”
It was as if the crowd started to grow impossibly more. They seemed like a huge deal.
“We gotta get ahead of this junk,” Finley spoke before grabbing a tablet from Declan.
Turning back towards Wilson he offered it to him, “Alright, Wil. Which storm are we chasing?”
He observed the radar, taking in the clumps of reds, yellows, and greens that hovered right above them. However, none of them seemed to be getting anywhere.
“There’s a nice cell over in the East.” Declan pointed out to him.
Wilson gave him a side glance before walking ahead a bit. The man let his face drop, and instant irritation crept up in his demeanor.
Behind Wil, he could hear the soft patter of shoes against the rain-soaked pavement. Whipping his head around, he noticed how everyone else trailed close to him. He instantly froze, suddenly shy at the attention given.
“I-uh,” He leaned into Finley, just so he could hear him, “It’s been a while. I can just watch over this one right here.”
“No, hey, that’s okay take your time,” Finn muttered to him, trying to ease that nervousness, “You got this, that’s why you’re here.”
Wilson scratched at the side of his face, nerves still present as he glanced around. This didn’t go unnoticed by Finley, who just turned back to the rest of the group.
“Alright, make sure y’all have your bathroom breaks in before we go.” He said before they began to scatter out.
As the group walked to the entrance of the gas station, they were noticed by a certain other group.
“Prim and proper over here.” Cherry whistled out as she and the two others followed inside.
Reese barked out a laugh, “Nice crisp hats. Where you going to, church?”
Rose chimed in from the back, “Woah, don’t wanna hold the door open? Too heavy for you?”
On the other side of the lot lingered Brando Saint. The grin still etched onto his face as he signed the merchandise for his thrilled audience. He looked past it all once he locked eyes onto a curly-headed boy who trailed along the gravel.
Wilson huffed a sigh as he analyzed the different forms of the clouds in each direction. Unfortunately, none of them piqued his interest.
Declan walked up to Finley, staring at Wilson, “What’s he doing?”
Finn shrugged a shoulder, “Just doing his thing, man.”
The boy ahead picked up a random dandelion that grew from the patch of grass on the ground. His hand clasped around the pappus before pulling them off and watching them flow smoothly off and float into a certain direction in the wind.
“I used to do that too,” A new voice cut in from behind, causing Wil to become a little annoyed at the person interrupting his work, “Compare the wind direction to cloud movement. Get the feel for the shear.”
He then added, “Sometimes the old ways are better than the new ones.”
Wilson didn’t seem to pay him any mind, making Brando crack a smile, “Where you from anyway?”
“New York,” Wilson stated.
Bran still noticed the slight twang in his speech, “You’re a long way from home ain’t you, city boy?”
Wilson finally got a good look at him. His eyes were a breathtaking blue that resembled the shades of the deepest parts of the ocean, and a soft, yet intense look he carried on his face. Wilson couldn’t deny that the man was very handsome.
“Born and raised in Fort Worth, though.” He muttered, turning back around.
Brando raised his eyebrows intrigued. However, before he could say anything else, a voice with a very distinct British accent piped up behind him.
“Brando, do you know what storm we’re going after?” She questioned as she began pulling her goddess braids back into a scrunchie.
“Why don’t we ask…” He trailed off as he gestured to the boy beside him.
“Wilson.” He introduced himself.
“Wilson,” He echoed back, “I’m Brando.”
The girl beside them held out her hand, to which Wil took, “I’m Trixie, or well, everyone calls me Trix.”
They let go of the handshake before she spoke again, “I studied meteorology at University of Leeds. Then, of course, once I got my degree I got in contact with Brando over here and he’s giving me a proper first hand experience.”
Wil nodded his head, no other expression shown on his face, “Well, have fun with that.”
He began to walk away, but Brando’s voice decided to cut in, “Hold on, now,” Wilson stopped and turned back around, “You didn’t say which way we are going.”
The curly haired boy just pursed his lips and tilted his head as the other boy gestured off to the side, “From what I gather. West, we double our chances, and East.”
He moved to the gorgeous, yet still growing cumulonimbus, “Well, high risk high reward.”
Wil stared at him with a bored look, not affected by the so-called charm he held, “You can go ahead and take the reward. Wouldn’t want Trix here to think you’re boring now, would you?”
Bran smirked at him, “Boring isn’t usually a problem for me.”
However, the other boy was not convinced, “Two cells are fighting for the inflow over there, they’ll choke each other out eventually. Over in the East, though?”
He pointed just ahead, “She’s got the sky all to herself. Moisture, wind shear, instability.” He grinned. “All the good qualities you could ever dream of to give your friend here a nice show.”
He walked a few feet away from them before Brando yelled back, “City boy’s knows his stuff, Trix!”
“Thanks!” He whipped back around, “Maybe if I work real hard I could be a tornado herder too.”
Brando watched as he walked back to his own group, a small chuckle escaping his lips as he shook his head. He barely knew him, but he enjoyed this impression compared to everyone else.
Finley noticed Wilson coming back over to them, “Talk to us.”
Wil handed back the tablet, “We want the cells in the West.”
Declan furrowed his eyebrows, “But the one in the East has better numbers.”
“Conditions don’t feel right,” He started to explain, “Cap is too strong, it’ll never break.”
Finn hit the man to his side with the tablet, his irritation showing as he took it without any words.
“Alright, you heard him,” Finley called out to the other members. “Let’s move out!”
Wilson began his walk back to Finn’s truck, not before hearing Declan behind him muttering, “Guess we’re listening to dandelions.”
He didn’t want to let some inexperienced storm chaser get in his way of the prize ahead.
However, once he got back into the passenger side, it was all finally starting to catch up with him. First storm chase after three whole years of avoiding it. Nothing could possibly go wrong, could it?
Blue Side of the Mountain
Chapter 2
Wilson x Brando | Storm Chasers
A strong smell of coffee and cinnamon immediately flooded Wilson’s senses as he stepped a foot into his work. His ears filled with the soothing voice of Stevie Nicks as he swapped his thin jacket for the thick and scruffy texture of his brown apron.
“Just like the white-winged dove, sings a song, sounds like she’s singing. Ooh, baby, ooh.” His voice was barely above a whisper as he sang along. His head bobbed along as he tied the string behind his back.
Wilson’s routine always began with music, mostly of Stevie Nicks, ABBA, and Fleetwood Mac. It brought him a warm and safe feeling throughout his days in New York. Just like they did.
It had been three years since that incident. Everywhere he looked, he was overwhelmed with the sudden realization that they were no longer in his life.
There’s a flower shop he walks by daily, and on the outside were a variety of flowers one would just ignore. However, within the group of them stood white anemones. Riley’s favorite. When someone asked why she stuck up for such a plain flower, she would simply say, ‘Just like the eye of the storm, something so simple can hold such beauty’.
They were also the flowers that accompanied her grave.
It felt like forever since he last visited them all. He just couldn’t help but feel guilty for it all. The constant ‘what if’s’ floods his mind at every waking moment. What if we never went to that spot? What if they drove a little faster? What if it was all meant to happen?
They would have discovered countless things by now. Riley would’ve captured amazing shots that could’ve given her the opportunity to get her name out there, in addition to Jackie writing a book about his endless adventures and thrill of storm chasing.
Most importantly, Wilson would have been married to Colton.
That thought alone consumed him whole.
The box that was given to him that day sat perfectly untouched upon his bookshelf. It being the last physical thing he has of them all that he could hold.
His thoughts were interrupted when the bell at the entrance rang. In walked his mom, glasses pulled up on her head, and clothes slightly ruffled as she attempted to smooth the wrinkles out. Wilson huffed a laugh through his nose before closing a lid over the hot drink he just poured.
The woman spotted him immediately, a warm smile accompanied her face as she walked up to him. With a dramatic grunt, she set her bag onto the counter.
“Running late?” He asked, amused.
She gave him a pointed look, “My alarm went off too late, and then I realized I had no clean clothes, so I had to rush a load in the washer and dryer,” She sucked in a breath, “And then, I couldn’t find my purse.”
Wilson nodded his head as he listened to her rant while he cleaned his area. He quickly grabbed the sharpie they kept specifically for to-go cups, and scribbled down a sloppy heart.
“Well, luckily for you, I’m an amazing son and know what you order every morning.” He slid the cup to her gently, watching as she began to search through her bag. “Double lucky that I work here and it’s on the house.”
She stopped rummaging to look up at Wilson, a sigh of relief escaping her, “I’ll pay you back sweetie.”
Delilah grabbed the cup, but her eyes gazed upon the silver that hugged snug around the boy's finger. Her mood shifted slightly, barely enough to notice. Everyone around them knew what today was.
She hesitated before speaking up once again, “How are you, baby?”
The playful look Wilson had on his face immediately faded, replaced by a distant and deep pain. He blinked a couple times, shifting his eyes to his hands, “Aren’t you late for work?”
He always brushed this topic off, the feeling of it leaving a bitter aftertaste. Anyone with eyes could see how the boy carried a weight so heavy on his shoulders, that with one wrong shift everything could come crashing down.
“God forbid a mother cares.” Delilah sighed.
She watched as his form slumped over, the glassy look in his eyes sharpening by the moment. She also noticed how he occupied his hands, just to keep him doing something rather than talk about his feelings.
Delilah wanted to keep pushing to talk. Unfortunately, as she pulled out her phone she realized the time.
“Oh! Okay, I have to go,” She piled up her things before patting around her body, “Oh my god, where are my glasses?”
Wilson cracked a smile, pointing to his own head to signal to her. The woman mirrored him, feeling the object she had been looking for and groaned, rolling her eyes at herself as she placed them back onto her face.
She then grabbed ahold of the boy's arm before pulling him down and planting a big kiss on his cheek, “I love you, sunny. Call me if you need anything, alright?”
Wilson just nodded his head, “Okay. I love you too, mom.”
Once the woman finally walked out the door, Wilson let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding in. His shoulders slumped forward as a hand dragged down his face.
“She’s just worried, you know.” A voice cut in from behind.
The boy just turned around with a tired look in his eyes. His coworker stood there, barely glancing up as she worked on an online coffee order.
“I’m just,” He exhaled a shaky breath, “I’m so fucking tired of hearing the same exact thing of ‘how are you’ and ‘we’re here if you need anything’.”
His fingers clutched tight on the rag he held, “It’s such bullshit.”
Ashley stopped what she was doing, instead putting her full attention on the boy beside her, "Whether you like it or not, there’s people who love you and wanna make sure you’re doing okay,” She paused, “Even me, surprisingly.”
Wilson huffed a laugh before pulling his eyes away from her, the contact she held felt too heavy for him at the moment. Fortunately, the girl took his silence as a way of saying ‘just leave me alone’.
The bell at the door rang, signaling that someone had just walked in. It was a tall boy with ruffled blonde hair, carrying himself with a confidence that left people staring.
Ashley just nodded her head towards him, gesturing for Wilson to take care of it.
With a sigh, Wilson walked back up to the register, “Welcome to Cafe Gray, what can I get for you?”
“Just a medium caramel frap with a chocolate croissant, please.” He said as he dug out his wallet.
Wilson nodded his head while jotting down the order, “That’ll be nine seventeen.”
After he paid and was handed the receipt is when he finally took a good look at Wilson. His eyes squinted as he tried to piece together something. On the other hand, Wilson leaned back slightly, feeling very uncomfortable with the attention given.
“You look familiar,” He finally said, “Do I know you from somewhere?”
Wilson blinked in confusion as his eyebrows furrowed, “Not that I know of?”
“You’re not from New York, are you?” He questioned.
“Texas.” Wilson stated.
The other boy's eyes lit up with a sparkle, “Oh, no way me too! I’m here visiting family before I go back.”
Yeah, he seemed too bubbly to be from New York.
The curly haired boy just tilted his head as the other continued to ramble on, as if Wilson was just an old friend he bumped into.
“I do storm chasing in Fort Worth.” The world around Wilson started to blur, words muffling into nonsense like he had been submerged underwater.
Of course he would have to face something like this today of all the days of the year. Any expression that he held on his face softened into nothing, the ringing in his ears grew louder the more he stood there in front of this man.
His fingers twitched with a familiar tremor he tried so hard to take control of. The feeling of eyes burned in the back of his head, knowing it was Ashley holding a concerned look.
“Wilson?” He was snapped back to reality. The man in front of him glanced at him with caution, making him want to crawl out of his skin.
Instead he just shook his head, “Sorry, what’s your name?”
The blonde hesitated at first before speaking, “Reese.”
“Okay, Reese, you’re holding up the line.”
Reese stood there confused, his head spinning around to scan the room. The feeling only grew once he realized it was practically empty besides the three of them, “Uh, what line?”
Frustration bubbled deep within Wilson, “The metaphorical line, please sit while I get your order started.”
He turned without waiting for a response, he just needed to get out of that conversation as fast as he could.
It was like no matter how hard he tried to block it all out, it just came crashing back down harder than the waves crashed the shore. And oh, how badly he wanted the current to pull him away from this harsh reality.
Everyone around always stared at him as if they understood how he was feeling. Pitiful glances, a hand on the shoulder, watery eyes; Like they were the ones who had to go through it. Like they witnessed their best friends and fiancée be ripped out of his grasp like nothing.
Once the items were placed onto the counter, Wilson quickly muttered the boy's name.
Reese picked up his order with a soft, hesitant smile, “Have a good day, man.”
The bell rang above the door to signal his exit, letting a small weight lift off Wilson’s shoulders.
With a deep sigh, he let his head hang low as he rubbed his hands over his face. Good day? Yeah, like that was possible.
“Maybe, you should take a break.” Ashley spoke up as she leaned on the counter beside him.
Wilson shook his head, “I don’t need one, I’m fine.”
She just untied his apron without warning, “If you’re fine like you say you are, then maybe start acting like it.” The boy grumbled in protest, too stubborn for his own good to actually listen to what anyone has to say. “Now, shoo, before you scare more customers.”
Another person had entered just as she finished her sentence, however, the presence felt all too familiar to Wilson.
Once his head had turned to look, his worst fear had been answered.
There, standing in the middle of the cafe with a shy smile on his face, was none other than Finley Banks.
꩜
The breeze outside seemed to help cool Wilson off for a bit, wind drafting through the ringlets in his hair causing them to dance around his head. With an inhale, he let his shoulder drop back down, wanting to get this conversation over with.
Finley stood right beside him, his round glasses sat a little crooked on his nose. The glint of a small scratch on the glass shining bright in the New York sun.
“How did you find me?” Wilson got straight to the point.
Finn smirked, “Well, Ms. Hart is technically my best friend at this point.”
Wilson rolled his eyes with a soft chuckle, “Of course she is.”
A gentle silence fell over them, not quite comfortable. The question Wil wanted answered so badly itched to be asked.
“You’re not here for her, though,” He stated obviously, “Tell me exactly what brought you back, Finn.”
Finley looked down, avoiding the others eyes that seemed to pierce through him. It would be a difficult thing trying to convince Wil, out of all people, to go on this adventure with him.
He let out a sigh, “For the past three years, I’ve been with this disaster relief charity.” The air seemed to thicken at the sentence, a heavy weight falling between them. “They go around to the towns that have been affected by the storms, and they raise the money to help build up the communities again.”
Wilson turned his head straight forward, watching as the cars drove by. People going on with their days, some not carrying the burden of such a great loss; And it killed Wil that he couldn’t be the one in their position.
“What do I have to do with this?” He questioned, finally looking back at Finn.
The other boy just shrugged sheepishly, “You’re the only one I know who could navigate us safely through a tornado.” There it was.
Wilson scoffed, his lips pursing in a mix of emotions, “I quit long ago, Finley.”
“Okay, but please just listen to me.” He raised his hands defensively, wanting to explain himself properly to his friend. “We both know that deep down you miss chasing. It was the one thing in your life that you were so sure of, and you can’t just give something up you worked your ass off to accomplish.”
He turned his body, hands coming up to further emphasize his words, “Imagine what we could do, the lives we could save.”
Wilson pushed himself off of the wall, hands brushing against his clothes to smooth them out. His watery eyes glistened in the sun as he looked over his friend once more, “Yeah, well, I was so sure about a lot of things.”
A tear broke the barrier, sliding down his cheek in an almost humiliating way, “look how that ended.”
Then he walked back into the cafe, leaving Finley standing awkwardly out on the sidewalk.
He knew it would be difficult trying to convince Wilson to go back to the one place that ripped them apart, but he was so set on making it happen. No matter how long it would take.
Finn would spend countless years just trying to fix that bruised and battered patch between them.
꩜
It was the nights like this that got to Wilson. Frustrating insomnia, tossing and turning, the sudden realization of the way the fabric of his sheets felt grazing upon his skin. It took him ages just trying to fall asleep comfortably.
His mind seemed to never quiet. The thoughts in his head overpowering even the blistering sound of silence; Feeling of fire creeping up from his gut and into his throat, leaving an uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable sensation.
Fortunately, his mind appeared to slow. The tune of Slipping Through My Fingers echoed repeatedly like a broken record. It was a song he held close to him, a reminder of his mom every time he heard the well constructed lyrics.
It was almost peaceful.
That’s when he felt it. The phantom brush of a hand around his waist, a body pressed up against his back, the whisper of a breath and the words I’ve got you, keep holding on.
He was shocked out of the memory, his body shooting up with a sharp gasp. His heavy breathing and heart throbbed in his ears, much like the train that barreled across the tracks right by the house.
Wilson rubbed a hand over his face, exhaustion suddenly making its way through his body. He wanted so badly to have control over himself, but it felt impossible when everything in his life felt like it was going to shit. Any possible hope for him was just out of his reach.
A buzzing sound made his head turn to the side, his phone lit up with two notifications. Blinking a few times, his eyes adjusted to see the name that made his breathing hitch. Finley.
The first message he had sent was a news article: Another town in Northern Texas struck by an EF4.
Wil stared blankly at it before turning up his volume to listen to the voice message underneath it.
“Yet again, another one just appeared out of the blue. The storms haven’t been this catastrophic in a very long time, especially in the southern border of tornado alley. It’s been destroying our home and the people we care about, Wilson,” His voice was steady and determined, “We need to fight back, but I’m gonna need your help for it.” The message stopped.
Wil inhaled deeply through his nose, eyes closing as his head dropped low.
All of this was feeling like a sign to him. However, his next decision was either gonna be a mistake, or finally a necessary fresh start.
Somehow, it felt like both.

__________
Wilson Taran enjoyed the silence. He liked to listen to the way the wind rushed through the trees, the faint echo of metal clanging together from wind chimes in the distance, or even the way the rain fell upon the earth, carving its patterns within the soils.
Most of all, he loved the beauty of the southern storms.
He observed the scenery in front of him, the waving of the dark clouds was something he knew all too well. Moisture in the air sat hot and heavy, having Wilson breathe in as he raised up the camera to snap his line of sight.
As he walked back to the van, he couldn’t help but have a little skip, the adrenaline already starting to settle in.
Wilson entered into the back of the already open doors, allowing his body to drape over his boyfriend. Watching the man as his eyes attempted to open.
“Colton,” He whispered, causing the other to groan softly beneath him, “Cole wake up.”
“No.” Colton grumbled, his hands snaking their way around Wilson’s waist to pull him closer. “Just lay down with me.”
Wilson rolled his eyes, but still smiled nonetheless, “No, we have to go.”
This caused the other to finally open his eyes, “You find one for us?”
Wilson just nodded, the smile never faded from his face as he leaned down to press a quick kiss onto Colton’s lips.
Cole, however, just watched him fondly as he scrambled out of the vehicle to warn the others. His head shook as a soft chuckle escaped. He adored the way Wilson viewed the world. It was as if he personally held the earth in his hands with care, mapping out every detail he could manage.
Three loud honks shocked the others out of their sleep. Jackie Vaughn sat up, his hair tangled up and eyes squinted as they tried to adjust to the sudden light peaking in through the windows.
Riley Hayden brushed her hand beside her before they landed on her glasses. As she placed them on her face, she groaned as she stretched herself out, the effects of sleeping on the hard floor on a van showing as a dull pain spread through her spine.
“Storm’s here guys! We gotta get a move on!” Wilson exclaimed.
From the ground Finley Banks let out a loud noise of protest, “It’s way too early, and I'm still way too hungover.”
He pulled the blanket over his head before it was rudely snatched off by Wilson, “Come on, Finn! The day awaits!”
Finn just rubbed his eyes hard, “Buddy, my bed awaits actually.”
They are all up and wide awake now, moving around their camp site to separate what they did and didn’t need for their adventure. Finn, on the other hand, sat on a foldable chair inspecting one of the many pieces of their project Dorothy.
“Colton, babe, make sure the camera’s on I didn’t see the red light.” Wilson spoke as his restless figure stood in frame.
Cole flipped it around to see the red light blinking brightly back at him, “Wil, it’s on.”
“Now,” The older man said with a serious, yet joking tone, “Tell us the wonders of the world Doctor Taran.”
Wilson made a face at the sudden word, “Doctor, okay. Shut up, you’re gonna make me laugh.”
He shook his hands out and cleared his throat. Finally, after years of studies, their hard work is going to pay off.
“Our science team, Project Dorothy, is out on the field in Fort Worth, Texas.” The smile never left his face as he gestured out to the growing clouds beside them. “About to chase the storm just Southwest of us.”
His excitement never faltered, “This project is designed to understand what’s happening inside a tornado.”
“Tell them how you do that, Wilson.” Cole spoke out.
“We open up the lids here,” He tapped against the hard plastic, “And all of these sensors will go up into the funnel, measuring each part of the tornado simultaneously.”
“She’s gonna fly, baby!” Riley whooped.
Jackie jumped in from of the camera, hands on both sides to steady it on him, “We’re the riders of the storm, fuckers!”
As the cheering quieted, Finn took his chance to speak before the topic changed, “Okay, but it says the storm isn’t until the afternoon.”
Riley rolled her eyes while moving a bag out of their space, “Yeah, well, that data doesn’t see what Wil sees.”
“Can Wil see a couple more hours of sleep?” Finn begged before Riley pushed his shoulder playfully.
Jackie, on the other hand, basically slammed his laptop down onto the top of their project.
“Jackie!” Colton barked out, “Dorothy isn’t a personal desk for your shit!”
The boy just raised his hand in defense and took it off without another word.
Wilson, with the camera in hand, hustled everyone together into frame, “Say, riders of the storm!”
“Riders of the storm!”
꩜
Wilson felt the cool air rush in through the cracked window, but his eyes were stuck on the horizon in front of him. The clouds continued to grow darker and the waving only sharpened. He couldn’t help but to let his legs bounce up and down with restlessness.
“Wilson was right,” Jackie echoed from the back, “Winds are increasing in the southeast.”
“See, what did I tell you?” He smiled wide, hands clenched together to ease the nerves.
Without looking, Colton took one of his hands off the wheel and grabbed onto one of Wilson’s. The boy instantly intertwined their fingers together before Cole lifted them up to press a kiss to the back.
The older man ducked his head to get a more clear view, “Oh man, it’s really building up.”
The soft sound of The Chain by Fleetwood Mac filled the car. In the back, Wilson could hear as Riley sang along. The airy sound of her voice easing something deep within them all.
A sudden ring cut sharp into the air, causing Wilson to jump lightly before he pulled out his phone.
“Hi, mom.” He answered brightly.
“Sunny, baby,” He could practically feel her warm smile, even from hundreds of miles away, “What are you up to?”
“Oh, you know, just chasing a storm,” Lightning lit up the sky in response, “So, the usual.”
A dramatic sigh cut in through the speaker, “It’s times like this that I wish you stuck with Astrology.”
Wilson huffed a laugh, “You know I’m a sucker for the adrenaline rush.”
“Of course, of course,” She let out a snort, “I just want you guys to be careful now, you hear?”
Wilson just rolled his eyes playfully, “Yes, We’ll be safe.”
He switched it to the speaker and looked around at everyone, “Y’all tell her we’re safe, we’ve done this a thousand times.”
“Hi, miss Hart!”
“We’re okay, miss Hart!”
“We love you, miss Hart!”
She chuckled in amusement, “I love you kiddos. Come back in one piece!”
“Love you, mom.” He hung up before looking back out to the sky. The clouds were starting to shift in a more circular pattern, preparing for the storm to come.
Wilson sighed in admiration, “Man, I love Texas.”
“Said no one ever, by the way.” Riley called out in the middle of her counting using the Mississippi method.
Jackie turned his head to glance at her quickly, “You know that doesn’t work, right?”
“Yes, it does. You’re just not on my level of smartness.”
“Smartness, you mean dumb scale?”
Colton chuckled at their bickering, but soon tuned it out once Finn was heard coming in through the walkie, “Alright, how are we getting to this thing? I’ll need a Southwest position to read my sensors.”
“Yeah, I’m on it.” Cole responded back. He quickly placed the walkie back in its spot before making a sharp right turn.
Finn, in the vehicle behind them, followed in suit. The lightning ahead of them began to flash brighter and stay more consistent, causing their line of sight to be locked in place on the bursts of white light.
“Oh boy,” Jackie said with an excited huff of laughter, “the winds here are really starting to pick up.”
Riley glanced over his shoulder at the data on his computer screen, “Got some serious energy building up!”
She leaned back and rolled her window all the way down, her seatbelt coming unbuckled while doing so. As she pulled out her phone to start recording the view of the winds blowing the trees sideways, she let out a delighted shout. Her energy sparks a chain reaction as they all let out a shout as well, a sound that they could compare to a pack of wolves.
“No wait, why are you leaning out the window?” Jackie asked in a panicked tone, “Hold on Ri-buckle up! No, you’re not funny, actually.”
The girl groaned before returning back to properly sit in her seat, “You’re no fun, Jackie, you know that? This is exactly why you almost got struck by lightning.”
“And I’m playing it safe, maybe you should learn a thing or two.” The girl just stuck her tongue out at him.
Wilson turned towards Colton, “We should get Dorothy up and ready.”
“Shouldn’t we wait for the rain first?” He asked.
Except his question was already answered once the sound of the rain came pouring down. Wilson just grinned at Colton smugly, who in return shook his head at his boyfriend's confidence.
“We should get Dorothy up and ready.” Cole echoed back the reply.
“Wow, I hadn’t thought of that.”
They pulled off to the side of the road to a spot that didn’t have as much rain, their forms moving swiftly around each other as they got to work to set up the sensors. Riley stood behind the truck, repeatedly pressing the button as if that could open up the lid that refused to budge open.
Finley came up to her with his hands up to get her to step back. With a few harsh hits to the side he muttered, “Okay, now try that.”
She tried it once more, but once it didn’t cooperate again she threw her arms up in frustration towards the other boy.
Finn just shrugged, “That usually works.”
Riley groaned, “Why does this thing have to be so old.”
“Well, this has been field tested several times. Plus, this is Wilson’s science project.” Finn replied as he pointed to him, but he didn’t pay any mind to it.
“Actually,” Jackie gestured around to them all, “It’s our project.”
Wilson came around the vehicle, “Okay, well, if it doesn’t work this time that’s fine. This may be the last chase of the season, but we still got plenty of them ahead of us.”
Colton agreed, “Yeah, we’ll have enough time to truly perfect it, only if this once doesn't work in our favor.”
Before Wilson could move any further, Cole pulled him back by the waist. A small giggle escaped his lips as he turned towards his boyfriend properly.
“What’s got you all clingy?” He asked as they locked eyes.
The taller man shrugged as if he didn’t know what he was talking about, “I may have something for you.”
A small rectangular box was suddenly in his view, the wood having tiny details of random doodles; mainly flowers of variety colors, which he knew were Riley’s doing.
“Everyone helped design it, but I made the box.” He smiled as he placed it in the other boy's hand. “I wanted to make you something special.”
Wilson moved the object around in his hand, his smile only widening the more he took it in. His fingers itched towards the small latch that closed it shut, only to be stopped as Colton cupped his hands around his.
“Hold on, now,” He chuckled warmly, “I want you to open this after we make history.”
“Wow, okay, didn’t know you were such a romantic.” He wrapped his arms around Cole’s neck. “I love it though, thank you.”
Their lips met for a slow kiss, Wilson’s fingers curling to drag his nails down the other’s head just as Colton’s brushed against his lower back. Once they pulled back, Wilson immediately went to tuck the box into his side pocket to keep it safe.
Riley on the other hand let out a small woop in victory once she got Dorothy to respond, “Alrighty! Got her, finally!”
Picking up one of the sensors, Wilson held it out towards Finn, “It’s our time to shine Finney boy.”
The other took it with a grin on his face, “Okay, be careful dumbasses, I love all of you.”
He and Wilson clapped their right hands together, thumbs interlinking before sliding to join their pinkies together. They brought their hands down as if promising a secret until their index fingers made a swirling motion to indicate a tornado.
꩜
The rain poured down hard, the thick droplets making it sound as if thousands of pebbles crashed into them. The condensation causes the windows to fog. Wilson wipes at the glass with his hand to try and get a better look as they drive further into the storm.
“Okay, so,” Jackie cleared his throat, “We got a CAPE of four-thousand, a hundred knots gate-to-gate wind shear aloft.”
“Come on,” Wilson groaned, “Just give us a nice and respectable EF1. Hell, we’ll even take an EF2 at this point.”
“If any of them is a possibility.” The boy in the back muttered.
Wilson turned his head towards him dramatically, “Do you have no faith in me, Jackie?”
Riley huffed a laugh, “Just as long as we don’t get another one of those baby EF0’s.”
She then pulled out her walkie, “Finn, how is Dorothy’s GPS?”
On the other side, safe away from the storm, Finley checked the radar, “Dorothy’s coming in loud and clear, baby.”
They felt as the wind rushed past the car, debris starting to fly by. Colton swiftly dodged a large branch before steadying back on the road.
“Are we in the tornado?” Jackie said in a joking manner.
However, no one laughed back. Wilson studied how the wind was starting to get quiet the more they traveled down the road.
Panic seized in his chest as he glanced out the back window, “No, it’s behind us.”
“Okay wait,” Cole cut in, “Should I drive faster?”
“No, no, we gotta drop Dorothy in its path.” Wilson responded.
“Are we gonna see the path?” Jackie asked.
Just before Wilson could give a proper answer, a large hay barrel crashed into the windshield. The force of it caused Colton to be thrown off guard, his hands flying around the wheel to try and steady them, but ultimately failing as they went off into the grass.
They all groaned from the impact, but they knew they needed to move quickly. The two up front glanced back outside, except nothing was visible.
Wilson looked out beside him, seeing as the rain crashed down sideways, “This is the path.”
Bright lights flashed aggressively, breaking the silence that sat heavy with them. Jackie let out a startled breath, “That’s a lot of lightning.”
“Okay, you guys stay here,” Wilson unbuckled his seat belt and pushed open his door, “I’ll get it back up.”
“Hey, wait!” Colton called out after him, “Come on, let’s go help him!”
They all could feel their clothes immediately start to stick to their skin as the rain soaked through. The wind was so heavy it felt as if you could barely breathe.
“We need to hurry!” Wilson yelled out to them as he attempted to push it up, but no matter the amount of strength he put into it, it just wouldn’t budge.
“Hold on, we need leverage!” Colton yelled while backing off. He glanced around the area frantically, eyes landing on a long piece of metal that lay scattered on the ground. He picked it up before returning back to the others.
Jamming the bar beneath the trailer, he forced it upward. The pressure of him and the others quickly propelled it upright with a large crash.
They all cheered and high-fived, but their bodies moved as they tried to get the sensors in the path.
Riley pressed against the button harshly, “Come on, come on.”
The latch flew open making her let out a loud woop in response. Jackie on the other hand worked on getting the trailer detached from the vehicle, sighing in relief once it wanted to cooperate.
“We’re clear!” He exclaimed.
“Alright, let’s go, let’s go!” Wilson said as he and Jackie jumped back into the car.
Meanwhile, Riley and Colton stayed back to get a closer look at the storm. They noticed how it only seemed to be getting stronger by the second.
They sucked in a nervous breath and glanced at each other, knowing that it can’t be good. Nonetheless they followed everyone back.
“Okay, we dropped the trailer, Finn.” Wilson spoke into the walkie.
Colton sped off back into the road, Dorothy staying in its spot, but soon enough disappearing from their distance.
All except Cole watched behind them, attempting to spot something. Anything.
“What if there’s no tornado?” Riley spoke up, “What if it’s just a dense wave of hail?”
Finn, on the other side, noticed as the sensors activated. They flew up a respectable height. His eyes widened, “Yeah, baby! We just shot up ten-thousand feet!”
In the car, the other let out an excited laugh, it finally felt as if everything was coming out just as planned.
“Okay, that’s definitely not a hail wave.” Riley's shoulders shook in a chuckle, but also nervousness.
Colton turned towards his boyfriend, “We did it, Wil!”
His eyes wandered to the side mirror, watching as one of the poles crackled with electricity before being pulled up off the ground. He felt his heart rate begin to race, the smile wiped clean off his face, “Wait, it’s starting to get closer.”
Wilson stiffened in his seat, his gaze shifting towards the front as he watched the windshield wipers stuttered.
Finn's voice broke through, “Sensors rising, thirty-thousand feet.”
“Wait, wait, wait, no,” Wilson said with a huff, “That doesn’t make sense.”
Riley raised her walkie, “Are the winds weakening, Finn?”
“Dorothy can’t tell you that,” He answered back, “Lagrangian mechanics. A moving sensor can’t give you the exact measurements of wind speed, but-“
His head snapped to his laptop once it beeped loudly. Taking in the new data, he cut back in, “Oh, yeah! forty-thousand feet, your tornado ain’t shrinking Wil.”
Wil suddenly felt frozen in his spot, it was never supposed to get this big.
“Fifty-thousand feet.” No one in the car responded.
Finley only watched the numbers grow, his eyes widening and his enthusiasm dimmed fast, “Holy shit.”
“No, no, no, this can’t be right.” He jerked his body up to turn back into the van.
“Finn, talk to us.” Riley didn’t get an immediate response. The line on the other end stayed silent as Finn moved to look at his other monitor. “Talk to us.”
“Sensors just shot up,” His voice cracked, “Seventy-thousand feet.”
Everyone felt their hearts drop, a sharp chill ran down their spines as their breathing hitched at the weight of the situation.
“Uh, the-the NEXRAD velocity is two-hundred miles per hour.” Jackie attempted to keep his voice stable, but it was clear how terrified he was.
Colton replied quickly, “That’s impossible.”
Wilson, on the other hand, just locked his gaze on the dark grey atmosphere that stretched out behind them, “Unless, it’s an EF5.”
Finley darted to the window, his breath huffing out as he finally took in the size, “Guys, whatever it is, it’s big and it’s moving fast. You have to get the hell out of there!”
The car started to swerve greatly, strong wind and rain defying the movement of the vehicle. Colton attempted to gain control as everyone yelled in unison, “Go, go, go!”
“How did it become an EF5?” He spoke to no one in particular.
“Fuck, it’s getting closer!”
Cole slammed his foot down on the gas, seventy miles per hour. Breath caught in his throat as he prepared for the worst, one-hundred miles per hour. Yet it felt impossible to escape the reality of just how big the storm truly was.
“Look out!” Wilson shrieked in fear.
A large slab of metal crashed in the front of them, Colton swerving too late as the tires slipped against the rain and gravel, their vision spinning along with the car. With a sudden jolt, they crashed hard into a ditch.
Fast and terrified breathing echoed around them. Cole did a quick scan of his friends and boyfriend, “Everyone Okay?”
They just panted in response, adrenaline spiked to the max.
“We can’t stay here.” Colton said.
“There!” Jackie pointed ahead to the bridge just in their line of sight.
Wilson shook his head, “Overpasses are the worst in tornadoes!”
“What do we do?”
It was as if his mind went blurry, he focused on too much at once. This caused the words he wanted to say to get stuck in his mouth, he glanced nervously at Colton.
Cole, however, understood what he thought, “This car’s gonna fly! Come on!”
Their doors slammed open as they all rushed out together, rain smacking hard onto their skin, sure to leave red marks.
“Colton, Wilson, Riley, Jackie! You gotta get out of there!” Finn’s voice was overpowered by the storm.
They ran straight towards the overpass, not bothering to look back as they knew that the car was starting to levitate off the ground. Except for Colton, who risked a glance behind, seeing as the car no longer stood on the field.
Jackie, who was the furthest back, began to lose his balance. The wind pushed too hard, which caused him to fall forward. Nature adapted and sent his body up, struggling a scream from his throat as he barreled into the swirling mass of the funnel.
No one else noticed as they focused on saving their own lives. Hearts thumping loud in their ears and lungs stinging as their legs pushed them fast.
As they reached the steep slope, Colton and Wilson immediately began to climb. The rain and grass growing from the cracks of the concrete made it slippery.
“Come on!” Cole shouted to them.
Their forms struggled to ascend due to the traction on their shoes not being able to grip properly. Once Colton made it to the top, he sat himself down and turned back to offer a hand out if needed.
With Wilson a few feet behind him, he extended his hand before suddenly faltering when a sharp piece of metal pierced the side of his leg. He let out a scream of pain as blood spilled out from between his fingers that clamped hard around the wound.
Cole slid down to get within arms reach of his boyfriend, “Come on Wil!”
However, Wilson just looked back for the others, noticing the lack of them, “Wait! Where’s Jackie?”
Cole felt his stomach drop at those words. The tornado only continued to grow closer every second, tears welling in his eyes as he understood what happened with Jackie.
“Wil!” Riley desperately called out as her form continued to slide down after the progress she made, “Wilson!”
The boy steadied himself as he reached his hand down towards her, “Riley! Come on!”
“No, Wilson!” Colton yelled out. With how powerful the wind was, only one wrong move could cause something worse.
Riley finally was able to plant her feet on the concrete, an arm outstretched as she tried to not lose her balance again. Just before the tips of their fingers could touch, a large mass of branches slammed into the side of her.
She flew sideways, hurling straight into the tornado.
“Riley!” Wilson cried out. His body unconsciously moved downwards before he felt hands grip onto him, “Riley!”
“Come on!” He heard the yell in his ear.
Colton dragged them up to the top, Wilson letting out choked sobs while doing so. He was laid on his stomach to have better cover.
“Hold onto the rail!” Cole demanded. He covered his body over Wilson’s, offering an extra shield of protection.
They hyperventilated as the tornado swirled closer and grew louder, the howling of the wind making things impossible to hear. However, Wil could hear his boyfriend loud and clear, creating a calm within the storm.
“Wrap your arms around the rail! You’re gonna be okay!” His voice was steady and sure.
Wilson whimpered in fear as his hands turned white from how hard he held on. They were going to survive this.
Colton pressed his lips into the side of Wil’s ear, “You’re gonna be okay, I’ve got you! Keep holding on!”
Wind whistled throughout the overpass, causing even Cole’s voice to be drowned out.
“I’ve got you, Wil!” He assured his boyfriend, “I’ve got you!”
Air flew between them, causing their bodies to separate before Colton was suddenly soaring straight back into the mass.
“NO!” Wilson wailed out. A guttural screaming howling deep from out of his throat as he had to sit there and watch the naturally created monster take those he loved the most in the blink of an eye.
His shattering screams were drowned out by the roaring wind cutting through every crevice of every object. He felt the air wrap around his body to attempt to pull him back, but it only made his grip impossibly tighter.
He screwed his eyes shut as the little light he had left slowly dim, and the tornado began to pass over him.
꩜
Wilson didn’t know exactly when it happened, but the next thing he was aware of was his body slowly limping down the road. He could feel the thin layer of mud that stuck to his skin. The blood that streamed down his leg eventually dried up.
His gaze looked out into nothing, mind wandering off into another plane of existence. The boy paid no mind to the searing pain in his leg, nor the debris that littered his path.
He was alone.
The thought of it hadn’t quite hit him, yet. Just an hour ago, he was laughing and celebrating with his best friends over accomplishing something they have worked so hard on. Now, where once stood four, one walked out.
A soft humming of a vehicle was heard, the wheels crunching against the scattered bits. Wilson finally focused his gaze, only to be met with the heartbreaking expression of Finley.
Behind him, a cop car pulled up. Bright lights flashing, making Wilson flinch as it stung his eyes.
He continued to walk towards Finn, who met him halfway to wrap his arms around him in a comforting, yet careful hug. A small grunt escaping Wil’s lips as a dull ache spread through his muscles.
Once they pulled away, Wilson could bare himself to look at his friend. Instead they drew a line to his left pocket, the object causing a bump in the denim fabric.
He pulled it out gently to reveal the box given by Colton earlier that day. His fingers hesitating at the latch once again before he slid it open.
Inside was a ring, silver carved into spirals all the way around, indicating the wind. Tucked into the back of it were two individual scrolls. On one side it read ‘To conquering storms forever’. However, once he took in the next one, he couldn’t help but bite his lip as a hot tear fell down his cheek.
‘Will you marry me?’
He took the ring out of the slot it comfortably sat. The silver was polished beautifully, but some edges were jagged; he understood it too well, though. He knew Colton’s design flaws like the back of his hand, but he always told him it added character.
With a small clump, he shut the box back to stick it safely back into his pocket.
And with the ring, he slid it gently onto his left ring finger.
Wilson used to enjoy the silence. Now, it just howled back at him as if it was one big joke.
