You ever have trouble coming up with place names for your fantasy story or setting?
So I had an idea about this based on how certain towns in Ireland, where I live, are named. For example: the town of Maynooth, which is not too far from my hometown. The name Maynooth comes from the Irish “Maigh Nuad”, which means “the plain of Nuadha” who was a king of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Maigh Nuad became Maaynooth through the typical butchering that happens when you translate into the English language. So do that!
For example, I have ideas for a D&D campaign and the starting village is one I’ve been calling Redriver, because they export red wood and it’s on a river. It’s a very basic descriptor name for a place and it’s not very creative. So I put it through google translate for the language that fits the setting, in my case Irish.
Red river becomes abhainn rua (pronounced ow-ann ru-ah). And now, let the butchering begin. Irish is great for this. I swap the words around and combine the a’s to make Ruabhainn. Since it doesn’t sound right using abhainn’s proper pronunciation I change it, taking inspiration from the fact in Irish bh sometimes makes a v sound. So the village name becomes Ruavainn (ru-av-ann). Which, I think you’ll agree, sounds a lot cooler.
With this system all I have to do is come up with a basic descriptor name then translate it and butcher it. So I have stuff like the Fudowen mountains or the Uid Ragan bog. And best of all the names don’t give plot points away that their unaltered names would.
The veil is thin here. It’s thin everywhere. Of course it’s fucking thin. Who ever heard of a thick veil? That shit’s lightweight, even sheer.
Like, shit, Agatha. There’s a reason they don’t call it “the down comforter between worlds”.
I CHOKED
ultimately the only character that truly needed to chill, was the Squip

On everyone’s 18th birthday they receive a letter from their future selves. Some receive long messages about their future lovers or messages about changes they would have made. Yours contains nothing but a small list of locations and the words, “NEVER VISIT”.
“You’d think I would know myself better than this,” you say, typing the first set of coordinates into your GPS.

My bro jeremy out here chillin’
this is SO bad but i thought id post it since jeremy and michael make me melt
hugging the squip squad
jeremy: kinda awkward, he wants you to feel better but he doesn’t quite know what to do with his arms and ends up just sorta patting your back
michael: very warm and firm, he squeezes you tight and shuts his eyes while burying his head in your neck because he cares so much and he just wants you to be ok
christine: so tender and passionate, she smells like vanilla and strokes your hair, but she also does that jumping-up-and-down-while-hugging thing what makes you smile no matter what because she’s just so happy to see you
rich: squeezes you a little too tight but you feel safe. wouldn’t give you a proper hug unless he knows you pretty well. squeezes you like he’s trying to physically squeeze out whatever is making you feel bad
jake: surprisingly gentle, he’s v tall so he just sorta wraps his arms around you and rests his head on yours. stays like that for as long as you need and listens to you if you need to cry or just stay silent
chloe: reluctant hugger, but when she hugs you, you can tell she cares. she hugs you quickly and you can smell her perfume, but when she pulls away she squeezes your hand for a second too, to let you know that she’s there for you
brooke: she softest hugger, her body just sort of melts into yours like a weighted blanket. she puts her arms around your neck and makes sure you know that she is there for you no matter what
jenna: hugs you before you can even ask. wraps her arms around you and rubs your back, and you get the sense that she understands exactly how you’re feeling, even if you’ve never told her
