Respectfully, community labels do nothing but hide posts and deter people from clicking on a fanfic they could potentially read, even adults

We have these things called tags, where you can put minors dni, smut, nsfw etc and you can just block that tag

I see why you would want to use community labels, but i see more reason not to use them, and i think you are fighting too hard on this topic

Tumblr has gone forever eithout them, its fine, everyone is fine, minors are gonna read smut whether there are labels or not you cant prevent that other than the block button, which a lot of us use

Respectfully, I don't need anyone explaining the concept of tags or the block button to me.

Yes the whole point is that Community Labels hide mature content from those who either set their age as 17 or younger when making a Tumblr account or adults who wish to better curate their Tumblr experience. I don't know why people are so convinced that this is a useless concept. It's a good thing to limit the amount of age inappropriate content that minors are exposed to and just because this can never be fully limited does not mean the efforts are useless. And it's a good thing to be respectful of those who wish to hide certain content without them having to keep up with every tag variation.

But you know one function of Community Labels that tags simply cannot provide? The ability to blur mature content without hiding it completely. This makes Tumblr safer to browse in public which is useful for mobile users. It also makes it easier for people to only engage with potentially triggering media when they're fully prepared and aware of what they might be opening up.

So there are actually benefits to using Community Labels outside of hiding your content from a preselected group of users.

I go hard on advocating for Community Labels but you'll notice my vitriol is aimed towards people who are hypocritical or those who send in equally contentious asks. If people don't like seeing my posts about using Community Labels then they can block me.

Community Labels make Tumblr a better safer space for everyone. So stop making excuses to avoid using them.

Start Encouraging Blogs to Use Community Labels

Calling all smut readers! Start encouraging the blogs you read to use Community Labels on their adult content.

If their post is missing a Community Label... point it out to them in the comments. If they write "Minors DNI" on the post... point out how using Community Labels actually stops minors from seeing or interacting with their posts. Point out how using Community Labels is also helpful for adults who want to avoid certain content or who want certain content to be blurred so they can safely scroll Tumblr in public settings.

you truly have worms for brains. let MINORS be MINORS on the internet instead of making them feel like they have to lie about their age to view anything. and what happens when they start getting approached by some very weird adults online much like i was when i was 13-16 lying about how old i really was? one of us gaf about minors and it’s not you. you just want to shame them from viewing something that perfectly normal for them at that age.

How about you grow the fuck up and recognize that literally I'm not forcing minors to lie about their age online. Minors have done that shit for as long as the internet has existed and the Community Labels are not going to cause an increase in the phenomenon.

Another dogshit argument against using Community Labels. Because I've already argued that minors will most likely feel less inclined to lie about their age when they're not seeing constant reminders that they're too young to view certain content and then be expected to have the self control to stay away from it. Community Labels removes the issue entirely by hiding the labeled content all together from minors on Tumblr.

No one ever said it wasn't perfectly normal that minors want to seek out age inappropriate content - how about you try addressing my arguments for once instead of going off on immature tirades that make it sound like you're currently a minor trying to pass themselves off as an adult?

Just because minors want to see a certain type of content does not mean that content is good for them. And just because minors are often exposed to age inappropriate content does not mean that exposure should be allowed to continue. It's not good that minors can access the entirety of Tumblr content unfiltered. And the fact that you can't understand that truly shows your own bias towards "I did it as a kid and I'm fine! Stop shaming me for things I did as a kid!" Just because you turned out alright doesn't mean other people will. I cannot count the number of people I've met online and in real life who feel literally traumatized by age inappropriate content they were exposed to online. It is concerning. And the only people I'm shaming are the ones who pretend to give a fuck about keeping minors away from their content but then refuse to use the fucking Community Labels.

The reason why I'm advocating for Community Labels is because I want minors to just be minors online! Minors should be allowed a space within the Tumblr community that is safe and age appropriate where they can be themselves.

But that space must necessarily be separate from more adult spaces that contain mature content. This is true both because that type of content can be harmful to minors and also because not having such restrictions would result in either Tumblr getting shut down (like when it was removed from app stores for "promoting pedophilia") or in Tumblr having to ban mature content (like the infamous content purge followed by more strict rules around NSFW in order for Tumblr to be reinstated on app stores).

The introduction of Community Labels is the only fucking reason Tumblr is starting to allow more mature content again. And there's a chance that the rules will continue to relax if users start adopting the Community Labels on their posts. I would love to see Tumblr return to it's old NSFW policy of "go nuts, show nuts, whatever" and if that means using Community Labels when going nuts then so be it!

I also never equated this issue to sin of any kind and it's ridiculous to suggest that being concerned about minors accessing age inappropriate content means it's impossible to also care about more prominent problems. The majority of humans have the mental capacity to worry about more than one thing at a time.

All that being said... this is again a shit argument against using Community Labels! Just because minors willingly search out age inappropriate content does not mean it's good for minors to access that content! And it's not just minors who are 14 and up like you suggest here. Tumblr's minimum user age is set to 13 years old and we've already acknowledged that minors will lie about their age to access certain content. Which means there's a good chance that there's minors 12 years old and under lurking around the site.

And let's not forget that Community Labels are used by adults too! There's an influx of new users who are coming from Twitter who are not used to how Tumblr tags works. Some of them don't always use the correct tags for mature material. Some of them censor the words they're tagging so that material still shows in the feeds of people who absolutely do not want to see that shit. And some of them are dead fucking set on not changing this behavior. So a reasonable compromise is to get these new users in the habit of using Community Labels on mature material so it gets automatically hidden from those who don't want to see that type of content no matter what tags the original poster used.

But now let's drop the sarcasm and engage with your argument directly (unlike how you refused to engage with any actual points I made).

Is it possible that some minors might lie about their age when making a Tumblr account in order to bypass the Community Label censoring? Yes. Is it just as possible that some minors already lie about their age in their Tumblr header in order to not get blocked by "Minors DNI" blogs? Also yes!

So in each case we have the possibility that minors will lie about their age. Which means this is a worthless argument for not using Community Labels.

Let's instead consider which method is more effective in stopping minors from accessing age inappropriate material.

A blog that only writes "Minors DNI" without ever using Community Labels has no control over whether or not a minor might click on the content. The post is completely visible to every Tumblr user including minors. "Minors DNI" does not ward off minors from the post and instead acts as a neon sign to draw their attention to something cool and adult and forbidden. You cannot wave forbidden content directly in a minor's face and expect them not to click on it simply because you explicitly told them not to. That's just not how humans work.

But a blog that tags their mature content with Community Labels will now have those post automatically hidden to anyone who set their age to under 18 when making a Tumblr account. AND the age associated with your account cannot be changed unlike how you can easily edit the displayed age in your Tumblr header. Now minors don't even realize there's forbidden content that they're missing out on. It's a far more effective method to keep minors from interacting with age inappropriate content.

Of course there's no guarantee that minors won't try to make a second account where they lie about their age to bypass all of this. But you know what? At least then creators can rest assured that they did everything they possibly could to stop minors from interacting with their mature content. At least then the blame would rest squarely on the shoulders of the minor who is lying rather than being partially shouldered by a creator who refused to use the content moderation tools that Tumblr has so conveniently provided.

So again! If you write "Minors DNI" on your mature posts and then refuse to use the Community Labels to actually help limit the number of minors who are exposed to age inappropriate material... I'm just gonna assume you don't actually give a shit about the well-being of those minors. Cause you're only taking steps to selfishly protect your own image rather than doing something that's actually beneficial for minors.

"Minors DNI" does fuck all to stop minors from actually interacting with your post. The Community Labels actually hide your posts from anyone who is not confirmed 18+ on their blog.

If you write "Minors DNI" on your post but then DON'T use the Community Labels I assume you don't give a shit about whether or not minors interact with your post.
