As I evaluate, I think that this is relevant to modern day society especially because as a Nation there are still issues such as colonisation and racism that separates communities causing a division between Māori and Pākehā especially. I think that because Māori are actively using practices like Te Reo me ōna Tikanga to create encouragement and celebrate New Zealand culture, the impacts of colonisation has glorified this as an act of division when really it is a powerful act of unity in regards to the unique diversity of Aotearoa’s National Identity.

Mainstream media vs Māori media

As quoted from one of the interviewers,

"Indigenous films and images of other indigenous peoples are more "real" or relevant to her than perhaps sitcoms and dramas such as Friends or Sex in the City which target white, middle-class viewers. This is because on Maori Television, iwi Maori are shown more realistically as are other indigenous peoples"

Author Jo Smith explores the perspective’s of greater non-Māori interests examining a Māori broadcaster's ability to adhere to both tikanga and the Broadcasting standards authority.

Founded in 2004, Māori Television has significantly changed the landscape of New Zealand's broadcasting. However, over the past year or so, Māori Television's politics have come to the attention of the general public.

This in-depth overview of Māori Television offers five frameworks to address the challenges of working within a wider non-Māori context. This overview incorporates Marsden Grant and three years of interviews with main stakeholders, including staff, the Māori Television board, politicians, investors, and viewers.

Dr Jo Smith descends from the iwi of Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mamoe, and Waitaha. Majority of her experience stems from her role as senior lecturer at the school of English, Film, Theatre, Media, Art History and Communications at Victoria University. Dr Smith is also a key contributor to the sharing of knowledge around Māori media providing courses about Māori and the relationship with media through written sources such as "The first 10 years" and her recent 2020 composition "Routledge handbook of critical indigenous studies", so it is appropriate to reference her to support the development of my research.

So for my Media research class I am to explore the influence of cultural practices in media production. My media production I have chosen is only the best indigenous media production company ever! Known for years as Māori Television however quite recently officially acknowledged as Whakaata Māori. Through my research I will formulate ethical non-bias questions to in the end seek useful knowledge!
