of ALL the things the other could say, this was one of the FEW responses which would make the gambler back down at least a little. words of a father dragging her here, sound so familiar. and even if this stranger isn’t being FORCED into the world of gambling kicking and screaming, it is something that will always resonate with her. a hatred of fathers, one that burns deep in her veins – something that exists deep within her heart. a bitterness that ended in BRIGHT flames, the smell of smoke, and a PHOENIX rising from the ashes of destruction.
but for however self-reflective her thoughts may be – that is likely not the case here. a lame meeting in a gambling den? that could mean MANY things. he could be gambling away their life savings – perhaps even his LIFE. or he could be shaking hands with scum, marking someone for DEATH, buying drugs. all kinds of SEEDY things. no doubt in her mind it is nothing NOBLE.
“ your father left you here alone? how SELFISH. the imbeciles here are certainly not the SAFEST – someone like you, they might just EAT you up. how lucky for YOU that it was ME who noticed you. “
is she trying to intimidate her? yes. her gaze never shifts, posture still so perfect as she looks at the stranger. a little impressed with the way she hasn’t FLINCHED, but that could also be sheer idiocy. most idiots don’t understand dangerous situations. something tells her that isn’t the case here. and quite frankly it is somewhat MORE interesting than the scum surrounding her, or another simple match.
and so she finds herself doing something she does not OFTEN do. another smile, never reaching her eyes – still cold, predatory. playing a game. everything is ALWAYS a game. a hand lifts, twirling in raven locks that frame her face.
“ join me for a DRINK. i have a PRIVATE table. certainly safer than merely leaning here. “
SHE KNEW IT WAS TRUE . wasn’t as if she was ignorant to just how dangerous even walking in the door felt . she wanted to deny that it was selfishness which drove her father to drag her here , but she couldn’t think of any other excuse . because really , what father would even bring his daughter to a place like this ? a place where even a grown man would likely feel uneasy . where illegality seemed to be the norm . ( let alone the fact that he knew she still needed to go to school in the morning . that keeping her out late would only leave her with even less time to sleep . )
but still , even when she was already aware of all the things celestia described , she found her heart beginning to beat faster , lips pressed together firmly as she gazed right back into those unyielding red eyes . she knew her options were limited . also knew that anyone capable of intimidating the goons that filled the room was not someone to be messed with . && perhaps if it were just the two of them , she would have been more confident in her ferocity , but it was not , && celestia’s attempt at intimidation was working , even as taiga tried to keep her gaze steady . kept her feet planted where they were . tried not to show weakness .
she didn’t know what she expected from the other girl , yet . only knew her current goal for the night was to escape this lions’ den unharmed . thought before that she could wait it out without being noticed , but now with that fantasy SHATTERED , she was left with this . didn’t know what to make of celestia’s smile . noted how it never reached her eyes . && to taiga it all screamed TRAP .
because following to this girl’s so - called private table would remove her escape route . her only chance if something were to happen . but even that assumed she would be able to run fast enough && far enough without tripping to get away from whoever was trying to chase her . before , that was comforting enough . but now attention had been drawn to her , whether she liked it or not , && the presence of another girl her own age , no matter how predatory , was preferred to that of ANY of the other patrons .
she'd reluctantly push herself away from the wall , though she wouldn’t yet take a step towards the other . still guarded , but with the jittery obedience of a caged animal . knew so much better than to trust this girl . cell phone remained tightly clasped in her hands before her . “ fine . i’m getting tired of standing here anyways . ” not necessarily a lie , but still DRIPPING with distrust . no sugar coating . no niceties . though she would offer a follow - up , spoken in the same level tone . “ who the hell are you , anyways ? ”
