Yes, I would like to have myself as a friend. I'm responsible, genuine and simple, and these are the traits I like about myself!

What has been your favorite aspect of APO so far? Why?

Service is one of my favorite aspects of APO. It’s because through service, I get to help people and make a difference in their lives. I feel that by helping people, I feel true happiness and satisfaction. Growing up, a lot of people have helped me and provided their selfless service. Their service inspire to give back and help others. I really like how service makes people who receive the service happy, and when others are happy, I would be happy too. One of the service I went was the DPNS Rocks. It was basically an annual fundraiser for a preschool. In the event, we were helping with making and selling marshmallows. The kids in the event were very happy when they got a flavored marshmallow with a shape of unicorn. I felt contented when I saw them being happy. Also, I was happy because I got to eat marshmallow. Even though the whole service was 4 hours, it went pretty fast since it was a pretty enjoyable time for me. In the end of the cleaning shift, the event coordinator was very thankful to us being there helping out. This service is one of my favorite ones since I not only felt happy when I contributed my time and effort in the service, but also, I had fun making and eating marshmallows. Besides making friends and connections to people, one of the important reasons that I joined APO was actually because there are so many service opportunities in this fraternity. As a graduating senior, I felt it is definitely meaningful to me to do services in my final quarter.

I am a philanthropist in many discreet and simple ways.

How do you want to be remembered? 

We have all heard the saying, “live every day as if it were your last,” however, not nearly as frequently do we hear people telling us to act in such a way that people would not have anything negative to say if we were to die tomorrow. If I were to perish, I want to be remembered how I live my life to the fullest by discreetly helping others at all times and not selfish nor self-centered. I know that I’m not perfect, but rather an ideal one and there is always something negative that people can say about me if I were to vanish in this world and that is why I always take for granted what others think of me, but I hope people can understand that all my flaws are things I have worked on improving, and every words I spoke or every action I make are presented with utmost integrity. If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything. You can doubt anything, but the only thing that you cannot doubt; is the fact, that you are doubting. Thus I can proudly say, if I were to expire tomorrow, I will have no regrets because I lived a life true to myself and others, and did everything I can for the benefits of all mankind and not for my own personal gain. I live my life the way I lived because I don’t want to have any regrets at the end of my existence in this world. I want people to know that my greatest accomplishment is being who I am. Everyday is a learning process of accepting to acknowledge and appreciate those individuals who does not want to be there whenever I needed them the most, because of them; I did it myself. I want to ensure that the life that I had borrowed is worth living. I live my life everyday following the wise words of these two personal quotes. These two quotes are: regrets never comes first, it always comes last; and whatever your right hand do, your left hand doesn’t need to know. I live my life trying to make regret not an option by always considering if the things that I’m doing are for the common good of others and everyone. I perform acts of kindness because I wholeheartedly want to lend my hand whenever I can.

These are literally top 10 one of the worst things ever :o but damp sleeves since they generally dry faster.

8 years old because it's my lucky number and you're still a child so no responsibilities or worries.

What are the qualities you look for in a friend?

Wholesome.

What is something unique about you that most people don't know?

I can bark like a dog. 

What do you take for granted?

Living in a progressive (for the most part) first world country or even just simply having a roof over my head (as simple and cheesy as that may sound). Coming from a lower middle class family, my parents would always be concerned or fighting about money spending. I always wondered and envied how it'd feel to be born into a wealthy family and not have money/finances be an issue. However, I failed to realize that in the eyes of many people living in a third world country the lifestyle I was living would be considered wealthy to them. My dad always would give me lectures about how I'm so fortunate to be growing up in America where opportunities are endless since I had a roof over my head, food on the table, and education provided to me. I didn't understand the importance of this privilege I have until I got older, I more aware/ "woke" of socioeconomic statuses in third world countries. A few months ago, I took a rideshare with four complete strangers. All of them had the commonality that they're all international students from third world countries. They all talked about their struggles and just like my dad, reminded me how lucky I am to have grown up and lived in the US. In countries like Saudi Arabia, women aren't even allowed to walk outside by themselves and only recently, were just given the right to drive/obtain a license. In the Philippines, some areas are just slums and families live in makeshift homes and don't even have the comfort of sleeping on a mattress. I feel like I take these little things for granted and hope that one day, no one has to worry about issues like this.

What are the qualities you look for in a friend? 

His/her humor. They need to make me laugh because I get bored easily.

What is something unique about you that most people don't know? 

I have an identical twin. 

How do you want to be remembered? Why?

I want to be remembered by my family and close friends for caring for them real well. My end goal is to be able to give back to them by showing them how thankful I am for all they have done for me. I often dream about different career paths that I may embark on and find a way to incorporate my thanks to my family and significant other. For example, if i was able to be a chef, I wanted to fly my parents and significant other to my restaurant and spend a night live cooking them their dishes for their night. In addition, if I decided to become a doctor like a typical asian, I would want to check up on my friends and family every once in awhile to check how they are doing physically so that I can help them in whatever way possible. Also, if I was able to become a soccer player, not that its possible, I would join South Korea's national soccer team and I could get my family and friends VIP tickets to all of my games. If anything, through my actions are how I want to be remembered. To me, it means a lot when someone performs an action to show that they care for me rather than verbally telling me something, allowing me to resonate with the saying “actions speak louder than words”. I hope that I can be remembered in this way by giving back as much as I can to my family and my friends in any way I can depending on the career I choose to take.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far? Why?

My greatest accomplishment so far is being the first person in my family and extended family to go to college. As a first-gen college student, I have found myself second-guessing my abilities in school at times. I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way that probably could have been prevented if I had experienced family members help guide me. However, my family has always been supportive in whatever I wanted to do, and if it meant only getting a high school diploma, then that was okay. Yet, I wanted to do more for my family, and going to college was the next big step. After taking action to make myself college-bound, I noticed others following in my footsteps. I have a niece coming to me for advice in how to be college ready as a middle schooler, cousins who dropped out of community college years ago who have found themselves inspired to go back to school and pursue higher education, and recent college-bound cousins asking me for advice with financial aid, internships, etc. My aunts and uncles have also started to prioritize the value of education and want to help support my cousins to go to a four-year university. I have become a resource in my family. Priorities have changed for the better and I am happy to be a catalyst for it. Being a first-gen college student is insanely hard, but it’s all been worth it since seeing how much positive change has come out of it.

What is something unique about you that most people don't know?

I like to watch a lot of sad movies, cry, and then take ugly pictures of myself.

What is the most memorable lesson you have learned?

 When I was a little kid, I really liked Pokemon and I used to keep up with the series every week, but my absolute favorite is the 157th episode Advanced Generation. Ash, May and the whole gang travel to this deserted town with barely any people. May manages to stray away from the entire group, passing by an abandoned train station where she meets this nice elderly woman named Edna. Every day, Edna visits the station waiting for her husband, Jonathan, to come back from his business trip even though he was involved into an accident during the trip. After hearing this story, May gets transported back in time with Meowth and they manage to stop Jonathan from leaving for the trip entirely by making it snow with Squirtle’s ice beam. Edna reunites with Jonathan, while May and Meowth return to the present time, finding out the formerly boring city is super lively and bustling with exciting things. They also find out that Jonathan is alive, and that he’s still together with Edna. This episode came out in 2006 and I still about it in 2019 because it taught so me many things as a six year old. First, you deserve anything less from a significant other than someone like Edna. Second, the teamwork between May and Meowth seem to exemplify the fact that spending time with people you do not necessarily like can produce surprising results. Lastly, you can always learn from anything as long as you keep your mind open.

If you came back in your next life as an animal, what would you be and why?

If I could come back in the next life as an animal I would be a panda because I want to just eat and lay around every day while people admire how cute and dumb I am like falling off a tree while climbing a bamboo tree.

Do you miss any discontinued products?

A product that is discontinued and I miss is the iPod Nano because I like listening to music and I thought to have a device solely for the purpose of listening to music on its own is cool, plus it’s cute and portable.

Would you rather fall in love once and have it last forever (while wondering if there was something better) or have many relationships (but never settle)?

I would rather fall in love once and let it last forever because I don’t want to go through the many experiences of having my heart broken and simping about my exes.

If you had only one sense (hearing, touch, sight, etc.), which would you want?

If I could only have one sense it would be to see because I don't want my whole world to be dark and be left wondering how everything looks like in my head.

If money or expectations were not an issue would you still be majoring in what you are now? If not, what would you be interested in studying?

If money and expectation was not an issue I would want to major in film making/directing because I love the creative side of capturing motions and holding on to it as a form of art and I like the idea of bossing people around.

What is the most important thing in life to you?

The most important thing to me in life is to be happy or at least find happiness and think about positive outcomes. I’m a very pessimistic person so I tend to think about the bad things that will happen before the good. So, I want to be able to change my chain of thoughts about negative things into positive outcomes that can happen. I feel like everyone deserves happiness even if it comes from the smallest things. Because there is so much hated and negative things in life people need to be able to understand and see that life can have its ups. That there are also good things in life that can happen. Life will always come at you from behind and spank you in the ass and there will always be a low point in life but I always want to choose to be able to see the better and positive side of tomorrow and the day after and after. I think it’s a really good thing for people to be able to find some sort of light and positive thoughts so that people can find the motivation and will to move on and be happy in their lives. Whether it’s about money, work, school, family, friends, or relationship there’s hope and light down the tunnel. I sound like a very sad person but outside of all this, I promise I am a very fun and chill person. This is just something I would like to share to all you sad boys and girls out there.

What is the most important thing in life to you? 

The most important thing in life is boba. Without boba, life wouldn't be worth living. Imagine how hard it would be to study for an exam or decide what to do when you're out with your friends and you're not getting boba. It would be pointless. Without boba, I have no existence. Boba is my existence. Even though I've been warned on numerous occasions about the long-term health implications of having too much boba, I am willing to take those risks because I know that I would go through crippling depression without it. Boba is love. Boba is life.

If you came back in your next life as an animal, what would you be and why?

Yooooo, I would be a giraffe because they are tall. As y'all probably have witnessed, I’m a smol bean. I am only 5' 1'', so it would be nice to have a view over people heads, rather than staring up and hurting my neck.

Do you miss any discontinued products?

Omigod~ I miss those YOGOS yogurt snacks that used to be around when I was a kid. I would always beg my mom to buy them for me, but she would tell me that if I was really hungry, I would eat the beans we had at home instead. My favorite flavor was the strawberry one!

Would you rather fall in love once and have it last forever (while wondering if there was something better) or have many relationships (but never settle)?

Personally, I would fall in love once because I had to see the good in that one person that I chose, right? I like stability, so being in that one relationship would fulfill that need. Also, what if you get someone weird or mean in those many relationships? No thanks, I'm good with one person forever.

If you had only one sense (hearing, touch, sight, etc.), which would you want?

I would want sight! I’d rather see the world and all that's in it than anything else. Also, there are medical devices for some of the other sense, so if I had the option, I could get them.

If money or expectations were not an issue would you still be majoring in what you are now? If not, what would you be interested in studying?

I think I would still be studying my major, but would add another. I would add french, because I am currently minoring it and would like to complete more classes for it. Since I don't have enough space or time to do it now because of my major's upper divs, my next best idea was minoring in it.

Who is your role model and why?

My mom and dad are my role models! My parents immigrated from Mexico when they were teenagers. They had absolutely nothing with them when they crossed the border. My dad at one point got sent back to Mexico but was back in the United States the next day! As they were building their life here, they had many struggles to overcome. My dad worked 10+ hour work days everyday. His work was very labor intensive, as he was a construction worker. My mom also worked for a period time at a fish factory and cleaning houses and hotel rooms. To say the least, my parents literally worked hard to maintain themselves. At the age of 19, my parents had my oldest sister. My mom had to stop working to take care of her, so they only had one source of income. As the years passed by, my parents had my two other older sisters, got their citizenship, and started a construction company of their own. My dad had worked as a  construction worker for such a long time that this doing of having his own business was a big success. Even though he had his own company, my dad still worked everyday. As a child, I remember waiting for him to get home from work at the window of my parent's room. My dad didn't stop working everyday until I was in middle school or so. He told me at the point in time, "Mija, you know you've made it when you can finally not work everyday". He was right. My dad had made his business a success. In the meantime, my mom took care of us. She put up with us 5 kids when my dad wasn't home and still was able to make dinner for dad. Both my parents played an essential role in taking care of us, even if it was in different ways! I truly appreciate both their efforts and struggles in raising my siblings and I. They always made us feel loved no matter what. I think their story always inspires me to be the best person I can be! They left the safely and comfort of their country for a better life and eventually to give us the best life as well. Also, they always tell me to finish my education, so I do not need to depend on anyone. My parent's story always lets me know that I can do anything and that if I put the hard work and thought into something, that it will come true!

I would have the sense of sight because there’s just so many amazing things to see in this world.

I'd probably still be majoring in Human Development but maybe I'd minor in something that relates to my hobbies like film.

What is the definition of success to you? 

To me, success means (as cheesy as it sounds) being happy with my life. I want to be happy with both my career and my personal life. Most importantly, I want to make decisions based on what I want because at the end of the day it’s my life. In terms of a career, I would be successful if enjoyed going to work and if my salary gave me the freedom to do what I want. I love to travel, so hopefully my job will fund my world travels in the future. I also want to be good at what I do and respected in my profession, so getting a good education and paying attention in school (stop skipping class Brianna!!) would be a great start. I want to work in the health field, so I’d see it as a huge success if I do a good job helping people. Similarly, I just want to be happy with my personal life. I want to have friends who are genuine. I want to be friends with people I have a great, healthy relationship with. I don’t have a set goal of whether I want to be married or not or how many kids I want (although a family would be nice LOL). Honestly, I’m just going with the flow with that one. Outside of work, I want to pursue my hobbies (NETFLIX!! Nah jk I have other hobbies (but like not really)). To be successful, my choices and decisions should reflect my desires and not others’ expectations of me.

A discontinued product that I miss is the whistling candies that turn into gum afterwards.

I would rather have many relationships and never settle because you can only hoe around once in your life time(;

If you had only one sense (hearing, touch, sight, etc.), which would you want?

One sense I would want is taste so I can taste the burning sensation of fire noodles, hot pot, Korean barbecue, and sushi.

If money or expectations were not an issue would you still be majoring in what you are now? If not, what would you be interested in studying?

If money or expectations were not an issue, I would still be in my major because I really enjoy creating videos for myself and other people. It allows me to test my creativity and technical skills onto a video.

What are your strengths and weaknesses? How do you plan on working on your weaknesses?

A strength of mine is collaboration, organization, and time management. As an intern for Asian American Association (AAA), I work with my manager to create content, including capturing footage at events to include highlights for an upcoming video project to showcase it at the next meeting. In order to produce any film, attention to detail and organization is important in selecting and compiling various shots. Time management and the ability to meet deadlines is also essential in ensuring consistent productivity. After having multiple jobs in high school, I have developed these skills and it has allowed myself to apply these strengths to my daily life routine. These are my few strengths, but I do not think I have FULLY developed those skills quite yet. I am still working on it to make it more consistent and exceptional.

A weakness of mine is the ability to network around new people. I tend to be shy around others at first but as I interact with that person more, I get comfortable in my own skin. I plan on working on my weaknesses by putting myself out there and joining clubs to improve on my weaknesses. Another weakness of mine is procrastination. If I were given an assignment and this has been assigned two weeks in advance, I would wait until the very last moment to do it. Since I know I have two weeks to finish the assignment. For example, I started writing my Xpressions when I first got the email. Now it is the end of the week… the Xpressions are due tomorrow and I am doing it the night before it is due.

If you can come back in your next life as an animal, what would you be and why? 

If I could come back in the next life as an animal I would be a corgi because they are so fluffy, fat, short, and cute.

I rather fall in love once and have it last forever while wondering if there was something better because I would never be happy having so many relationships.I would want sight because I think seeing is the best sense.

I would want sight because I think seeing is the best sense. 

If money or expectations were not an issue would you still be majoring in what you are now? If not, what would you be interested in studying?

If money or expectations were not an issue I’d still major in Computer Science. I love the problem solving aspect of coding a project and the satisfaction of finally solving it.

What is the definition of success to you?

The definition of success to me is being proud of myself and my accomplishments, being happy, and making my parents proud. My parents have worked super hard day and night for me to go to college and I just want to be able to support them financially and make sure they know that I’m happy and to show them all their efforts were not wasted. They are my greatest source of motivation to do well in school. Even though I know my parents are going to be happy with anything that makes me happy, I still have this underlying pressure to do well and try my best. Aside from these core aspects of success to me, I also have a lot of minor aspects of success that I want to accomplish. One main success checkpoint for me is to graduate college and to get a job as a Software Engineer at a tech company and make a six-figure salary so I can help support my parents. Ideally, I would want to work at Google because of all the benefits and be able to work on all cool stuff that Google does. Another checkpoint would be to get a corgi because I have always wanted one since I can remember. Additionally, I want to have the luxury of being able to travel the world and eat everything. I also want to buy both my parents a car and myself a car of course. I would want to get a Lamborghini Huracan but realistically I’d probably buy a Honda Civic or a Lexus is250.

A super power I would love to have is reading people's minds cuz I'm hella insecure and want to know what people think of me LOLOL.

Who's a fictional character you see yourself as? 

I see myself as tinker bell because I'm needy and i'll die without attention.

What’s something about yourself that you're most proud of? 

This is mushy but I'm really proud of learning to love myself, ya boi did that.

What does friendship mean to you?

To me friendship means having someone to do the little things with. Some of the best memories I have made with my friends have been made just talking over Boba or some hella good food but those are the things I remember when I look back at a friendship I have with someone. I think, at least to me, that friendship really means loyalty. A true friend is going to ride for you no matter how long its been and should be someone to turn to when things get rough. A friend should support you but in addition, they should hold you accountable for your actions and let you know honestly when you have made a wrong choice or let you know when your approaching an issue from an incorrect manner. Friendship means supporting each other but doing so in a way that is constructive to both of your personal growth and not blindly supporting your friend in a situation that is detrimental or harmful to your friend in anyway. Friendship also means digging deeper than what your friend presents on the surface, maybe through some Sad Boi Hourzzz. It means taking each other for all the things your friend has been through in the past and loving them for it and how far they have come instead of in spite of it. Lastly, a friend should lift you up and push you forward instead of trying to hold you back. A friend should encourage you to be the best you can be, even if that means that they grow without you.

What’s something about yourself that you’re most proud of?

I think I am good at taking care of others and being aware if people are uncomfortable in a situation.

Why did I decide to join APO?

I joined APO mostly because I wanted to meet more people. Although I have friends from my high school at UC Davis, I didn’t want to rely only on them and I wanted to expand my circle. At first, it was pretty hard to get to know the people in my dorm because they were all taking the same classes. I felt like everyone was already connecting and forming groups, so I didn’t really go out to the lounge to meet the people on my floor. I also thought that a lot of my friends were already finding their own groups and people they could click with. Since I also wanted that kind of connection with people at college, I decided to check out different clubs and organizations and eventually went to Meet a Bro. During the event, I thought everyone I met were friendly and easy to talk to, and I was down to go to more APO events. I also thought that by joining APO, it would help give me a reason to go out more often instead of staying in my dorms. It also got a lot easier to talk to the people in my dorms once I started opening up to the people I met in APO. Another reason why I wanted to join was because I have been doing service since I was in middle school and I enjoyed the experiences I had while volunteering at different events. By joining the frat, I thought I would be able to have a lot more opportunities to volunteer.

What’s something about yourself that you're most proud of? 

My eyelashes.  I used to dab coconut oil onto my lashes 3 times a day and it actually worked. Only 3 times, if 4 times your lashes might fall off.

What does friendship mean to you?

According to Wikipedia, "Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people. ". According to me, friendship is a relationship between two friends. Wait they are the same thing. Anyways, being friends means to be a companion who you can hang out, deep talk and travel with. A friend is someone who supports and be there for you no matter what. A friend does not judge you because they accept who you are. A friend listens to your problems and helps you resolve them. It's hard to define friendship because it's so good you cannot write it you have to feel it deep in your heart, ya feel? I’m sobbing right now typing this. I’m a feeling more than thinking kinda guy. Friends do not judge when you believe in zodiac sign a little bit. I’m Aquarius, looking for friends who are Sagittarius, Leo and Gemini. Friends take pictures for each other to post on Instagram and they hype you up like “ OMG YASSS” , “ :fire emoji: ”, “SLAY KING/QUEEN <3”, “WHOSE MAN IS THIS, :eye emoji:”, “MY BOI LOOKING GOOD : crying emoji:”, " OKAY I SEE YOU : eye emoji again:" when you post something. Friends are not fake, they are real. Oh, Friendship means to add each other on Snapchat (@huyvo2501) and Instagram (@huyqvo). Friends add each other on Venmo too. Friends are fun. Shout out to my old friends and new friends. I have friends. I love my friends. I love leadership, service and friendship.

What’s a superpower you’d love to have for 45 minutes?

Teleportation so I can travel to Antarctica for a bit. I say Antarctica because it’s not like people can just casually hop on a plane and go vacation there like it’s Hawaii, so I’d rather teleport somewhere cool and uncommon. Also there are penguins there and they’re super cute.

What’s the superior noodle? (Pasta, Pho, etc.)

This is so hard uGhHhHhH… probably Pho… or ramen!

Who’s a fictional character you see yourself as?

Oof probably Shuri (from MCU) because I’m basically a walking meme who likes science and bothering my sister with my jokes. Also who wouldn’t want to be as badass as Shuri?? SHE’S SO DOPE!

What’s something about yourself that you’re most proud of?

At the moment, I think I’m most proud of being in school. Although it can be pretty hard on me, I’m proud to say that I’m still here trying my best.

What does friendship mean to you?

Friendship is big part of my happiness. I would not be where I am now without my friends supporting me. Whenever I feel down, I know I can count on my friends to cheer me up and help me relieve my stress. Whether it is just by listening to me rant or by distracting me, they help me forget about reality for a bit and just make me feel happy. Friendship is not just about having a few things in common with someone and then automatically clicking and becoming best friends for 20 years (but I mean this could be the case for some people lol). It is also being considerate of the other person’s feelings, respecting them as a human being, accepting them for who they are, and letting each other know what is going on inside their minds. If you can do all of that with the friendships you make throughout life, it is easy to make good memories with the person. Even if the friendship may not last long because you may drift apart, at least you will be able to look back at positive memories. You also do not have to just limit your friends to the random people you meet at school or work. I consider some of my family members as my friends too. Some family members are there from Day 1 and have seen you grow as a person and support you along the way as well. Friends are the people who will truly stay by your side forever.

My ability to squeeze into small spaces (if you’re going on vacation, lemme hide in your suitcase)

Why did you decide to pledge for APO?

I wanted to pledge APO because I wanted to meet new people and make friends. Because I’ve been surrounded by the same people for most of my life, moving to college and not knowing many people was a difficult transition. It’s hard for me to open up to new people and make new friends. My roommate’s (An Do) sister is a member of APO at UCSD and recommended that An and I join APO. I wanted to join APO in order to not only be able to have an easier experience making connections with new people but also to improve myself and make myself more sociable and willing to open up to others. During rush week, I saw that a lot of the actives were really close to each other which further persuaded me to join in order to make close friends of my own. Everyone seemed really friendly and welcoming, so I felt excited about joining this community of very nice people. Also, during Fall quarter, I felt that I had too much free time that I would spend just watching movies and YouTube videos. As a service fraternity, APO provided opportunities that allowed me to be able to spend my free time doing a lot of better, more productive things than just laying on my bed, staring at my laptop all day. After pledging APO, I have also learned how to better manage my time. I hope to be able to form connections that last for a lifetime in APO, and I’m excited to finally be an official APO member.
