Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is an amazing movie - I really, really love that he calls attention to the fact that you don't need a nuclear war, a meteor strike or rogue AI for civilization to collapse. It happens when people stop respecting the basic agreed-upon rules and principles that make it possible for people to exist as one, as a community.

It doesn't really matter if it's the corruption of sacred rites, or entertaining the idea that elections, court rulings, basic freedoms, constitutions can be defied or denied if you don't like the results or you don't like what they defend. It's all about tearing up the structure that makes our life as we know it possible.

And he shows that when it happens, you actually feel like you're winning, and people initially treat it as a heroic and great act - you did the right thing, you corrected the wrongs, you won - because when you cut the roots of the tree, it takes time until it becomes obvious that you caused irreversible damage.
