hi sorry to bother you but i was wondering what are some reasons you hate stalin and the ussr so much? this might be a stupid question but im still new to socialism and my sources of information seem to be quite sympathetic to the way of the tank sometimes
Just getting around to this ask, sorry.
One of the most prime reasons is the Soviet-Nazi non-aggression pact, known formally as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. As the description implies, the MRP was a peace treaty signed between the Soviets and Nazis about a week before the invasion of Poland.
The Nazis commenced their invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939, and the Soviet Union theirs on 17 September of the same year (1 day before my birthday, but beside the point). The two nations divided up Poland, and despite having the manpower, Stalin and his officials maintained the secret pact and did not stand up to Germany until Hitler broke the pact with Operation Barabrossa on 22 June 1941.
Stalin himself used antisemitic buzzwords in his dissertations against Trotsky, who was Jewish, or at least of Jewish ancestry. The Soviet state-run press spoke of Jews as âgroveling before the West,â helping âAmerican imperialism,â âslavish imitation of bourgeois cultureâ and âbourgeois aestheticism.â
There was also the suggested âJewish Autonomous Oblastâ, which wouldâve sequestered the Jewish population of the Soviet union in the far east, bordering the bitterly-cold Heilongjiang province in China. From Wikipedia, Stalin and Antisemitism:
To offset the growing Jewish national and religious aspirations of Zionism and to successfully categorize Soviet Jews under Stalinâs nationality policy an alternative to the Land of Israel was established with the help of Komzet and OZET in 1928. The Jewish Autonomous Oblast with the center in Birobidzhan in the Russian Far East was to become a âSoviet Zionâ. Yiddish, rather than âreactionaryâ Hebrew, would be the national language, and proletarian socialist literature and arts would replace Judaism as the quintessence of culture. Despite a massive domestic and international state propaganda campaign, the Jewish population there never reached 30% (as of 2003 it was only about 1.2%). The experiment ground to a halt in the mid-1930s, during Stalinâs first campaign of purges, as local leaders were not spared during the purges.
Iâm not Jewish, but their poor treatment in the Soviet Union is a major reason why I donât stand behind it. The aesthetics might be nice, and we can respect legendary Nazi-killers like Vasiliy Zatzyev and Lyudmila Pavlichenko without looking up to statism or Stalinism.
The origins of the Soviet Union are even stranger. Lenin supported a system of state capitalism, which is what the Soviet Union started as, and what it remained as until its death in 1991. From Lenin, The Tax in Kind:
State capitalism would be a step forward as compared with the present state of affairs in our Soviet Republic. If in approximately six monthsâ time state capitalism became established in our Republic, this would be a great success and a sure guarantee that within a year socialism will have gained a permanently firm hold and will have become invincible in this country.
From Lenin, To the Russian Colony in North America:
The state capitalism, which is one of the principal aspects of the New Economic Policy, is, under Soviet power, a form of capitalism that is deliberately permitted and restricted by the working class. Our state capitalism differs essentially from the state capitalism in countries that have bourgeois governments in that the state with us is represented not by the bourgeoisie, but by the proletariat, who has succeeded in winning the full confidence of the peasantry.Unfortunately, the introduction of state capitalism with us is not proceeding as quickly as we would like it. For example, so far we have not had a single important concession, and without foreign capital to help develop our economy, the latterâs quick rehabilitation is inconceivable.Â
Additionally, the Soviets crushed anarchist movements in the Union. There was no room for error if you were in the Soviet Union- once the anarchists had served their purpose, they were often executed or âdisappearedâ to gulags.
The major example of this is the Kronstadt Rebellion. This originated when Soviet production plummeted and the anarchist sections of the Soviet Baltic Fleet deserted. They formed a new constitution of sorts in Petrograd:
Immediate new elections to the Soviets; the present Soviets no longer express the wishes of the workers and peasants. The new elections should be held by secret ballot, and should be preceded by free electoral propaganda for all workers and peasants before the elections.
Freedom of speech and of the press for workers and peasants, for the Anarchists, and for the Left Socialist parties.
The right of assembly, and freedom for trade union and peasant associations.
The organisation, at the latest on 10 March 1921, of a Conference of non-Party workers, soldiers and sailors of Petrograd, Kronstadt and the Petrograd District.
The liberation of all political prisoners of the Socialist parties, and of all imprisoned workers and peasants, soldiers and sailors belonging to working class and peasant organisations.
The election of a commission to look into the dossiers of all those detained in prisons and concentration camps.
The abolition of all political sections in the armed forces; no political party should have privileges for the propagation of its ideas, or receive State subsidies to this end. In place of the political section, various cultural groups should be set up, deriving resources from the State.
The immediate abolition of the militia detachments set up between towns and countryside.
The equalisation of rations for all workers, except those engaged in dangerous or unhealthy jobs.
The abolition of Party combat detachments in all military groups; the abolition of Party guards in factories and enterprises. If guards are required, they should be nominated, taking into account the views of the workers.
The granting to the peasants of freedom of action on their own soil, and of the right to own cattle, provided they look after them themselves and do not employ hired labour.
We request that all military units and officer trainee groups associate themselves with this resolution.
We demand that the Press give proper publicity to this resolution.
We demand the institution of mobile workersâ control groups.
We demand that handicraft production be authorised, provided it does not utilise wage labour.[7]
The Soviets responded to this by labeling them as members of the Black Hundreds, who⌠didnât actually exist anymore. They then forcibly retook the city from the socialists who had drafted a constitution and set out their goals in a fair manner, and executed upwards of 2000 people.
This is a long ask, and I can go into more detail if you need, but these transgressions are more than enough for most leftists to discard Soviet worship as a whole.
Aug 21st - Sept 9th 2018 US Prison Strike
On August 21st, prisoners across the United States and beyond began a strike against prison slavery. This strike comes hot on the heels of years of previous prison strikes, call-in campaigns, and full fledged uprisings, as well as inspiring actions against ICE and massive anti-fascist mobilizations throughout August. Not only are all of these struggles connected, but our best chances of succeeding in any of them lies in building momentum across these different movements and beyond.
#PrisonStrike
Iâve seen almost nothing on my dashboard about the prison strike so far, so I thought Iâd make a post about it.
On August 21st, prisoners throughout 17 states began a prison strike, after a riot in Lee Correctional Institute in South Carolina. The strike is supposed to last until September 9th. The strikers issued ten demands:
Immediate improvements to the conditions of prisons and prison policies that recognize the humanity of imprisoned men and women.
An immediate end to prison slavery. All persons imprisoned in any place of detention under United States jurisdiction must be paid the prevailing wage in their state or territory for their labor.
The Prison Litigation Reform Act must be rescinded, allowing imprisoned humans a proper channel to address grievances and violations of their rights.
The Truth in Sentencing Act and the Sentencing Reform Act must be rescinded so that imprisoned humans have a possibility of rehabilitation and parole. No human shall be sentenced to Death by Incarceration or serve any sentence without the possibility of parole.
An immediate end to the racial overcharging, over-sentencing, and parole denials of Black and brown humans. Black humans shall no longer be denied parole because the victim of the crime was white, which is a particular problem in southern states.
An immediate end to racist gang enhancement laws targeting Black and brown humans.
No imprisoned human shall be denied access to rehabilitation programs at their place of detention because of their label as a violent offender.
State prisons must be funded specifically to offer more rehabilitation services.
Pell grants must be reinstated in all US states and territories.
The voting rights of all confined citizens serving prison sentences, pretrial detainees, and so-called âex-felonsâ must be counted. Representation is demanded. All voices count.
Corporations like Whole Foods, McDonaldâs, Wendyâs, Walmart, Starbucks, and more have used prison slave labor, where prisoners are paid $1.00 a day to make millions for bosses. In a country where slavery is abolished in name only, where we imprison more people than any other country, and where the majority of inmates (despite a recent decline) remain people of color, itâs important for outsiders to assist any way we can. Â
If you want information about the strike, as well as actions you can take, check out Itâs Going Down. The Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee is also posting updates on Twitter.

âCapitalism made your-â
No. LABOUR made it. LABOUR made my phone, my laptop, the internet, this website, my clothing, my house, all social media, and everything else. LABOUR makes things, Capitalism doesnât because economic systems donât âmakeâ anything, they just determine who gets paid for making things.
I need to get out of here I have never made any type of post like this and itâs going to be long and annoying but I just canât fucking take this anymore. Iâm Sophie, I am a 19 year old latina girl who has been living with an abusive man double my age for the last couple of years after running away. I feel trapped here and I have no means to leave safely at all. Iâm mentally ill and on disability which doesnât leave me with any room to get away from him and he is extremely controlling even when it comes to money and what I should have to owe him for living with him. I have no family to lean on and the friends I did have, he has cut me off completely from them. Heâs smashed my phone when he got paranoid leaving me with nothing and no one. He monitored my phone and my social media so I have had to make separate accounts to try and hide him from seeing what I post. Not only that but he is racist, he hates women, believes in white supremacy, thinks that all girls should only be with men and give themselves to men whether they want to or not.. it just goes on and on and never stops. He always talks about genocide, thinks women ask for too much, ect. He has actually gone to jail in the past for assault. He threatens me with violence if I donât do the things he asks for all the time and my mental health has gone downhill since I came here. There are so many things that have happened that I canât even talk about. I am always being taken advantage of, threatened, manipulated into sex, into giving him money, just so that I wonât be out on the streets with no where to go. This type of life is making me want to kill myself if I canât get a change soon but I am terrified of the thought of leaving him. I want to get a restraining order so that he canât come after me, but if I do that I will have no place to live because I canât afford the apartment I live in if heâs not here. I need help getting out. There is no way I can afford to pay a deposit, pet fee, and first months rent on a cheaper apartment with the income and type of life I have right now. He knows about how much money I bring in a month, and with my bills and everything I have very little. I know what I need is a lot, my goal is around $500 dollars even though that wonât begin to cover it, I donât expect much help at all. Even a couple dollars I have that I can hide from him will hopefully add up. I was at risk of being homeless when I met him because of leaving my family. I thought that because he had issues too that he was a good person at heart but I canât take the way that he treats me anymore, it has only gotten worse. If you donât believe me, or think I shouldnât be asking for this kind of help or think this is all my fault just block me. I have had too many people act like I am over exaggerating or that Iâm crazy. I will just block you. my paypal email is [email protected] if you can help at all and if you cant i understand I know everyone is struggling and other people need more help than I do but I would be so thankful if you would please please reblog this post for me. Thank you.

Some of the anarchist posters seen around Brisbane
âWhat of the most consistently radical and critical forms of anarchism, those that purport to reject the civilized way of life altogether? US-based radicals John Zerzan and Kevin Tucker have self-consciously staked out an anarchist position, Anarcho-Primitivism, for nearly three decades. They present this position as both distinct from and as a corrective to the kind of anarchist views that constitute the norm, toward which they are regularly hostile; but my assertion is that they have never successfully escaped the trappings of slave ideology in their critique. In an effort at hedging, partially conscious of their religious motifs, they have each independently and repeatedly claimed not be offering an ideology, but a âcritique with implications.â And in an effort to escape the Humanism of past iterations of anarchism, they place biocentrism or Nature at the core of their view. Taking them in good faith, I have no doubt this effort at escaping the incomplete critiques of the past and present is genuine. And, certainly, radicals everywhere have good reason to be thankful to Zerzan and Tucker for their very important critiques of previously underexplored aspects of our crisis, such as agriculture, mass society, and technology. But AP is ultimately another theory of partial liberation, another iteration of post-monotheistic civilized discourse. Convolutedly and covertly, the AP analysis repeats these same failures of dualism, reification, Humanism, and millenarianism. AP is another doctrine based on being âa true believer,â one who knows and follows the One, the Good, and the True; one who believes in their righteousness in the present and their inevitable apocalyptic deliverance in the future; one who hates and wants to punish non-believers and villains; and one who does not sully themselves by suffering uncleanliness and doubt.â

23-30 August 2018: 6th annual week of solidarity with anarchist prisoners
We are coming back with global week of solidarity with anarchist prisoners. Since last year, a lot has changed in our countries, but the general tendency is going in the worse direction with more repressions applied against anarchists not only in Europe but worldwide. With this in mind, we are calling for sixth annual week of solidarity!
Last year lots of people sent us their reports from different parts of the world and we hope that this year the tradition will grow even bigger. We need to support our comrades! Use this week to spread the information about anarchists behind bars. Donât have prisoners in your country? No worry, support prisoners from other countries in your region or use those days to raise awareness of repression mechanisms and how anarchist communities can fight against them!
Build up security culture, support your local anarchist prisoners and fight back.
Do not hesitate to continue sending your reports to [email protected]!
Nobody is free till all are free!
