When the letter came she could hardly believe it. Ages of trying to get back into tournaments finally paid off and she’d been invited to participate in a national Duel Monsters Tournament. This was it, this was the break she’d been waiting for. Obviously she would have gotten into things sooner, but after finishing off school and moving house a couple times she’d hardly had a moment to really apply herself. Small, local tournaments filled her free time, but nothing with cash prizes and that public recognition she claimed.

Chewing her lip, she read over the letter again. It was a couple cities away, she’d have to stay in a hotel. Leaving home meant leaving Bakura behind but… could he even handle being alone? His drug habits might relapse with her gone…

She decided it was best to bring it up to him and see what he thought and headed into the living room with the letter.

“You got a sec? I wanna talk with you about something.”

Bakura looked up from the game he was playing on the television just in time to become the victim of a headshot. He turned back to the TV and groaned at his loss, but left the killscreen on in order to focus on Jou as she came into the room. 

He had the heart and soul of a thief, so he was usually pretty observant when things felt off. He noticed the letter in her hands and immediately wondered if it was bad news. Was it a bad bill? Was someone coming after her? Was it an archaic ransom note? There was only one way to know.

He patted the cushion next to him, inviting her to take a seat. “What’s up?”
