originally an angst fic, featuring my oc after dante's supposed death on my au but it kinda turned into a vent fic on how dante hates the silence LOL, didn't really like how it turned out though so its gonna be archived here. more under the cut so it wouldn't flood your screen much
(i am still on canto II, and while i don't mind spoilers that much, please refrain from talking about major spoilers here. thank you.)
silence is a complex thing, though it shows itself simple.
silence, in definition, is a phenomena after the cacophony of sounds and voices, of the emptiness after a conversation or a music played through. it is present in the absence of sound, and it is present in the dark of the night. this is the literal definition of the word, and has been since its creation, though this is not its only interpretation of the word— this is literal, afterall.
silence, in its presence, is a duality depending on the listener, so to speak. silence can be the peace after a rough day at work or school, can be the calm after a storm has passed, it can be shaped into serenity where chaos had been a consistent presence and by which had dissolved into nothingness;
silence is also the constant nagging of worries and anxiety, a plague bearing doom that is yet to come, a storm that has not landed yet. silence gives way to the darkest thoughts of the mind and stays until it is broken by an outside factor. this is the other duality of silence; serenity and insanity, one brings calmness while the other brings out the worst of the mind.
Dante had always hated the silence, despite their head now a clock, the minute and hour hand only ever moves whenever they are speaking to their sinners, never moving an inch whenever they aren’t speaking. Even as their memories were wiped out, they still hated the silence— it brought unpleasant thoughts that halted their work as a manager.
(They try not to think too much when it happens. The last time then did, they nearly had a mental breakdown which resulted in nearly alerting their sinners before Charon got them out of their stupor. They had promptly apologized to the conductor, which the girl had just rubbed off and continued towards her seat.)
