let trans people decide what is or isnt transphobic
let disabled people decide what is or isnt ableist
stop letting majorities decide what is or isnt offensive to a group of people they arent even a part of
so, i did actually watch the new south park, and it's not good.
before i start getting more “it’s satire!! it’s just satire!!” messages, let me say that this was very niche satire, and it’s going to fly right over the majority of the cis audience’s head.
here’s the premise:
cartman begins claiming to be nonbinary to get access to the girls’ bathroom so he can poop in a nicer/more private bathroom. there is protest from the girls and eventually the school remodels the janitor’s closet into an “Other” bathroom for cartman to use. to get back at him, Wendy also claims to be trans and enters the “Other” bathroom and stares at him, encouraging him to go about his business and making him uncomfortable.
Meanwhile Randy is actually Lorde, and he explains that he became Lorde in order to use the nicer women’s bathroom to shit in. (Stan becomes confused about gender and also uses the “Other” bathroom.) A woman at Randy’s workplace brings up complaints about Randy/Lorde using the women’s bathroom, and it’s suggested that Randy uses a private transgender bathroom they plan to build. Lorde releases a song about using the women’s room regardless and they let Randy continue to use the women’s bathroom.
At the end the school votes to get rid of the trans bathroom, allow all students to use whichever bathroom they are more comfortable in, and remodel the “Other” bathroom into a “Cissies” bathroom for “people who are too concerned with [the genders of others]”
now, to address this:
1. Cartman is the literal embodiement of a troll blog. I’ve seen a lot of posts saying “cartman represents the trans community on tumblr!!!!!” and if you’ve been saying that, chances are you’re a big ole transphobe looking for an excuse to hate trans people. This is such niche satire, though, that no viewer is going to understand that nonbinary genders are legitimate and deserving of respect; instead any nonbinary trans person is just a Cartman.
2. The “discomfort” of the women at Randy’s workplace is a reflection of the transphobia and danger actual real life trans women face using public bathrooms; it’s really not funny and the Randy arc sends another message that “trans women are just men who want to shit in the ladies’ room.”
3. The ending writes off nonbinary people as just Cartman “trolling” the school.
The gist is that the satire in this episode is going to be used to justify real life transphobia, it mocks actual trans problems, and it’s not good. it doesn’t “further our cause” or “educate people” about gender. Don’t try to defend it.
you thought i was basing my south park opinions on hearsay? here are some facts then:
satire is defined as being about tearing down the status quo with comedy. south park is a multi-million dollar franchise for a company called viacom, and the show has been on the air since the 90s. at least 2 million people watch each episode when it airs, and millions more watch it on their DVR, or online, or in reruns on one of the several channels it is syndicated on. if i go to a clothing store i can buy many t-shirts with a picture of cartman or kenny on it, and if i go on steam i can spend 40 US dollars on an rpg based on south park. if i go to any high school in the US, many of the students will tell me they watch south park every week and emphatically agree with its opinions, and even a few of the teachers would likely admit that it’s their favorite show. this isn’t even counting its influence outside of the united states.
so knowing all these things i will reiterate the opinion i stated once again:
south park IS the status quo. it cannot be satire
