Your showing up does have a nice nostalgic symmetry. Style points.

I made the mistake of not coming after you once, Lizzie, I’m not gonna do that again no matter how brave you are. And I suppose you just expect me to go weak at the knees and fall into your arms and cry hysterically and say we’ll just figure this whole thing out. A bi-continental relationship with our daughters being raised here and there and you and I just picking up where we left off and growing old together…

The thing about achievement-driven people or terribly ambitious individuals is that we always feel failure a lot harder than we feel success. Over time, the happiness we get from each achievement will get smaller and smaller, and the sadness we feel from each rejection/failure will get bigger. Eventually, this creates an imbalance in our lives and we become unhappy and terrified of change because we don’t want to fail again. Right in front of our eyes, we will become what we feared most: stagnant.
But even if we realize what is happening (and oftentimes, people don’t), the fear of failure traps us in this low moment. We may be comfortable in our current lives, with our current job title, with our body, with our minds. Why fix something if it isn’t necessarily broken?
Except, it is broken. You are broken, and you know it. Think about how you used to stay up till 3am to land that dream job. Think about how you worked out in the gym every single day to get that body. Now, imagine if you had continued to stoke that fire. Where is that same drive?
We must always remember: comfort is the enemy of ambition.
So then how do you fix it?
I have to give credit where credit is due, so I’ll admit this is actually something my father told me back when I started college (the concise version, if you can believe it):
Imagine you’ve decided to write a book about your life. Anything you write down on the page in front of you will become true.
Are you going to sit there for hours, scared about how blank the page is? Are you going to sit there and not write anything because you’re afraid of how your handwriting will look?
No, you’re going to write down whatever your heart desires. No matter how ridiculous it seems, you’re going to write it down on that page because you know it has the potential to come true.
Go about your life with the same mindset. What would you do if you weren’t afraid? What would you do if you thought you had unlimited potential?
That’s exactly what you should be doing right now. You shouldn’t be afraid of your future because you already have the unlimited potential to get exactly what you desire. If you want something, go out there and get it.
Everything you want can be yours if you aren’t afraid of working for it.

Read More, Read Better
Many of us are looking for more ways to enjoy our time at home in these stressful circumstances. Some of us have turned to books. But how can we make sure we get the most out of them?
