“I know what you mean, it’s just easier to deal with people when you’ve got a buzz going on, especially with how extra they’re being today.” she took another drag from the joint before handing it back to her friend. “You mean like the Hawthorne’s?” she made a face, obviously jealous of their elite lifestyle. “Must be nice not having to worry about anything cause dad’s got it covered,” she mumbled, rolling her eyes. 

The Hawthorne’s lived the kind of life Talia couldn’t help but envy. From her point of view, it seemed like the family had absolutely no cares in the world. Obviously that wasn’t the case, she knew every single person had problems whether they were extravagantly wealthy or not. But when it came to her own issues, Talia knew a lot of them could easily be fixed with more money. She sighed, nodding in agreement. “Imagine waking up without responsibilites or worries? I envy them.”

Dove’s intense anger died down as soon as she saw Talia, a beautiful, friendly face; finally! She walked over towards her friend and sat beside her. “You’re my actual savior, you know that?” she giggled and grabbed the joint from her, taking a nice long drag. “You always come prepared, I should learn from you.” As she let the smoke escape her lips, she laid her head lightly on her friend’s shoulder. “Why does life have to be so expensive, Tal? Why can’t we just walk out of here hand-in-hand and run away to, I don’t know… Cuba.”

“God, I can’t even begin to imagine trying to get through a shift without being at least a little stoned.” she made a face, even the thought bringing a funny feeling to her stomach. Most people underestimated just how rough waitressing could be, especially when most of their customers were overly privileged and unsatisfied with everything. Talia wrapped an arm around Dove and pulled her close, giving her a gentle squeeze. “Maybe in the next life, babe. Here’s hoping we’re reincarnated as incredibly wealthy sisters. Absolutely no cares in the world.”

The restaurant was swamped, as usual. Dove was making her rounds, just trying to make it through the day. Everything was going well up until one of the other waiters collided with her, spilling everything on the tray onto her. Embarrassed, Dove quickly got up onto her feet and dashed toward the kitchen. Once inside, she washed herself up as best as she could by using the sink, but the employees kept telling her she was in the way. Growing even more frustrated, she let out a groan and made her way out the back door and into the ally behind the hotel. After kicking the dumpster a couple of times to let off some steam, she was able to smell a very familiar scent. Looking past the dumpster, she noticed somebody was smoking a joint. “Oh, sorry,” she was frustrated with herself, upset that she let her emotions get the better of her. “I just needed a break,” she explained, hoping they’d understand.

The restaurant being full to the point of it overwhelming her wasn’t anything new. Although Talia didn’t understand the appeal of the overpriced garage they served, but she tried not to judge the people who did. As they were mostly responsible for paying her bills. But today her frustration was practically palpable. After getting completely chewed out by their boss for sneaking a meal to another employee who couldn’t afford lunch, she knew she was on the verge of either a having a breakdown in the middle of the restuarant or walking out and quitting. Unfortunately she needed this job, so neither option was smart. Instead she decided to take a quick break and unwind, knowing the joint would help calm her down, at least to some extent. Talia jumped when she heard Dove’s voice, not expecting to see anyone. “Don’t apologize, babe. Things are crazy in there.” She shook her head and held out the joint to her friend. “You want some? It’ll help.”
