Reminder that PaleyLive: An Evening with the Cast of Person Of Interest is on tomorrow night and is available for streaming!
I believe it started out with just Amy Acker, Michael Emerson, Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman for the event, but apparently Kevin Chapman and Jim Caviezel will be there as well!
More information : An Evening With Person Of Interest
Stream : Watch this panel live at 4:15 PM PT, 6:15 PM CT, 7:15 PM ET.
random observation: rewatching POI eps of yore (because i’m apparently a glutton for punishment -- gah, the feels), couldn’t help but notice that the art that once hung in Carter’s bedroom (3.08) has migrated to the hall outside Iris’ office (first seen in 4.05, later in 4.14 when John decided to re-up his therapy, the lamp joined the party).
Art dept recycling, intentional callback, or are we to just assume everyone in NY has the same butterfly+bird art?

most excellent news!
Actually, I’m pretty good at keeping secrets.
fucking internet has ruined me. first thought was “hoe don’t do it / oh my god”
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to Reprise Their Roles in New X-Files Event Series
Fuck me. I am so done.
Oh yaaaazzzzzzz
kiss kiss. bang bang.
Right, so I will openly admit I was wrong (turns out HATER THEORY #2 was the path we were headed down all along).
I’d like to say I am sad about it. But I’m not.
Not one bit.
Actually, I’m kind’a giddy. (Sorry not sorry!)
I was never actively against them hooking up, even though it wasn’t my first choice by far, but I kind’a thought it was too simple a direction to take... the therapy angle was actually hella more interesting. But, well, no sense mourning what could have been.
Guess I should have heeded the early and VERY. BIG. HINT(S) courtesy of the showrunners on twitter, naming the ship (Riris, still not as much fun to say as iReese) and asking folks which “team” (Team Zoe or Team Iris) they were on, or how the camera lingers lovingly on Wrenn’s face... but alas, I did not, and chose instead to believe the show mightn’t tread so easily into murky ethical waters (also, boring, kind’a standard, ho-hum waters), or at least not dive right into’em.
But here we are, swimming neck deep in it.
They took the time for some perfunctory doing “the right thing” motions (Iris ending their doctor/patient relationship / trying to distance herself after acknowledging that she can’t just will the feelings away).
Legally, they’re in the clear: The American Medical Association clearly states that sexual contact that is concurrent with the doctor/patient relationship constitutes sexual misconduct, but it takes a fuzzier position on relationships that might develop later. (Really, we’re going to harp on the ethics ofthings when John is a fake cop?)
And hey, at least Iris expounded on the elephant in the room beforestepping around it to mack on the guy she’s into. Two consenting adults whomade a mutual decision to go for it. If i wasn’t already so convinced of its eventual painful end (and the likelihood that the change will immediately diminish and marginalize Iris’ role into nothing more than “the girlfriend”), I’d have cheered them on. I will admit, however, to letting out a most unfortunate squee -- a mixture of glee and horror that yup, they went there.
This is by faaaaaar not a show where people ride off into the sunset together to live happily ever after, so for godsake, let them enjoy a little sweetness (not a euphemism!)... ‘cause it’ll all go wrong. Painfully, angstfully wrong. For all the appeal, John’s shortcomings (also not a euphemism!) will eventually bite them both in the ass (not a euph- you get the idea).
Iris, gurrl, that “I’m pretty good at keeping secrets” thing is sexy now, but it’s gonna get really old, really fast... what might have been seen as a challenge for her as a therapist is a death-blow for their burgeoning romance. I know we all worry about John and his vulnerable psyche, but let’s be honest, Iris is the one that’s gonna get her heart broken (if they don’t up and kill her before that happens).
I love the dude, and Iris’ obviously good mental health and psych training might go a long way to understanding/helping smooth a path, but the sad truth is John is not emotionally equipped to be in a successful relationship: Trust? Communication? Um, yeah, no. Shared interests? “Yes sweetheart, I know I said we’d go to the theatre this weekend, but two SAI’s are at war and threatening to burn the world down... can we reschedule?” Dealing with conflict? No time for that, John’s already out the door to save a number.
“...It’s like a cop dating a fireman–” “Okay...” “–it’s that bad...”
Their relationship is doomed to fail (tough enough under the best circumstances, but throw a damaged soul and an ongoing AI-pocalypse into the mix? Doooooomed.). Iris’ own verbalized qualms aside, John will have to continue to lie about who he is, he’ll be forced to maintain his distance to keep her safe... she’ll eventually (since she’s proven herself plenty smart and intuitive) become frustrated and hurt and angry and... Arg. I’m just gonna focus on and try to enjoy the “honeymoon” part of this whole shebang before it veers off into the ditch.
Just please, dear writers (who I love and trust but also fear): Now that poor Iris has been plunged headlong into the “love interest” role (from whence there is no return, and one that will vastly cut short her lifespan and/or screentime), can we not relegate her to being ONLY that. Can they still have, oh, I dunno – real conversations? And for godsake can she please not fall prey/get caught in the crossfire and end up dead (if his cover is blown, or just as someone close to him to use as a pawn), a fresh loss for John. Let’s avoid that whole “kiss of death” clichée, alrighty?
...Alas, if it weren’t for this little distraction, I’d be drowning in Root (I refuse to lose anyone else I care about!) and Harold (I refuse to be the cause of another’s demise!) woes.
“I don’t want to see you for a while.” Seriously, I do sometimes wonder if it’s possible to die from tv-show-induced feels. I’m still suffering from TV-PTSD from IF-THEN-ELSE. I really don’t feel emotionally prepared for the rest of the season.
RANDOM EP MUSINGS:
Fusco’s “Ouch. How many guys?” re:the shiner and John’s nonchalant “Just the one... woman.” reply. Love it.
Fusco’s immediate – and understandable – fondness for the sass and badassery that is Frankie. Ditto, dude.
a most awesome butcher shop action scene.
“I always have a plan” Harper, despite being the one in grave danger, is the one striking the cease-fire bargain. Thank god she’s on our side... kind’a... mostly.
Root quoting Scoobie Doo.
Root expressing feels. Root and how far she’s come. Root. Root!
John fully on board with referring to TM as a “she” (I had to think for a moment to remember who Thornhill was)
poor dear Harold. :(
everyone blaming themselves for Shaw’s death/disappearance.
for a show marketed as/fronted by two white dudes, they sure do a masterful job of surrounding them with a plethora of ballsy, badass (and beautiful – it’s tv after all) women who prove just as strong and capable and complicated as their male counterparts.
good. grief.
Grief is a huge overlying theme on PoI. Forget layers of an onion, we’re talking about an onion wrapped in bigger onions wrapped in a fuckin’ turducken in terms of complexity.
So I’m going to disregard all the heavier shit and focus on something more easily digested...
Full disclosure? I’m in the pro-Iris camp, full stop. I get downright giddy when I see Wrenn Schmidt’s name float up onscreen, or listed in an upcoming ep synopsis.
I don’t expect everyone to agree. We all have our favourites, like what we like and vice versa. I once – one time! – made the mistake of checking the comments section of the PoI FB page... only to find calls to “bring back the PoI of yore! Get rid of the pesky womenfolk!” manywho believed “The AI-war is boring!” and “Root and Shaw are just gal-pals!”... I’lladmit, I was shocked by the negativity, narrowmindedness and generaldouchery... it felt like “they” were watching a wholly different show than Iwas. Thankfully opinions varied on other forums.
A substantial part of the PoI fandom seems happy to marginalize Dr.Iris Campbell under the “love interest” umbrella (further discounting her as “unprofessional”/”untrustworthy” or more eloquently as “icky” and “squicky” for no discernable transgressions), or mark her as a future villain.
It’s as though the *only* possible explanation for her introduction and further existence is either a) she’s a threat, or b) she is there for John to fuck. Because god knows Person of Interest has never shown itself capable of nuanced human relationships and interaction, right?
And though I’m likely talking to myself, I still feel some strange duty to counterbalance the anti-Iris sentiment and publicly defend (because there seems to be very little of that) the good Doc (to the 3 people likely to skim this). Let’s discuss.
FAVE HATER THEORY #1: SHE’S EVIL.
Now, since this is PoI and we are all by default paranoid: I don’t take anything at face value, I did do some minor risk assessment – listening for musical hints, watching for visual cues (I wish I’d been so clued in during Season 1, then Root’s reveal wouldn’t have come as such a delicious shock... TM POV label was yellow the whole time, warning the viewer to her knowledge of The Machine). Nothing nefarious to my eyes and ears.
BROTHERHOOD: Dominic has expressed interest in learning more about Detective John Riley, but I’m not sure a therapist’s notes would be his go-to. And given that his last “insider” was a recruit tasked to steal files, I doubt he has the clout to pressure IA to order a review, and then leverage ANY department shrink into breaking doctor/patient confidentiality on the offchance they might glean a tidbit of backstory (backstory which she hasn’t pushed for – she always pushes him on feelings, not time and place). Aside: I’m still shocked it took 6 shootings for him to get sent to the shrink’s office/come under review.
SAMARITAN: Straight-up, I think it’s ludicrous to think she could be a Samaritan plant. As far as we know, John’s cover is still intact, and from what we’ve learned of the program, killing and/or abducting and torturing-for-information is hella more likely-to-yield-results than observing the occasional head-shrinking where “fweelings” are discussed.
Honestly, I’m not sure how peeps figure learning the details of John’s improving mental health and how he deals (or doesn’t) with grief will win or impact either war (stopping his sessions and letting him spiral out of control might though!).
...What is suspicious? The shifty-as-fuck furniture.
FAVE HATER THEORY #2: LOVE INTEREST
Add an attractive actress (esp. as a recurring character) and this automatically applies. The woman’s role is immediately relegated to that of a sexual object to be coveted and pursued.
Yes, Iris is beautiful, but she’s also proved herself exceedingly intelligent and intuitive with an extremely high EQ. Um, perhaps she’s a psychologist who takes her chosen profession seriously? Who, after years of study and experience thinks she might be able to help this obviously-damaged and hurting patient find a little peace?
Nah, that certainly can’t be it. She must be lookin’ to land herself a man.
*le sigh*
John needs therapy a helluvalot more than he needs to get laid.
As previously mentioned I’m not wholly against it and trust the writers to tread carefully should they choose to veer into romantic territory (but the show has never been about -- or kind to -- romantic pairings, so I highly doubt we have much to worry about).
Thusfar we’ve have only seen the faintest... erm okay, it was blatant viewer titillation — but technically the aborted hug/handshake could just as easily be interpreted as Awkward!John being awkward (and if Iris was played by an older, portly actress, no one would have blinked an eye... and last I checked a hug≠sex, and couldn’t get you pregnant). I’m happy that the writers are taking John’s therapy sessions seriously and haven’t reduced them to an excuse for him to get close and get into her pants (does she own pants? Has she ever worn pants?), even if there is some hint at mutual attraction (fuck, they’re human, aren’t they?).
I will admit, I too rolled my eyes at the clichéd convenience (a lazy writer’s trick to get from point A-B in the simplest way possible) of Iris having access to gala tix, John somehow knowing this and taking advantage. She might have come in on his arm, but it wasn’t a date, and attending the event together was neither unprofessional nor romantic (even without the addition of cumberbun-sporting third-wheel Lionel). John needed into the gala, and I think she saw it as an opportunity to observe a rather difficult patient in a different setting.
[Kind’a feel like there was a missed opportunity more than a little side-eye and/or full-on WTF? expressions from Iris as John goes about his regular “in the field” activities. She’s smart and tuned-in enough to John to notice when he’s whispering to invisible partners, or to be more than a bit worried when he leaps to his feet in advance of a yet-to-be-revealed threat (last time there was automatic weapons fire on the street)... but she doesn’t say a word. Alas, I guess we need to suspend reality just that little bit: Seems no one ever eavesdrops and it’s rare anyone even seems to notice (or be thrown off) by Team Machine apparently talking to themselves -- delivering the explanations and updates we need as viewers.]
From my perspective, leveraging the gala tickets later wasn’t an unprofessional, big fat “you owe me!” manipulation, but rather someone making use of the tools she had at hand in an attempt to nudge a patient she could feel retreating, regressing.
One step forward, two steps back?
Speaking of steps back, a large percentage of those expressing anti-Iris sentiment also seem hell-bent on pitting her against Zoe, like it’s an either-or: Two women enter, only one can live!
Zoe is essentially John with big hair. Don’t get me wrong, I love Zoe and her chemistry with John (and the rest of the team): she’s tremendously confident, ballsy and brash, smart and beautiful... I expect the sex would be great, but sadly devoid of any meaningful connection. Emotionally, she’s just as stunted as John is (though perhaps not as broken); something she seems conscious of per her “people like us” speech in 4.14 Guilty, but she sees no downside to it and no need to improve it... which is where their paths part ways.
John might not be the most self-aware dude, but I think he’s reached a point where he realizes he’s coming apart at the seams and can’t continue as he has, that he needs to learn new coping strategies... that he needs to deal (grieve, baby!) in order to move on, and more importantly, stay sane.
And yeah, maybe that’s where Iris is a threat... Emotional intimacy – far more terrifying than anything Samaritan or the Brotherhood have to offer.
That fuckin’ head-tilt/open-expression/leading-question-followed-by-silence thing Iris does? Deadly. I always interpreted John’s “You know what? You can tell IA whatever the hell you want!” sudden outburst and move to stalk out (4.05 Prophets) as a reaction to feeling the lure of her offer to help. It was a retreat, not a challenge. Here was someone who saw right through his bullshit, offering to help heal and unburden him... He wanted to take her up on it, despite feeling exposed and vulnerable, and I think that scared him more than any baddie with a gun.
[I would love to read the scripts/sides and find out what the writers fully intended, versus what we each interpret from the final filmed scenes and their subtle nuances... I will settle for DVD episode commentary!]
He’s drawn back to the safety of their sessions, even after she clears him. He keeps coming back, even though he is bad at therapy, bad at using his words (or making words, let’s be honest), but he shows up and tries in his very own John way, and she reciprocates. She’s trying to help him, even as he hesitates and evades and gets in his own way.
Arg, so why again should I dislike this woman?
I’m not sure what the endgame is for Iris... whether she’ll just quietly disappear as “the fight” comes back to the fore (or fall prey to/become a pawn in the fight... would really love it if she doesn’t fall down the “damsel in distress” hole and become a new source of angst, and think the writers are more creative than that.). Either way, therapy will eventually end, with a bang or a whimper – A happy and whole, emotionally sound John does not fit into the PoI universe, grief and the pursuit of justice will always be the driving force. I guess the hope is that his fraying psychological wounds get stitched up and heal just enough to hold him together for the fight ahead.
RANDOM EP MUSINGS:
Michael Emerson is a gift. Vengeance!Finch scares the everloving shit out of me.
Root: I miss her, but I’m not terribly concerned that we didn’t see her this episode. Somehow her presence is always felt, like there’s a “Root!Adventures” spinoff taking place just off camera (btw, I’d totally watch that!). I’m glad that the writers don’t just throw her into scenes simply because we all love Amy so much. When she shows up, it’s with purpose and impact. She brings a dark edginess and an energy that chews up scenes – I am anticipating (and dreading, oh the feels) her return and the re-ramping-up of the mythology heading into the finale. That said, I am thankful for “downtime” non-mytharc episodes like this, that allow us to take a breath. Bit’o character development, maybe the odd hint or two for what’s to come, but none of the adrenal-gland burning, heart-breaking, mind-blowing events we’ve come to expect from the series (but that cannot be maintained over an entire season).
Fusco: “nutball friends” / “give Red my regards” / Third-wheel-in-a-cumberbun!Fusco working his distraction mojo (“So, Doc, I’ve been having this dream...”)? The man is comedic gold, but I’m glad we’re still occasionally gifted with glimpses of his darker nature and proclivity for an-eye-for-an-eye.
Hector the pibble? Super bloody cute. Glad to see Bear get some love this ep too.
Sad to report I was a sucker and totally fell for the tease at the end. I was content and in agreement/at peace with Finch’s rationale, and then TM picked up and started to spool back to 2007 and I was all “oooh, we *are* gonna get some closure--DAMMIT!!!”
I’m just sitting here and laughing at this gif because… wow. It’s their entire relationship in one gif is2g
doctor+detective drabble
This past week’s “throwback to POI of old” ep (4.14 "Guilty") forced me to acknowledge some long-ignored John feels (I’m usually too preoccupied by devastating Root feels). Team Machine is one big fucked-up, dysfunctional family – walking in darkness, bound together by their cause. John’s the steady-eddie of the group (apart from several short but well-deserved vengeful rampage vacays), arguably the least developed character – post-Pilot he is and has always been what we need him to be (for Finch, for the team): “The Man in the Suit”. Strong, steady, contained, and loyal to a fault.
John Reese compartmentalizes, buries his feelings away, bears the weight of grief and sacrifice in silence because he refuses to burden others by sharing... But he’s been wearing at the seams for some time now, and part of him recognizes that he can’t continue this way if he expects to remain of use to anyone. He needs an outlet.
Enter Dr. (“head variety”) Iris Campbell.
She’s radically different from the deeply private, damaged, emotionally stunted (god how we love them though) human beings who populate the POI universe, “playing at” being normal. There is a softness about her, an intuitive warmth andkindness -- but she’s not a pushover, naïve or easily fooled.
Tasked to judge John’s fitness for duty, she never comes across as judgmental: Her questions are straightforward; Her mild reproach is one of disappointment when John attempts to manipulate her instead of accepting the help on offer; She calls him out on his bullshit (and his skipped appointments) and stands her ground when he tries desperately to dodge her.
She allows for silence, for reflection. She presses but doesn’t push. She listens.
She teases John, obviously not offended or put off by his gruffness, eventually cajoling him into revealing more of himself, into showing some vulnerability and trust. Iris Campbell looks to be an excellent therapist and might prove to be an even better confidant, and dare I say, friend.
[...though having typed all that, I must admit I also immediately liked and trusted head-shrinker Caroline Turing, and we all know how that turned out (um, it turned out AWESOME! Though not for John, at least at the start, and part of me hopes there isn’t some nefarious twist to Iris, that she remains a much-needed source of normalcy and comfort... and fuck, with this show, someone being who they claim to be *is* a bloody twist).]
I for one am all for the occasional smattering of sunshine by way of a secondary character, one that could shed light on new facets of characters we love... and John has certainly earned the right to some reprieve.
Besides, who doesn’t like freckles?
So even if the writers (who have oft surprised but never disappointed me) want to tread into ethically-murky water and throw in a little angsty that-which-cannot-be romance? I’m in. Awkward!John in response to some flirting? Bring it. We’re going to need a little levity to fill the gaping hole left in Shaw’s absence (no more innuendo-laden, flirty!Root.--*sob* their interactions had become my lifeblood).
Plus, I dunno man, the furniture clearly ships it...
“Please, have a seat [in one of my appropriately-spaced chairs].”
Chairs: “Oh, this simply will not do.”
Slowly creep closer together before each session.
Aborted handshake/hug. Chairs: (titillated giggles)
Creep even closer.
Chairs: “Soon...”
Extra: the chairs’ zany friends, Indicisive!Lamp and Side-Table!Sidekick... just can’t pick a side.
Jeebus, I need a new ep stat. Filling these waits with nonsensical musings just won’t do.
