Beak and Brain: Genius Birds From Down Under
just watched this documentary on netflix and it was awesome!! it focuses on the Kea and Crows and how smart and clever they are. totally recommend. If there is anything us parrot owners know its that bird are smart creatures and its so neat to see it documented with the wild birds.
Me: look at my beautiful bird! I love her and she helped me recover from depression!
Someone, inevitably: but doesn't it...poop?

Need some advice
So my hubby and I are expecting our first baby this August and we are thinking about putting some finches in the babies room, do you think this would be OK for the baby? We think it would be good to have something natural around that baby that would be soothing with its little noises and such… Any opinions??
I really don’t recommend people keep birds in anyone’s bedroom – and especially not baby’s, with developing lungs.
Finches are not powder down birds, but they still produce dander (”bird dust”) from the breakdown of their feathers, which contains proteins that people can become sensitized to to the point of serious disease, like hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
Here is a post I have on powder down and safety.
As mentioned, finches don’t produce as much dust as birds like doves, cockatoos/tiels, Mealy Amazons, or African greys. However, even small amounts of bird dust can be irritating and dangerous for sensitive people.
Another aspect is that birds are loud – even finches can be pretty loud – in the morning and evening (including at dawn and dusk) which could interfere with a baby’s sleep. They’re pretty quiet during the night, but conversely, birds need uninterrupted sleep, which they may not get with a baby that doesn’t sleep through the night. If startled in the dark, birds can hurt themselves hitting the sides of their enclosure.
I do not think having finches in general would be dangerous or bad! If you had some near a play area, that would be wonderful, and probably very fun and stimulating for a baby to watch. Just be sure they are cleaned daily, and have a HEPA filter set up in both the baby’s bedroom and near the cage.
Thank you! Awesome advice. I was having the hardest time searching this because any time I did it would just go to baby finches... I would definitely like to get some even if they aren't in the babies room. Thank you :)

Clearly Leo has fallen in love "let me love you"
Got little Leo a companion since he seems lonely lately, we haven’t settled on a name yet and we are open to suggestions for this little girl
Do me a favor? If you’re strictly a bird blog, (as in you only post bird related content, be it parrots, wild, companion, birds of prey, or any kind of avian) please reblog this and I’ll check your blog out and maybe follow. I could always use more birds on my dash.
