The heat in Marella's hand swelled to a point. The fire erupted in her palm, and she whipped her hand around to sling the ball of heat towards her practice target.
The hay dummy burst into flames. Tam whistled, stepping aside to study the charred dummy. "So. That was our last dummy. I think that's our cue to take a break."
"My bad," Marella dropped down under the shade of the tree. "We'll have to use something less flammable next time."
"It'll be alright." Tam joined beside her. "We can just paint a target on a rock or something."
Marella rested her head against Tam's shoulder. His skin was cool. She didn't know whether it was him being a shade or her being a pyrokinetic, but it felt nice.
She caught the glimpse of a black blur on the ground. She focused over to the left where a silhouette of a bird was flying across the ground. Marella looked up, but the sky was clear. No animals in sight.
Back on the ground, the bird was gone. Instead, it was replaced with a tiger. A tiger?
She glanced to Tam. Just now noticing the tiger prowling across the grass along with the flick of Tam's wrist.
"You make shadow puppets?" She raised her eyebrow.
Oh wow. She wanted to make fun of him. But it was so lame it was almost cute. Didn't mean she couldn't give him a hard time.
"Yeah. What about it?" Tam asked.
Marella sparked a flame, smothering out the shadow on the ground. "It's lame!" She couldn't quite hide her grin.
Tam, in turn, pooled the shadows around them together into a ball of black void.
She hesitantly reached out and dipped her hand in the cold ink. It sent chills down her spine. The spinning abyss was almost mesmerizing.
Tam studied her. He reached out and toyed with her ponytail. They locked eyes, and he was smiling.
He let the shadows go, and they slunked back to their cracks and crevices. Marella situated herself closer, focusing on the swirling shadows. Tam threw his arm around her.
Marella glanced up. "Do you want to know what I heard today?"
Tam raised an eyebrow. "You act like that's a question."
