p. 19: Why Navidson?
The first theme that comes up in this chapter is that of fate, expressed through a number of different quotations.
First, the chapter heading, a quote from Dorothea Lange:
It is no accident that the photographer becomes a photographer any more than the lion tamer becomes a lion tamer.
Fun facts about Dorothea Lange: she was a photographer during the Great Depression, as well as working later on to show the truth of Japanese internment camps in the United States through her photojournalism. She’s the photographer who took the famous photo of a migrant woman and her children.
This quote definitely plays to the “everything is fated to happen the way it does” side, as well as emphasizing the importance of Will Navidson’s career as a photographer.
Next up: a quote from the bible.
But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharoah and free the Israelites from Egypt?’
This one’s interesting, because it suggests a sort of quest, wherein a reluctant hero is appointed a great task. It also relates to the idea of freeing something or someone: could Navidson and his family’s presence in the house have acted to free it in some way?
It’s possible to draw parallels here between each Navidson, Zampanò, and Johnny with Moses. Basically, the one communicating information is responsible for “freeing” it, and each of these people had a hand in that at some stage or other. This can indeed be a great burden, and it seems that Johnny in particular, as Moses did, questions why it was he that ended up doing it.
And finally, another quote from Dante’s Inferno:
Ma io perchè venirvi? o chi 'l concede?/Io non Enëa, io non Paulo sono.
(translation: “But I, why should I go there, and who grants it?/I am not Aeneas, I am not Paul.”)
This quote deals more with identity, and again references a journey or quest of some kind. Johnny himself admits to asking himself “not the Aeneas/Paul part,” which leaves “…why should I go there, and who grants it?” Johnny’s going “there” is much more a psychological journey than a physical one, as he goes deeper Zampanò’s writings. It also sets up Johnny in parallel with Navidson; as Navidson goes into the house, so Johnny goes into Zampanò’s writing.
Enëa, or Aeneas, is a Trojan hero. In the Iliad, the gods save him from death twice because he’s important to them. He’s one of those people who’s just ~chosen~.
I’m assuming Paul refers to the Apostle of Christ. This guy spent a lot of his time going round converting people and spreading the word of Jesus, and is generally considered one of the most important figures in the establishment of Christianity. He was converted in a really dramatic way: he was walking along a road and saw a great light that blinded him. Totally unplanned on his part. Let’s not ignore the fact that his role was essentially someone who believed something that a lot of people considered kind of crazy and his most important task was disseminating information about it, quite similarly to both Zampanò and Johnny (footnote on p.20: “To date, I’ve counted over two hundred rejection letters from various literary journals, publishing houses…”)
Johnny is, in some ways, an apostle. He’s given up–in a dubcon sort of way– his life outside of Zampanò’s Word, and is making his best efforts to interpret and disseminate this information. Then, Zampanò is pretty much doing the same for The Navidson Record.

❛ It may be the wrong decision, but fuck it, it’s mine. ❜
❛ Like patience, passion comes from the same Latin root: pati. It does not mean to flow with exuberance. It means to suffer. ❜
❛ No one ever really gets used to nightmares. ❜
❛ I still get nightmares. In fact, I get them so often I should be used to them by now. I’m not. ❜
❛ Sublime is something you choke on after a shot of tequila. ❜
❛ Some people reflect light, some deflect it, you by some miracle, seem to collect it. ❜
❛ Beautiful women are always drawn to men they think will keep them beautiful. ❜
❛ The ruminations are mine, let the world be yours. ❜
❛ You will fulfil a promise I made years ago but failed to keep. ❜
❛ Darkness never satisfies. Especially if it takes something away which it almost always invariably does. ❜
❛ I want something else. I’m not even sure what to call it anymore. ❜
❛ What can I say, I’m a sucker for abandoned stuff, misplaced stuff, forgotten stuff, any old stuff. ❜
❛ Is it possible to love something so much, you imagine it wants to destroy you only because it has denied you? ❜
❛ It’s just silent, no sound at all. It’s like something’s waiting. ❜
❛ I guess I’m hoping the weapons will make me feel better, grant me some kind of fucking control. ❜
❛ Oh and something else: – Fuck you. ❜
❛ God I’ve never been afraid like this. ❜
❛ I miss you. I love you. There’s no second I’ve lived that you can’t call your own. ❜
❛ I’m so tired. Sleep’s been stalking me for too long to remember. Inevitable I suppose. ❜
❛ Not seeing the rip doesn’t mean you automatically get to keep clear of the Hey-I’m-Bleeding part. ❜
❛ These days fantasies flourish and die like summer flies. ❜
❛ Yeah I know, I know. This shit’s getting ridiculous. ❜
❛ ‘Fuck’ and ‘fall for’ have very different meanings. The first one you do as much as you can. The second one you never ever, ever do. ❜
❛ It’s a nice idea but it reeks of hope. False hope. ❜
❛ It’s, well…one thing in two words: fucked up…very fucked up. Okay three words, four words, who the hell cares…very very fucked up. ❜
❛ Do you think I could spend the night at your place? ❜
❛ Any fool can pray. ❜
❛ I feel like I haven’t slept in months. My neighbours are scared of me. ❜
❛ I’ve lost my mind? Maybe, maybe, maybe. Maybe I’m just really drunk. ❜
❛ Perhaps by cleaning out my system I’ll come to a clearing where I can ease myself into peace. ❜
❛ I should be dead. Why am I still here? ❜
❛ Fuck if I know. Your guess is as good as mine. ❜
❛ You are my flesh. You are my bones. I know you too well. I read you too perfectly. ❜
❛ Not all complex problems have easy solutions. ❜
❛ Do you believe in God? I don’t think I ever asked you that one. ❜
❛ We all create stories to protect ourselves. ❜
❛ Are you kidding me? This place is scary. ❜
❛ These days the only thing that gets me outside is when I say: Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck you. Fuck me. Fuck this. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. ❜
❛ You like that crap because it reminds you of you. ❜
❛ You may suddenly realise things are not how you perceived them to be at all. ❜
