Beyond Place Final Poster Version (2016)

Instead of using a book to tell our story, my partner and I have decided to use a poster format to talk about a story of coming of age, choice, and a small history of a large part of the Weston-Super Mare pier.

Using the references of Christopher Weir, we tried out using a similar technique of the same picture with zooming in of different parts of the image, creating a comic effect.

Resin painting failed attempts

It’s the night before submission date and I’d like to write an entry about my attempts at resin painting.

So when I went to bower ashton to talk to fabrication about what materials I’ll be needing for resin painting. He told me to get the resin in the art shop and the paint I should use would be oil paint.

Being an erasmus student, we’re always trying to spend as little money as possible on buying material things, just because we’re unable to take them back home. So I bought this cheap set of oil paints I’d be fine with throwing away when I leave.

From previous experience with oil paints, I did know that they usually take a week to dry completely, but since talking to Paul, I thought it would be alright to use it directly on the resin and that the next layer would not affect the painting. Boy, were the both of us wrong to my utter despair and disappointment.

The left side was my first attempt, when I wasn’t very sure how to manage the resin yet, ending up with a very uneven surface and wanting to do a good job I want to start over. So I did... with second attempt, I could control the resin better, but after dumping the second layer. The resin destroyed my painting. By now I know I’m not going to finish the project just because resin and oil paints take forever to dry.

I’m just going to have to face the music tomorrow and show what I have. I’m guessing acrylics were the paint that I was suppose to use and I was given the wrong advice. Hopefully I will attempt resin painting again, despite knowing I’ll have to buy another set of paints that I will have to throw away when I leave.

Fishing Industry: What’s the Story

Packaging Update

Because the ceramic bowl I chose for my resin painting, I decided to go for a heavier packaging to be able to hold the weight of the bowl. The box is inspired by a luxury packaging I’ve seen before once at an airport. The cover is harder while the inside box is around 150g.

As for the words and logo in the front, I will be handpainting it on with gold paint.

So far so good with the box and packaging part.

Fishing Industry: What’s the Story

After another tutorial with Jez, he’d suggested for the packaging, instead of being a fish product packaging but have something preserved in resin and complete a packaging for that.

In consideration of this idea, I was not very thrilled with bring a whole piece of salmon to Bower Ashton to be molded into resin, but I looked at an alternative to having an actual fish.

Riusuke Fukahori is a Japanese goldfish artist who creates a magnificent display of a fish seemingly frozen and preserved in resin. His drawings are so realistic and his technique is something worth attempting (even if not as well imitated).

With much patience and detail, he slowly draws in the goldfish layer by layer onto resin, waiting for it to harden before doing another layer until a goldfish seems to be floating, forever frozen in that position.

At the fish market I was looking at how the salmon was displayed on sale (in styrofoam boxes, on ice, laying there with it’s belly already cut, blood slightly staining the ice chunks and box, and ready to be sliced and cooked).

I would like to paint this scene in Fukahori’s technique and preserve the moment the fish is still in it’s form but on it’s deathbed of ice.

Going shopping, I found square plastic boxes, but afraid the plastic boxes might be too fragile, I found this beautifully curved ceramic bowl to paint in.

The resin and paint has been purchased and ready to get working on!

Fishing Industry: What’s the Story

As research, I went to London’s Billingsgate Fish Market to see if I could get more information about the local fishing industry. Online, I have already done plenty of research on the Norwegian salmon farming industry and companies such as Leroy Salmon and its popular product Aurora Salmon.

I arrived at Canary Wharf at around 6:00. The usually busy business area was still quiet at this time in the morning.

It took some time but I finally found the entrance of the fish market. I saw a lot of restaurant and business owners coming with their coworkers and chefs to buy the catch of the day while it was still fresh, carrying their seafood main dishes in black trash bags trying to get home as quick as possible to get them frozen up so they’re fresh for today’s customers.

Amazing market. Reminded me a lot of Tsukiji fish market in Japan, but here it was less cluttered. Talking to one of the sellers, he said he was just a seller and suggested I go upstairs and talk to one of the people from the fish training school.

The people there were very nice of the administration, giving me a lot of brochures and suggestions about where I can learn even more about the local fishing industry.

All these people had to get up this early. It really is a tough job, so the cafe gets a lot of business selling coffee and breakfast to the buyers and the traders.

Fishing Industry: What’s the Story Rationale

The final brief of Graphic Design Image and Narrative Course.

Rationale:

Many people are very focused on the meat, poultry, and farming industry but everything under the sea level is more of a mystery. Using this project I would like to make light of this idea by get a new perspective on the truth of the fishing industry. Talking to real fisherman to understand their stories and the future observe the industry’s transition towards sustainable fish farming. Leroy’s Aurora Salmon is currently the most demanded, high-quality salmon brand around. The company should be acknowledged for its attempts in providing with environmental friendly methods and should be an example of what we strive for the future.

Given 24 hours to compete this design I came up with the concept of spreading good will. The envelope is sending the positive wishes while the letter explains this assignment/experiment as well as the instructions while in possession of the letter.

With the envelope and letter finished, it was nice to take it to the streets. While taking pictures around the pier, I noticed a women with her baby. Approaching her with a smile as I wished her positive vibes through my letter and explaining the experiment.

With that the letter was exchanged.

Hopefully the letter will return, but if it doesn’t, I’m still glad to have released something that had a positive message to share.

Image and Narrative: Group Zine Task

The poem “The Wanderer” was a good poem to work with as we collaged the a cactus’s journey to areas where you can dream of traveling. Even the most unlikely is possible as long as you continue on.

The concept of the images are highly dependent on repetition and texture, the use of color also bringing a different feeling to each turn of a page.
