Chapter 1, Part 1
Z leans over the edge of the rooftop that looks over the glimmering city in the distance. It’s almost bright enough to dim the stars, but they refuse to be hidden. Firelord Tolrick lives in the central part of the city, surrounded by the upperclass citizens.
[Z] Hey, dude, you ready? I know I am. I don’t know what we’re gonna steal but we’re gonna steal something. I bet even the dust is valuable in there. He’s so busy with the Choosing, I bet he’ll never notice us, yeah?
They stood up and put a foot out to hop down the path they made down the rooftop, before a voice quivered behind them.
[PAZ] I dunno. Wouldn’t the Choosing just make the palace have tighter security? I’m usually all for your plans, but... Z, this one is just too risky.
Z paused for a moment, trying to find a way to get Paz to come with them. Normally, people would just kick aside an orphan like Paz with only one seeing eye, but Z had use for him. Usually as a distraction or a scapegoat, but still, a use.
[Z] What if your parents are down there, huh? We’ve never been that far into the city. Who knows, they could be looking for you right now! What, do you want to abandon them?
He fidgeted a little uncomfortably, because anything Z said, he believed was true. That’s what Z loved about Paz. It was at this point he reluctantly agreed, and they hopped down the roof together.
