Coachella: Moby, Animals and Contradictions
Or should I say: Couchella? I watched several acts from the comfort of my couch in the pleasantly cool environment of my living room, with a glass of beer and a vegan pizza that didn't cost me a month's salary. :)
Of course, it's not comparable to the live feeling of a festival, but at least no lifeless-looking audience member was shoving their smartphone in my face.
But I hardly saw any smartphones in Moby's audience, and I have to clarify one thing: the audience wasn't quite that 'dead'. At least not Moby's audience. I actually saw people who seemed to be having fun. In any case, I enjoyed Moby's Couchella performance (well, actually...).
My highlight was 'Natural Blues' featuring Jacob Lusk. What a voice!
By the way:

A noble gesture from Moby, who is well known for his love of animals and his animal rights activism, and I hope he also received a salary of $10.000.000 for his Coachella performances (which I honestly find hard to believe, but in my opinion, he deserved it).
I actually wanted to ignore Coachella ever since I read that this festival apparently takes place on the land of someone I don't want to support, and I certainly don't want to support the people and things he supports.

Coachella celebrates diversity – its owner funds the opposite (article in German)

Therefore, it is indeed a contradiction to celebrate diversity at the Coachella Festival and protest against ICE. I can imagine that many attendees or even performing artists aren't even aware of what they're actually supporting. Perhaps some of them simply don't care.
I watched a few performances this year, but to be honest: i felt a bit 'guilty' and actually I didn't feel quite so comfortable on my couch.
Edit: misspelling 🫣
Linkin Park: 'Robot Boy'
I don't even know why this song keeps getting stuck in my head.
The song deals with a speaker feeling effectively emotionless because of the way people have treated them. The song ends with an anthem of consolation, to hold on.

That's the meaning in a nutshell (at least according to Genius.com). But I think there's another reason. I'm still thinking about it...
Coachella 2.0
This is the result of a vacation at home and extreme boredom due to extremely bad weather. :)
I don't want to put anyone off Coachella, and especially not Taemin's performance there. But I do have my personal reservations about huge festivals of this kind (including this influencer thing). This is just my personal opinion, which in many aspects agrees with the opinion of the author of the article I linked to in my previous blog post. And this article is just an opinion, too.
Of course, it's difficult for me to form an opinion when I've never personally attended this festival. So I'll call it an 'assessment'.
I consider Coachella a festival where the interest in music takes a bit of a back seat (except for the really big acts). It's not just about music, but also about art, as the name 'Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival' suggests. And Fashion and influencing people. For me festivals of this size, with such a variety of so many different music acts, is a bit 'too much.'
For me, 'less is often more.' Such a large-scale event naturally comes at a price, which is evidently reflected in the exorbitant ticket prices. Can the 'average earner' even afford something like this? Or is it only intended for a certain, privileged audience? People who get sponsored to go to Coachella?
Aside from that: I read that some Taemin fans/Shawols from Korea will be traveling to Coachella to support him.
For Taemin, he will rock it! (I really hope he can rest a bit and that he's in good health!) Coachella will certainly be an opportunity to make him (even) more famous outside of the K-pop community. I'm convinced he'll find new fans. But overall, I don't think his style of music necessarily appeals to the masses (although for me personally, that's a good thing), as he often strikes a somewhat dark tone in his music and lyrics and performances, and that's not everyone's cup of tea, in my opinion. And Taemin sings predominantly in Korean, which isn't to everyone's taste either. If Taemin ever achieves such tremendous success in the US, I sincerely hope no one expects him or what he's doing to change in any way. So, better not even try. :D ;)
Of course, with the large number of different artists from different genres, you can't (or don't want to) support all of them equally. But when I watch an act at a festival, there's always one thing that I think should be maintained, even if I don't know the artist or don't like them that much: respect for the artist(s) on stage, who are doing their best to entertain people. Otherwise, leaving is always a good option for me.
Please support the artists by showing lots of enthusiasm, especially for Taemin. He's such a unique and versatile artist, imo. And a nice, humble person.
I'd actually be interested in some acts of the 2026 lineup, but the US would not be an option for me at the moment, unfortunately.
Justin Bieber and Sabrina Carpenter - nope :), I'm more interested in alternative, indie, and electronic acts. Artists/bands that are particularly interesting to me:
- Of course, Taemin: he'll rock that thing, I'm sure of it! I just hope there won't be any technical or sound issues; I don't think Taemin likes that :))
- Moby: I've loved this man for a long time. Not just for his music, but also for his animal rights activism. Let's go vegan, everyone! :D ;) Anyway, I went there.
- Nine Inch Noize: I don't think I need to say much about this act :)
- Röyksopp, an electronic duo from Norway that I really admire. -
FKA Twigs: British musician, singer, actress, and dancer whose music oscillates between pop, R&B, electronic music, and hyperpop. A very interesting artist, in my opinion.
- Other artists I'm also interested in are Foster The People, The Strokes, Likke Li, Teddy Swims, Iggy Pop, and Katseye. I don't know any of the other artists or don't know them very well.
I would definitely watch Big Bang too, but I'm not a huge fan, although I do like some of their songs. I also liked some of G-Dragon's solo songs, but somehow he's recently lost my sympathy. I think I'll write a separate blog post about that, because there's something about G-Dragon that's really bothering me. Just to say: I have nothing against G-Dragon, I just have reservations about a few things he's done, or rather, used. This has already been discussed, but I think I'd like to add my two cents. :)
By the way: I don't understand why so many people apparently 'hate' Benson Boone. Incidentally, I only thought about the lyrics of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' after posting the song. I was just talking about that Coachella performance (I admit, BR is a very complex piece of music, and maybe the audience there were just standing there thunderstruck out of sheer awe of that performance and of Brian May :D). But I think a lot of people actually didn't know who Brian May was. Maybe they shouldn't just wear the hippie-like fashion of the past (because all that has been done before, including the hairstyles), but maybe also listen to a few songs or bands from the 70s or even the 80s.
Everyone can interpret the song however they want. Incidentally, that's what Freddy Mercury, who wrote and composed this song, said about Bohemian Rhapsody.
"People should listen to the song and form their own opinion based on what the lyrics tell them." Source quote: Andy Davis, Record Collector 167, 1993, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody
So, please form your own opinion and don't listen so much to the opinions given to you by influencers. :)
In my opinion, this whole 'influencer' thing is almost all about hype. Just as quickly as it's created, it's gone again, and on to the next hype. That's not my thing, i guess i'm too old-school (no, not old! :)).
And here's another example of Bohemian Rhapsody, this time with an interested audience, because they're only there for one band, for THE Queen, and not what feels like 1,564 different artists.
I sometimes feel kind of a 'homesickness' for these kinds of concerts when watching them. The atmosphere, the enthusiasm of the audience, even though I've not been there. :) And no smartphones. :D
For anyone who can afford to go to Coachella 2026: just have fun everyone and don't worry so much about clothes and the perfect bohemian-chic haircut. :) And put away your smartphones. :D
In times like these, I think it's good to take every opportunity to have fun.
Wow, i was really bored. :D
Coachella: "Just here to be seen."?
Taemin at Coachella 2026??? Is this the "We're just here to be seen" festival with the "comatose audience"?
I'm excited about this news. But ... I really hope for Taemin's sake that the audience will do him justice. That they MOVE and dance to his songs and cheer him on. Will there be people who know the Korean lyrics to sing along or doing some Fan chants? Or will they just stand there, completely motionless and emotionless, holding their smartphone cameras in the air, guessing who this "Korean guy" is? :D ;)
Coachella: one of the biggest festivals in the world. And known for sound problems, poor sound quality, a 'dead audience', and exorbitant prices. I read Tickets are $649 for the first weekend and $599 for the second ... Wow!
''Given the rapidly rising costs, Coachella's appeal increasingly relies on overprivileged, moneyed elites seeking rites of passage and little interest in music.''
Source: www.musicradar.com
I haven't been there myself (I live too far away), but I've heard, seen, and read a lot about Coachella. The performance by Benson Boone and Brian May was legendary, in my opinion, but the audience apparently had no idea what to do with it.
Such a shame.
I hope for the best for Taemin. And I hope I'm not being too pessimistic.

He looks stunning.
Jealousy
Sometimes I'm a little jealous of people who don't have to worry about anything other than a supposed nose job. That's supposedly nothing unusual, especially in South Korea. I even had a nose job myself because I had breathing problems and snored excessively (my boyfriend always said I was responsible for forest dieback because I cut down the forests around us every night :D).
What if Taemin can't breathe well? A slight lift of the tip of his nose can really make a difference.
A drooping nasal tip can narrow the nasal passages and cause breathing difficulties, and lifting the tip can improve breathing. This can probably be achieved without surgery and with Botox injections.
Nose job or not, whatever he does: as long as he continues to do his job so well, remains a nice person and the things he do make him happy (without harming others, of course), pretty much anything is fine with me.
Sometimes I really need a longer break from K-pop because I think this genre is sometimes really 'tiring', especially all the controversies and artificially hyped things. Music is supposed to be fun and bring joy or accompany us through difficult times. Sometimes I don't see much fun or joy in this genre and the bad times are artificially created.
Is this still entertainment? Or is it just about weighing every statement, questioning every little change, or 'lecturing' or trying to 'educate' others?
I'm waiting for the day when an 'idol' doesn't apologize for some statement (which was meant differently than some others took it), but instead says: 'Just because some people misunderstood it doesn't mean I did anything wrong and there is no need to apologize.'
But i suppose, that's not how K-pop 'works'.
You gotta fight for your right to partyyyyyy! 🥳
In private.
Was this leaked? 😁

'Caught in a Dream...' He made a song for me :)
But wait...this is not a love song...
By the way: FUNNY little FEARS, Damiano David's first solo album, is really good. There's just one thing you shouldn't do: expect Måneskin-like songs.

DEPTH: The Metamorphosis of Nakamoto Yuta 🦋
In my opinion, Yuta always had more of that "rebellious rock star vibe" than the "perfect image" of a KPop idol, and i really like his metamorphosis from a butterfly to a rock star.
For me, as not only a pop music listener but also a rock music lover, Yuta's Japanese solo debut EP DEPTH (release date November 13, 2024) was more than overdue - and a more than positive surprise. One of the two best solo debut albums in 2024 imo. The other is NCT/WayV's TEN EP of the same name, "Ten" (I hope there's one from NCT/WayV's Dejun soon, please!!!)
In 2020, Yuta said in an interview [Men's Non-No], "I feel good when I listen to rock music." On DEPTH, Yuta's love for rock music unfolds, and it is also the heart of DEPTH.
Over the years, YUTA has frequently referenced acts that have inspired his musical taste, telling Japanese outlet Real Sound in 2021 that he loves iconic Japanese rock bands like ONE OK ROCK and L'Arc-en-Ciel. In a recent interview with members of NCT 127, YUTA told Billboard that he's been listening to a lot of Linkin Park lately.
Source: www.grammy.com
I also enjoy listening to bands like ONE OK ROCK, Linkin Park (though I prefer the songs with Chester Bennington), and i have been a huge fan of HYDE as a soloist, L'Arc-en-Ciel, and VAMPS for many years. I personally recognize influences from Hyde on Yuta's EP, the two also seem to be good friends.
A song from 2003. If you don't know him already, please say HELLO to HYDE , too :)
