tangled the series has a lot of issues that i could like.. go on about but i'll start off by saying that the way they treated lance's character is so egregious. out of all of the main characters, lance, the only frequently recurring black character, never gets his own character arc. any slim development (though i would barely call it that) he gets is in relationship to the white protagonists. even characters who have less screentime than him get more development than him despite him being in almost every episode after season 1. he never goes beyond being a incompetent comic relief character to be laughed at and to make the white characters look more intelligent in comparison. there is no way that the writers of this show in a company as big as disney that has already faced scrutiny for racism did not have it cross their minds that there was something wrong with it, especially with the show's other issues with its treatment of race. lance deserved better and to be treated like an actual character.

Things according to the preview of The Rise of Flynn Rider that I will gladly accept as canon:

Little Arnwaldo had hair

Little Arnwaldo went by Arnie

Fitzmom died as a direct result of Edmund trying to destroy the Moonstone (though series canon implies that this whole try to destroy the Moonstone/send everyone away took longer than a few minutes, and I’m going with hard canon over soft canon)

The maid who took Eugene away was a) Fitzmom’s personal maid and b) named Maeve

Things according to the preview of The Rise of Flynn Rider that I will not accept as canon:

Eugene and Arnwaldo growing up in Corona (as opposed to Vardaros)

Eugene hadn’t started stealing before age 12 (the series said he had his engraved knife for fifteen years when he was 25)

Little Arnwaldo was quiet and thoughtful and wrote a lot

Accept:

Eugene was named after Miss Clare’s father

Eugene was especially soft for the younger (more sickly) kids

Arnwaldo was the one who kept telling Eugene to give up on his parents coming back for him and to accept the family he had made there

Eugene writing self-starring fics in his head

Arnwaldo is older between the two of them, and they knew the fate of his parents

Don’t accept:

The orphanage kicked kids out at 13

There was a Dark Kingdom mark on the letter left in his basket

Edmund is the one who gave him the books

So I know I presented “Deranged Marriage” to you last night without comment, but honestly, I’m glad it didn’t get made. Every time someone’s comes into my inbox with this basic premise, I’ve rejected it. Not to say that there weren’t some gem moments in the idea, but overall I’ve never liked the idea of Eugene getting jealous over some other suitor, as though he doesn’t trust that Rapunzel actually loves him. That’s the one thing he is secure about.

And then him going forward with a duel for her after she’s outright said she’s not some trophy and he ignores that? And then challenging Bradley for her hand, like it’s not her decision to be made? Yeah, no bueno.

However, I do love seeing things like this. Episodes that were considered but never made, for better or for worse.
