Her linkpearl pings.
Raising her head, Aureia stares solemnly at the small device on her bedside table, her eyes sliding over the object placed next to it. At some point while she was unconscious, someone dug it out of her things and put it on a pearl tray shaped like a turtle as if to say don’t forget about this. She suspects Alisaie is the culprit, but she has no confirmation she has visited at all. The young woman said nothing to her while she lay broken and bleeding in Aymeric’s arms. She simply looked on with an ice-cold stare and her rapier in hand, then turned and walked away.
The linkpearl pings again.
A shiver ripples down her spine as it occurs to her that it could be Sid on the other end. He would have heard what happened by now, even halfway across the continent in Ishgard. Nothing involving the Warrior of Light or the Eorzean Alliance stays quiet for long, and there were nearly a hundred witnesses that day in the square. The whole world likely knows by now that Aureia Malathar is not who she pretended to be.
Her jaw clenches. She should answer it. Sid will only want to know if she is all right. But the thought of speaking to him now makes her choke; she does not want to hear the gruff voice hiding a broken heart no matter his concern for her. And so she rolls back over, puts the sound from her mind, and returns to staring out the windows.
Across the chamber, the curtains swell with the breeze, cutting across the windows and casting shadows on the floor. Aureia watches the dance in silence, drawing in shallow breaths. A dull ache blooms across her ribs. It is all that remains of her injury. Though Kallias’ blade went straight through her torso and out the other side, Kan-E-Senna’s swift actions undid the worst of the damage. It is thanks to her and the Alliance chirugeons that the blow was not fatal.
It will not even leave a scar.
The healers left her with a strange sense of disappointment when they told her—as if a scar would somehow make this easier or a physical mark could prove the suffering she went through and absolve her of her offences. But beneath her dressings is nothing more than a shallow wound, painful but ordinary. She will heal and she will heal well. As for her wrist and other injuries, they will heal in due course. Kallias committed no lasting damage on her.
She will be ready to return to the field within a fortnight.
A knock raps on her door.
Sinking deeper into the mattress, she absently twists the ends of the bedsheet into a coil and wraps it around the finger of her healing hand. Her eyes glaze over. Spots of light and shadow waver in her peripheral vision as the curtains ripple in the breeze.
The knock raps louder. Insistent.
She pulls the bedsheet tighter.
The door opens.
“You really need to learn how to answer your linkpearl, you know,” Arenvald says.
Aureia blinks.
The door snaps closed.
“I called.” His footsteps echo heavily on the tiled floor as he treads across the room. She flinches and curls into herself, coiling the bedsheet tighter around her hand. It doesn’t hurt much—not yet. “More than once. So you are not allowed to act surprised that I am here. I gave you fair warning.”
He wrenches the curtains back and ties them in place, flooding the chamber with broad daylight.
Her brow furrows.
He drags a chair over to her bed, its feet scraping against the tiled floor. With a long, drawn-out sigh, Arenvald thumps into the seat, then folds his arms and leans over, resting them on his knees. Then he fixes her with a look she has never seen on him before.
Anger.
The kind of anger Clemence has for Aenor when she has done something incredibly foolish.
“Shit,” he says, breaking the silence. “I… I don’t know what to say.”
A muscle twitches in her jaw.
“I had a whole speech planned. It’s been running through my head for the past two days and I was sure I would remember every word. I was going to tell you to sit down and listen, but…” His gaze passes over her. “Shit. How are you doing? Are you feeling all right? I heard the chirugeons say—”
“I’m fine.”
“He stabbed you through the gut. Not in the gut. Through the gut.”
“Happens to the best of us—”
“Look—”
“I’ve done worse to him. I stabbed him in the chest a decade ago and he somehow survived—”
“Would you listen for once?”
“I’m fine. Ask Kan-E-Senna if you’re so concerned.”
“Right.” He sucks in a breath, scraping his teeth over his bottom lip as he thinks of what to say next. “Well, now I’m not. Considering you have made it perfectly clear I have no reason to be.”
Her gut twists.
“You should know—” Arenvald’s leg jitters, bouncing up and down. “—we failed to catch him. Yugiri tracked him across the city, but he evaded her and vanished. I am certain he is halfway to the IInd Legion by now, if not to the Emperor himself.”
Her grip on the bedsheet tightens. The coil digs into her skin, the sensation pleasantly raw.
The Emperor won’t give a fuck. He’s known who I am for some time and decided it didn’t matter. This was never about Garlemald. This was about us.
When she doesn’t voice a reply, he coughs awkwardly and looks away, his leg still bouncing up and down. “I’m surprised they put you here,” he says, searching for words. Any words will do at this point. “The hospital wing is better suited for—well… You’d have to be around others, I suppose.”
Not so different from the other rooms I’ve lodged in. Raubahn insisted on it instead of letting me stay in camp a year ago. Someone to make use of it because no one else would. We all know that’s a lie. If the Lord Commander of Ishgard or the Sultana of Ul’dah reside in guest suites within the royal palace, then so does the Warrior of Light.
Once again, she does not voice the thought. Her mind wanders to the others chambers she has occupied over the past year, some of them not so different from this one. A shiver prickles the nape of her neck and she remembers meeting Fordola late at night in one of the abandoned suites. They didn’t speak much; there was no need. Just a tangle of limbs and the caress of hot breath against searing skin as they sunk onto the mattress beneath a haze of light seeping through the scarlet curtains of a canopy bed.
Not that Arenvald—or anyone—needs to know she and Fordola fucked in any secret corner of the palace they could find. Those were… difficult months. She doesn’t miss them, but thinking on it now makes her flush with guilt all over again.
Arenvald clears his throat. “You haven’t had many uh… visitors, have you,” he rambles, bowing his head to avoid her gaze. His eyes are transfixed by a potted plant in the corner.
Aureia pushes herself up. The mattress creaks beneath her. “You’re the first,” she rasps, her throat dry. Her hair falls about her shoulders, veiling her face in a stringy, greasy mess. Gods, she needs a bath. “Friend, that is. If we even are still… never mind.”
hilda (much like minfilia) was not really someone i considered shipping with thancred. however. my imagination? and my peanits? they are both Up.

LISTEN..... THANHILDA HAS TEETH OKAY. This is probably not an exhaustive list of all their interactions but they're the ones that stand out.
They are low-key flirting (at least he is) the entire time between the arson in the Brume and until the grand melee. He is constantly seen at the Brume with her. He's putting off looking for Emmanellain to hang with her more, and when you're meant to deliver the letter to Hilda he's already gone lmao...
As for the watch—Did he now? How considerate of Master Thancred to seek out our young watch commander of his own volition. Alas, he acted prematurely. Pray deliver this list of watch candidates to Hilda.
he's down bad and their personalities and backgrounds are so perfectly matched. I mean uh she's also like 10 years younger than him but I don't think he cares about problematic age gaps (she's 21) since he was trying to bed Higiri and she's 23 LOL 💀
Not to mention the insane potential for a love triangle (?) love square (???) between wolmeric, wolcred and thanhilda. That shit is crack to me.
