Stephanie Foo, What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma
The Costumes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (2010 - 2021)
Featuring costume design by Jany Temime (Black Widow), Mary Zophres (Iron Man 2), Alexandra Byrne (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron), and Judianna Makovsky (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame).
She made her choice. Now we have to find a way to live with that.
Natasha: What are you two watching? Yelena: It's a horror film. Two ex-convicts try to rob and murder a neglected child. Natasha: Uhh. Kate: She means Home Alone. Natasha: Yelena, that's not a horror film. Yelena: His basement houses a possessed furnace. Kate: You should hear her describe Finding Nemo. Yelena: Oh, you mean the one where the son is abducted by a sadistic diver? Natasha: Why... why are you like this?
(later)
Natasha: Toy Story. Yelena: Sentient toys plotting against their owners.
She talked about you all the time, Yelena.
She did? What did she say?
She told me about how you got separated as kids. She was flying that plane. I asked her if she was scared. All she could think about is that you were safe. That never changed, Yelena. She loved you. And always wanted you safe.
...Thank you for it, I’ve only just arrived to your work but have already binged what you've written for I May Not Let Go, and can’t wait to see where you take it and them on this journey to each other and through everything. Also really appreciate the TW and tags you include before each chapter, not every writer does but it’s a far less jarring when they are there and very kind.
I am excited to share it as well.
The tags are important to me. I dont like to be blindsided. I am the last page in the book kind of person ;)
I am so sorry it's taking so long. I am currently pregnant with twins and the pregnancy is kicking my butt, but I open the document every day and working on it. I promise.
Thank you!
Hello, new fan here! I watched Black Widow recently and came across your amazing writing and blog here. Your characterization of each of them is spot on and feels true to the characters in a way that the MCU will probably never fully explore even with all it’s references and implied true evil and danger that’s glossed over with the Red Room and Hydra. Your brave exploration of it through Natasha, Yelena, Wanda, etc is amazingly thought out and clearly written with great care... 1/2
Thank you thank you! this was wonderfully kind. I really love exploring these characters.
sorry hope this isnt annoying- just wanted to send another sincere thank you for giving such deserved attention to yelena and natasha in your writing. you and Charlie_Balle both explore the sisters trauma with such depth, empathy, emotional sensitivity, and honesty. its truly staggering both in scope and in what youve both individually achieved and supported each other in creating. i was re-reading again and just wanted to restate how appreciated your words are. i wish i had better words myself to explain how meaningful it is, but all i can come up with is thank you for creating and sharing so much. its cathartic and actively healing to read their bond and see the way yelena is on the road to coming back from so much pain with wanda and natasha walking through and processing it as well.
also- outrageous talent and emotional intelligence aside, your writing style is just so personally fun to read. theres like an occasional humor in the banter? idk how to describe it except it just perfectly and seamlessly echoes what marvel does when they're doing it well ya know? like how BW had all these small humorous moments in between some really heavy stuff. and youve somehow taken that and delved even deeper and darker into their trauma and a more painfully realistic background that is only alluded to in canon, but then you manage to weave in these small moments of humor in the tone/dialogue or in the exposition of your writing and idk it just feels so authentic and balanced and is just really well done, so i hope you keep writing in any capacity that continues to inspire you in life! no rush, i know great work takes time, this was just to share another thank you, i cant wait for the next update when it comes!
This is extraordinarily kind. I truly appreciate it.
I shared this with Charlie Balle and we are very flattered and grateful. Thank you! Exploring these characters - While the movie scratched the surface, it opened the window to so much more. This is absolutely wonderful! thank you so much for taking the time to send me this. I am very grateful
Any chance of getting a new chapter of Open Wounds for Christmas this year?
I cannot make any promises sadly. :(
I've been re-reading OW over the last week or so and with today being 9/11 I got to wondering, were to Corcorans still living in NYC on 9/11? How did the kids react to that? I assume Rachel would have still been young enough to not really understand what was going on but how would Noah and Santana have reacted? Especially with their own trauma still being rather fresh.
no they weren't in NYC in 911. The kids weren't born quite yet. That would have been very tough for them. I am close friends who were young in NYC at 911 and it still is debilitating. Great insight and awesome question
just wanted to drop a note that 'i may not let go' has me fully by the throat (and heart tbh) its incredible and heart wrenching and healing and cathartic and just means so much.. sorry im not coherent or able to express this well but truly thank you for writing it and sharing it as you have. its enormously meaningful and been really healing to see yelena get support that so many of us maybe didnt get with those shared traumas. im reading it through for the third time now. idk how to word it, but this whole story feels like being seen and loved anyway despite the horrors and trauma, and i just appreciate it and you and look forward to when youre next able to update. thank you truly.
Thank you so much for your kind words. They seriously mean everything. I promise I have the next chapter -I hope - almost finished. Life got a bit in the way but I certainly have not forgotten about these characters. There’s so much more story to tell. I am enormously thankful that this story provides you with solace. It’s cathartic to write as well.
this makes me feel so grateful that you took the time to reach out! Thank YOU truly. Hang in there. I hope to update so very soon
She made her choice. Now we have to find a way to live with that.
If I didn’t know better I’d think you were still around. I know better but I still feel you all around.
It was real to me too..
