Identity.

I take it upon myself to actively differentiate as they call it, to become distict from who my elders have expected me to be and who I am actually becoming. Though the path laid bare seem daunting, it is the natural course- always has been. Each brick laid down as I walk this path steadys my balance. It is about becoming who I have always been not someone who hasn't existed already. And in that I believe in a map built in me way before I become this form. I am allowing myself to heed its call. Is there another way? The strongest voice is the one that is in me. The one that has been calling to me all along. Merge with it, become its friend, listen to it. Claim its wisdom and freedom.

I want it to be you. I want to be the lucky one, the one who wakes up with you on a Saturday afternoon. The one who kisses you goodnight even if I’m still mad at you. I want so badly to get to write about you, for the rest of my life; without getting my heart broken. I look at you and I see so much more than a home. I want it to be you for as long as possible.

Pomegranate sketch, charcoal and ink on paper, 9x12" I've always been in the habit of taking process pictures while working on a painting or drawing. Now I am starting to compile them into videos that show the process more clearly.

Effort Over First Place

During the morning huddle at work yesterday, my manager mentions to me and two other associate photographers that we are top three after the managers. I admit I was flattered to hear that considering that I've only been at this company for about 6 weeks and others have been there for years.

The huddle breaks and we scurry to get ready for the rush of customers. Another top photographer finds me and says, "How do you feel that you're part of the top three?" "It feels pretty good!," I reply. In his usual playful yet pompous attitude he reminds me that he is number one. Matching his playful tone, I retorted that he can keep his title because it doesn't mean anything to me,hair-flip. I told him I wasn't out to be number one, I'm here to do my best, to which he just chuckles and says some other silly comment. He frequently does this in front of other employees to which I loudly reply with," Just let him say whatever he needs to make himself feel better!"

I write about this because had this occurred about two years ago,my chronically insecure self would have shrank upon hearing those comments. Back then I was determined to be number one, yet it was the root of a lot of anxiety, perfectionism, and disappointment I experienced. After years of learning to let that idea go, now I find that my response to his arrogance truly does reflect my sentiment. I am not interested in being the best, I am interested in trying my best to do my best. There's freedom in that attitude and it's been the backbone to any success I've experienced thus far. No matter what it is that you are striving towards, remember that conscious effort, baby steps, and some faith in yourself will be the crux of your progress.
