I’ve hemmed and hawed over writing this post for a while now—several months, in fact. But as this is something that will affect my writing, I want to be upfront.

I’m going to speak about my health in some detail, so if you’d rather not see, I’ll put it below the cut.

What I will say above the cut is that, due to medical reasons, there will be a longer than usual period between the next couple of updates. At the very least, chapters 7 and 8 will be delayed.

This is NOT a hiatus announcement. Cantata WILL be updated regularly, but those updates will be less frequent as I prioritize my health and family. Cantata, and writing in general, is my happy place, which I now need more than ever.

The situation in more detail, for those comfortable reading it…

I’m facing a pretty extensive and life altering surgery next month. Google APR surgery if you’re curious and not queasy. I have a very large, pre-cancerous mass that needs to be removed. Unfortunately, due to the placement of this mass, they also have to remove the organ it’s attached to.

Everything about my life will change post-surgery. It’s scary and mind boggling and frankly not something I ever imagined for my life. I have no idea what my writing schedule will look like in the near future. Heck, it may even improve. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ll be unable to work for several months so maybe I’ll have more time to write. One can hope.

For my readers approaching 35, 40, 45 years of age… get your colonoscopies and get them early. And if you’re not that age yet, tell your parents to do it. Tell them Fir says to go get their colons checked! 🫵

If you’re curious and so inclined, I’ve created a second tumblr blog to share this experience. You absolutely do not have to follow me there if you’re uncomfortable! But I’ve realized that even if I’m shouting into the void, it’s cathartic for me to talk about and document this. I am a writer, after all. 😉 You can find me at @fir-bag.

To end on a positive, my family, friends, and even my employer have all been incredibly supportive and encouraging. I’ve got a great team in my corner. 💪🏻 Not sure what I’ll look like on the other side of this, but I’m hopeful. That’s how I write my stories, and that’s how I choose to write my life. ❤️
