OP: I’ve noticed an alarming trend among the high school students (and many of the first year college students) I’ve been teaching this summer. They don’t really know how to use computers. They don’t know how to use the mouse as far as clicking, double clicking, and the left and right mouse buttons. They don’t know the layout of the keyboard. They don’t understand the concept of files and folders. Many of them don’t know how to use search engines. I’m going to assume it’s because most of them have grown up using mobile and tablet devices paired with integrated applications that provide information rather than requiring input to acquire information. I do my part by trying to be patient and demonstrating to them that these skills are still critical if they want to develop video games, but it’s still really weird.
