Version 1.2 Released; Development Cycles

New Features

Tap Technologies Inc is proud to release Version 1.2 - another improvement to the easiest way to stay connected! This updated is applicable to both iOS and Android devices, and includes the following improvements:

Updated UI

Visual Errors on Android Devices are fixed

Screens in iOS (especially settings) are easier to navigate

Bug Fixes

Some users couldn’t enter profile names

Improved tapping cross-platform

Code Refactorization (boring stuff)

We spent a lot of time behind the scenes making sure that future updates come out faster!

Product Process

We’ve adopted three week development cycles for future updates - that means that you can expect a steady stream of updates and performance improvements, as we attempt to squeeze as many updates into each three week cycle that we can. We have a long list of features that we want to include in the product, based on your feedback! It includes: adding professional features like Linkedin, E-Mail, and GroupMe; Better Instructions, and leaderboards, among many other.

Tap’s photo finish 🏁

Midafternoon on August 1, the day Tap was scheduled to launch on the App Store, I sat at my desk refreshing iTunes Connect. I was supposed to review some legal documents and fix a bug on the website that afternoon, but I kept coming back to Connect hoping to find a green dot next to Tap, signifying it was ready for release.

iTunes Connect serves as a portal between developers and the App Store. The Tap Team can customize Tap’s page on the store, track usership, and push new features to the app. The week leading up to August 1, iTunes Connect was the final hurdle between Tap and the excited, soon-to-be users. Our development team engaged in a frantic back and forth with the App review team in Cupertino, making cosmetic changes and massaging the store description. The review team works on weekends and into the wee hours of the night, so the notice that Tap needed additional changes to release could come at any moment. I received one notice of rejection at one in the morning.

Midafternoon on August 1, we were overdue for a response. So when I received an email that I had a new message on iTunes Connect, I already had the portal open in my web browser. We had been rejected because Apple needed us to mail them additional third party hardware that was necessary for the app to function.

Sunken hearted, I notified the rest of the team that we would need to delay the launch until we resolved this issue and the issues that would follow. We drafted calculated posts on social media to let down our audience easily. We all agreed the rejection must have been a mistake, but we recorded a video of Tap functioning correctly without third party hardware to make sure it didn’t happen again. At four, I submitted Tap for the fifth time. 

Maybe the previous rejection was an error or our video worked magic. Maybe the stars aligned. Tap was approved by Apple less than two hours later and our CMO Antonio Melegari was the first person to download Tap from the App Store at 6:02 EST on August 1. A week later, Tap has been downloaded 600 times. Download Tap today at yourtapapp.com.

What is Tap?

Tap allows you to connect with new people you meet across multiple social media platforms, all within one app, with one simple motion. Tap takes the friction out of exchanging contact information with new people you meet. In an increasingly interconnected world, it’s impossible to predict where we will meet the most important people in our lives. A block party, a concert, an early morning chemistry lecture, a ski lift, a cloud computing or comic book conference. These places could be the birthplace for a book club, a business relationship, or a lifelong romance. With Tap, no matter where you are, new connections are a simple Tap away.

How to Use

To download the app, simply search “Tap Social Media” within Apple’s App Store, and begin the download. It is completely free! Once you open the app and scroll through the instructions, it’s time to connect your media (phone number, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Youtube). Make sure you turn your phone’s Bluetooth on! Now, when you and another new friend have the app open, simply Tap your two phones together. This can be a knuckle-bump, a light tap on the edges - whatever you feel comfortable doing. Our technical team spent hours ensuring that practically all phone Taps register! A confirmation screen will come up, indicating success.

We are releasing a version of Tap for Android devices on August 21st, so you can be ready to Tap with everyone. Take our app to your high schools, colleges, or workspaces this fall, and be ready to impress new friends with the easiest way to stay connected.

📱 Tap Beta Version 1.0b is Ready to be Tested!

Beta Version

After 6 long months of development, design and consistent changes, we have watched our napkin drawing transform into an actual product. While Tap is not live to the public, it is ready to be tested and reviewed. Our selected Beta Testers have been notified and will be working through the entire app for the rest of July to ensure quality for launch August 1st. 

Updates to iOS

Apps inevitably change with new iOS and Android updates. It is a hurdle for developers to either embrace or stress about.  The drawback is, upon update, most older devices become unsupported and features have to be edited within the app to keep it up to date. In the case of iOS 11, iPhone 5 and 5C may not work seamlessly with newer iPhones when you Tap. 

We at Tap Technologies Inc. promise to only embrace updates and provide the best of the best for its customers as soon as they’re released.

🗺️ Creating A Site Worthy of the World Wide Web

The Initial Vision

Our current site is strictly a pre-launch landing page. August 1st, our new site will transform to serve as a fully operational resource for users. Its purpose is to keep engage users to drive downloads with contents like this blog, while also providing a parking spot for the legal stuff. We’re currently in the process of coding it and we have a good idea of what we want exactly. We’re aiming to create a website that is functional and is visually attractive to match the “2017 look”! The challenge is: How do we make it visually appealing? We are not artists, but fortunately, I work with a team of visionaries! It’s a team effort: we agreed on creating a site that highlights the promotional video, which clarifies the app’s functionality. 

Development Process

The Tap team has collectively mapped out a blueprint and several renderings. We delegated who would be in charge of which pieces of the project of developing the site. After all the tasks had been assigned, we worked out a realistic and efficient timeline that would allow us room to polish and refine the site. If there’s one thing I’ve learned with digital development, is everything is dynamically changing with the advancements in technology and a developer’s work is never done. One subject for debate was keeping Tumblr for a blogging service or developing a solution in-house. Switching over and getting off Tumblr benefits included: the website being more uniform and visually appealing as an “all in one”. Whereas, staying on Tumblr allows our a new audience to share and interact with our posts! The verdict was to keep Tumblr and let it broadcast our content for us, giving the project “Tap” even more exposure. Don’t worry Tumblr, We’re grateful to be on here and we’re not leaving!   We will see you online August 1st!

✍️ Legally Structuring Your Start Up

In the beginning of May, Tap LLC turned into Tap Technologies Inc, a C-Corp with legal offices in the state of Delaware. Our legal corporate structure evolved smoothly, and we want to share our experience with other founders who face similar dilemmas.

LLC, C-Corp, or S-Corp?

Legally structuring a new business can be overwhelming due to the wide breadth of options. Luckily, for a tech startup with multiple business partners, we had only three choices: an LLC, a C-Corp, and an S-Corp. Due to the ease of a forming an LLC, we first formed as a Limited Liability Company in our home state of Rhode Island. This allowed us to quickly open a bank account, and an added benefit was that losses were “passed through” to the managing members, so the Tap Founding Team gets a tax break from Uncle Sam this April! However, we became acutely aware of the limitations of an LLC when a potential investor, very well-respected in the tech industry, bluntly informed us that without a C-Corp headquartered in Delaware, he wouldn’t consider investing. Promptly thereafter, we made a unanimous vote to re-incorporate in the State of Delaware. We did this independently, without a lawyer, by simply emailing the Secretary of State’s office. With a board meeting under our belts and articles of incorporation filed, we can confidently say we made the right decision. Although it was more luck than foresight, we can recommend startups in positions similar to our (pre-revenue with multiple business partners) follow our trajectory! 🔥 A Bonfire To Remember, Day Two was A Success!

On Saturday, June 10th, we concluded the filming of the Tap promo video. The setting of the commercial was a bonfire party scene. It was particularly challenging due to the number of people involved. It was filmed in Jamestown, Rhode Island at a private beach, which was extremely helpful. If we filmed it at a public beach, it would be difficult for us to block out people not affiliated with the commercial.

Filming took about two hours, much less time than day one. The filming done was fantastic and professional, the team and I are so excited to finish editing it. I would really like to give a shout-out to our cameramen, Phil, and Sam, and our drone pilot, Alec. Also, to all of the actors. Without them, none of this would’ve been possible. I was truly amazed at how well everyone worked together. I think that the viewers of the commercial will be very pleased when it’s aired Aug 1st. 🌞 The Weather Complied, Day One was A Success!

Overview

We filmed the first half of our commercial today! The commercial went extremely smoothly, and the weather held up very nicely. The morning started off at Turtle Soup restaurant where we filmed the 2nd out of three parts of the commercial. We then transitioned to shots down at the Seawall.

Satisfaction

I was extremely happy with everyone’s performance and willingness to make it as perfect as possible. The lead actress, Mary, did a fantastic job and showed great enthusiasm for the whole project. All of the actors involved will make a lasting impact on the viewers of the commercial. They all showed an immense amount of passion, and I couldn’t have been more thankful to them.

📹 Filming A Commercial!

This week, on Wednesday, June 7th, Tap will be filming its first commercial. The purpose of this commercial is to showcase the app idea. The commercial will be filmed in Narragansett, down by the seawall, and some parts of Jamestown. We are lucky that Rhode Island has some really beautiful spots that are perfect for filming! It will be aired on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter on Aug 1st.

Background:

Back in March, the Tap Team and I went searching for a crew who could film a video that would accurately be able to film our vision. We met with our local video/editing heroes, Phil and Sam. Having them on board was great. They shared the same passion and creativity towards the app as we did! After a few months of planning, and location scouting, it is very exciting for the #TapTeam to be filming its first commercial! I have been holding my excitement for so long, and I hope that everyone enjoys it!

Fingers crossed, hoping that the weather is good to us!

📕 Running A Business As A College Student

College Life

About a year ago I received letters from colleges that I applied too. Some of the schools accepted me, and others didn’t. Ultimately I decided on The University of Rhode Island. The first semester of college was a learning experience. I met new friends, studied hard, and became familiar with the campus. Towards the start of the second semester, my friend Anthony approached me with the app idea.

I had never been or heard of a “CMO” before, and taking on the role was a great experience for me. Prior marketing experience was done from promoting my YouTube channel. Fast forward a few months and now the team and I are in the pre-launch stage for an app that we believe will revolutionize the way that people interact socially.

As a student balancing school and a business, it can be pretty challenging. Staying focused is key. Sometimes it’s difficult to see friends going out and having fun. Sometimes in life, you must make a choice to go on the “fun” path or try to make your own. In today’s world, there are billions of followers, but very few leaders. People are afraid to break from their comfort zone, and take the initiative.

I decided to take the initiative this January. I am so and happy to be working on an extensive project because creating something that everyone can use is inspiring. Yes, balancing time can be difficult, but I want to influence and inspire others as much as I can! Hard work pays off and is rewarding in the end.

Shifting into Drive

I had an idea and I decided to act on it. I intuitively knew the potential size: this could really be something everyone my age could be using. I didn’t want to commit to it on my own. I knew that if I waited, the app would’ve hit the market before I was able to execute on it.

To do things right, I had to get the right people involved and we had to work as a team. I had to act fast, so I decided to make a few calls, and find the first two interested in making history! It wasn’t that hard. I brought on the first two equity partners: CMO Antonio Melegari, and CFO Connor McGill. At this time I knew I was no longer a one-man band, WE were a team and it was OUR idea. After the first board meeting at our world headquarters, (also known as my mom’s house), we had to find a developer to get this to market ASAP.

Trip to “The Big Apple” 

After a few hours of online research, and several calls to firms in the Northeast, we had found our development firm. The team and I took a trip to the Big Apple to meet a freelancer at cheap prices with endless promises. It seemed too good to be true, but we didn’t know any better. We believed him and he strung us on for a few weeks until a contract came into play. When he realized it was time to sign something legally he fled, nobody, knows to this date why but he is certainly no longer on the Tap Team!

8/10/17 Update by Connor McGill: After working for several months with digital development firm Koombea Inc., we were delivered an impressive project that was made possible by their hardworking team in the US and Columbia, with assistance from our CEO Austin Letson and CTO Isaac Kaufman. 🤝 You’re Hired!

At the beginning of the month, Tap Technologies Inc signed an agreement with two students from Georgia Tech making them equity partners: Isaac Kaufman and W. Austin Letson. Isaac studies Electrical Engineering, and Austin studies Computer Science. They bring to the team unparalleled experience in design, development, and will aid the original 3 founders through the advisement and creation of a beautiful product.

How to Find A CTO

Isaac and I have been close friends since elementary school, and entrepreneurial partners in crime from our first lemonade stand, to our current computer repair business, Next Tech Solutions LLC. A month ago, I approached Isaac about this idea that we were developing, asking only for his opinion on the idea. His confidence in the concept led me to propose to him equity in return for his unrivaled expertise in development. Attending a top school exposed him to the brightest minds in computer science, and he asked me to consider allowing another top-tier developer to the team, vouching for his skills. To meet him, I took a trip down to Atlanta and found that our personalities were very compatible and that we worked effectively together. Although my ego was bruised after a 6 mile run on the Beltway, during which I took frequent walk breaks, I was thoroughly impressed by Austin’s previous work and intellect, as well as his commitment to the idea. As the advertising legend, David Ogilvy wisely stated, “if you ever find a man who is better than you are - hire him”. Well, we made two of those people partners, ensuring that the Tap App will be a beautifully engineered product. I advise all other founders who are experienced in areas of law, finance, and marketing to seek and sign to equity a CTO: you will be glad you did! A smaller piece of a large pizza is worth more than a whole Lunchable!

🔎 How To Find Your Business Partners

Starting your own business can be a daunting task. Everything has to be legalized, and most of the time the businessman/woman has to accumulate some money to get started. In the initial stages of creating a company, it’s wise to find a business partner. This will help divide up work and keep the ideas flowing.

Finding your business partner can be difficult. Generally, you would want your partner to be just as hungry to succeed as you do! Running your own business can be very difficult at times. You and your partner, or partners, will encounter discouragement. It’s good to have someone who is also working towards the same goal to encourage the team to fix problems. Partners sometimes get into arguments, and it’s good to have a mediator. Also, always be open to new potential partners. Think about the most reliable people in your life, and base your partner off of that.

Make sure your partner is trustworthy. Almost a no brainer, but can be overlooked. Trust is very difficult to gain and extremely easy to lose. It is important that you and your partners are transparent, and share your feelings. As weird as it sounds, you’re basically married to your business partners. You’re going to be spending great amounts of time with them. It’s very important to keep a healthy relationship with your partners.

In my personal experience my friend, Anthony, approached me with an idea of creating a mobile application. I was very intrigued to get started. I had never been part of a project this big before! At my university, I had a friend, Connor, who lived down the hall from me. He ran a local tech repair business and was highly intelligent.I always admired his organizational skills. After Anthony approached me with the idea, I immediately thought about including Connor on the project. A few short months later and the three of us have created a company, Tap Technologies Inc. If I had lived on a different floor, or never became friends with Anthony, this company would never have been a possibility. In addition, we added two equity partners, Austin and Isaac to handle the website and Andriod portion of our app.

I would say the best piece of advice that I can give, is to be on the lookout for a person that you can truly rely on. If your partner isn’t reliable, odds are the project won’t work. Also remember that “team” is very important, in order to succeed. Rome was not built in a day.
