At the dawn of the space age, test pilot “jocks” who flew high-speed experimental rocket planes and the Mercury 7 astronauts who rode the Redstone & Atlas rockets needed a timepiece that befitted their ventures into a brave new world. Enter America’s first microsonic wristwatch, the Bulova Accutron introduced in October 1960. The Accutron 214 movement appeared a full decade before the first commercial quartz watch by Seiko of Japan. October 1971, NACA & NASA test pilot John McKay retired from high-speed flighttest activities. A former Navy pilot, as a civilian research pilot/aeronautical engineer, McKay made 30 flights in X-15s from October 28, 1960, until September 8, 1966. His peak altitude was 295,600 feet, and his highest speed was Mach 5.6 (3863 mph or 6216 Km/hr). McKay is seen next to a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter jet wearing an Accutron Astronaut tuning fork wrist watch. This microsonic “hummer” wristwatch was introduced by Max Hetzel of Bulova and issued to the Mercury 7 astronauts, USAF & NASA test pilots. October 1960, Bulova introduced the Accutron microsonic tuning fork wrist watch developed by William Bennett & Max Hetzel. The shock-resistant stainless steel Accutron featured a black face with luminous hour markers, an adjustable push down 24-hour outer ring, and a second hour hand so both local & Greenwich Mean Time could be set and displayed simultaneously. By 1962 the Accutron wristwatch was adopted by NASA’s Mercury 7 astronauts, USAF and civilian test pilots, even by CIA pilots flying the A12 reconnaissance aircraft.
