I painted a sunset based on the Allegany River Trail for this assignment. In the Formal Elements lesson, we learnt about complementary colors. I incorporated mostly blues and oranges in the sunset, which are complementary colors. This added both warm-tone and cool-tone colors to the painting. In the Abstract Expressionism lesson, we learnt about all-over composition. I drew inspiration from Ed Clark and painted the background in sweeping motions. The lesson mentioned that he used a broom to achieve this effect, and that is a reminder that artists do not have to always follow the rules. So, I painted the sunset background with my fingers instead of a paintbrush. Lastly, I went back into the magazine and cut out images that resonated with me, as we had done in the Fashion Design assignment (from the Formal Elements lesson). I chose to put the two dancers at the bottom, as dancing is an important part of my life that I am leaving behind at Bonaventure since I am graduating this semester. I put images of studying, healthcare, and science above since I am going to medical school next year. This reflects what I am leaving at the bottom and what I am going towards at the top.

My puppet's name is Ann. She was made from a paper towel roll. Her skirt is also made of a paper towel roll. She has designs on her made from pens and highlighters. Her hair is made of a green cardboard box. The strings to hold the puppet was from a fruit basket.

Ann is an introverted girl but once she opens up, she is very funny and loyal. She is artistic and loves to dance and sing. Her hobbies include reading, going on walks, spending time with her cats, and crocheting. Her favorite artist is Frank Ocean, so she is dancing to his song Novacane.

For my assignment, I designed a purse. I made the purse out of a vase shaped like a book, flowers for the handles, and an ornament for a keychain. I added some cardboard cutouts from a Burger King crown to add decoration. I hand-painted the ornament a few months ago—it is a Christmas tree in the snow. I took a video of my friend using the purse, and she showed how functional it is by adding chocolate to it. These are all items we were planning on discarding when we moved out of our townhouse.

My article focuses on "designer babies." Being able to choose your baby's features has become more common with IVF. While it is great for ensuring the child has a lower chance of developing a disease through screenings, more parents have started to choose other features like sex. There are many ethical dilemmas that come with this.

My image shows a screen where a parent can check off whatever features they want their child to have. Some of these options are already available to parents and this process will likely become easier in the future as science develops further.

I chose to draw my friend Anu! When you first meet her she can be shy and a little introverted but as you get to know her more, the livelier she gets! I chose her to be a pink/orange because of her happy, optimistic view of things. There is a lot of green in the image as well because she is also very good at grounding people. There are a lot of bright colors in this because she has a very joyful personality. I used markers, highlighters, and colored pens for this assignment.

I spent time creating a background of different shapes. Each shape is its own color. At first, I stuck to shapes I was familiar with but as time went on, I started to create different types of shapes. I really enjoyed spending time letting my creativity form different shapes. For the cutouts, I had to cut a few more than I initially planned to make it work (ex: the hair), but it worked out in the end!

The moment I have chosen is from the 2023 SBU ASIA show. In my sophomore year, I choreographed a classical Indian dance for the show. I have been learning that dance style since I was four years old and it is extremely important to me. Dancing has taught me so much about myself and has helped cultivate who I am today. Being able to teach others the dance form and share what I love was amazing. My drawing is an image of one of the dancers who participated in my dance on show day. She is in the traditional outfit and is spinning.

This is my first art piece of Arth-322. For my album I chose Utopia by Travis Scott. Travis Scott has been one of my favorite artists for a while now and wanted to bring my touch to the album cover. The original Album cover is pretty plain and could have used some more. I added a set of eyes on top of the whole album recapping one of him most popular songs "My Eyes" where it starts out slow and then picks up. He dedicates a whole verse to talking about what it is like to walk in his shoes. On the bottom I put two sections, the left side as the "utopia" or the perfect world. On the right I have a drawing of hell and darkness. This really sums up what Travis' discography really is which is a roller coaster of emotions. One song can be completely up-tempo and fast paced then the next can be a dark eerie song.

This is the album cover of "Un Verano Sin Ti" by Bad Bunny. My favorite song off of this album is "Callaita". The things I incorporated into my art which I took from the album cover are the vibrant colors, but also the sad expression on the heart's face, as "un verano sin ti" is a Spanish phrase translated to "a summer without you". I tried to emphasize the contrast between the sadness of the heart and the bright and vibrant atmosphere surrounding it.

I decided to choose an image of Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala. I chose this pop culture moment because in this day and age, beauty standards for women are constantly changing, and celebrities like the Kardashians are known to propagate this. I remember that during this specific Met Gala, many people were shocked about the body proportions Kim Kardashian was able to achieve in her dress. This specific outfit made me have a stronger reaction just because of how drastically she was able to change her body. While celebrities are free to do what they want, many people are exposed to this and then end up thinking that this is normal and the standard when it is not.

Again, this image and this outfit highlight how absurd standards are for women and their bodies. Women are constantly expected to change their bodies to fit society’s beauty standards. This can be extremely harmful for women as they grow up because they are taught to seek out a specific body type. Social media plays an extremely important role as influencers can photoshop images of themselves to better fit the beauty standard without the general public knowing.  In reality, both men and women can have many different body types but would still be healthy and fit.

Although Photoshop harms body image, I do not think it will stop being used any time soon. I think this type of technology will continue to advance and become more realistic, especially with the recent growth of AI. Therefore, we need to focus on remembering that what we see online is usually never truly real.

For my piece, I decided to also include a sunset background. Like Reilly, I included stars in the back to indicate space since, in both of the other art pieces, the magazine images were scattered throughout the page. This reminded me of space and how the figures would be placed if they weren’t on Earth. Like Mason, I included images of things that mean a lot to me and hold sentimental value. These images include rowing competitively, spending time with friends and family, baking new recipes, and studying to be a doctor. Another reason why I chose these particular activities is because I usually listen to music while doing them, which connects the piece back to the music album theme.

For this assignment, I chose orange and blue as the complimentary colors. I made the background symmetrical and used gel pens. For each line, I chose a different pattern and kept the same color on either side of the page. For my outfit, I ended up doing a white/cream color theme. I found shoes and a bag from a store catalog to buy clothes from. The back of the skirt is made from a white shirt, and the front of the skirt is made of individual stuffed peppers. The top is a loose white button-down with a tie, with a girl wearing a traditional hat.

In this assignment, I decided to do a cover of the album, “DAMN” by Kendrick Lamar. Instead of “DAMN” I included the word “PASSION” instead. As the word turns green, the color bleeds out of the lines. The green color represents passion and how, over time, it can start to leak through to other parts of your personality. Around the image, I included music notes. As the colors above turn from orange to green, the music notes change from multicolored to red. The notes become more complicated and plentiful. This again shows how passion can become all-consuming and take over an individual’s life. I chose the central image because in the original album, there is just a picture of Kendrick Lamar’s face. I wanted to do something similar that also helped to represent passion. My favorite song from this album is LOVE.

I am a senior at SBU majoring in Biology and minoring in Business Administration. I hope to go to medical school and become a physician after graduating. I like listening to music, watching new shows on Netflix, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

I am originally from Massachusetts and loved art in all forms when I was growing up. I enjoyed dancing, listening to a variety of music, and spending time in museums admiring artwork.
