Gosh, I keep getting mad about this same issue. Apparently, God is trying to reiterate in many different ways how vital it is that I pay attention to this particular lesson.
Are we all prejudiced? Look at these following examples:
Scenario 1: We recently found out one of our family members was cheated on by their spouse. This was HEARTBREAKING. It seriously did not seem like something that person would ever do. On top of that that spouse had been manipulating the situation to make our family member feel like they were crazy and just being untrustworthy. Needless to say, we were pissed. That person has been written off as a douche in our book.
Scenario 2: I belong to a Lost and Found Pets page on FB. A few days ago, a post began receiving a lot of attention after an a badly injured dog was photographed and shown to be receiving little shelter, was chained up, and was obviously not being well taken care of. The people on this site rushed to inform authorities and news stations. Somehow the dog eventually was taken to seek medical treatment and is now in a veterinary hospital.
Scenario 3: The same Lost and Found page received a post regarding lost animals. The commenter voiced that it was concerning/confusing to them as to why so many people are losing their animals in the area. Another commenter on that post went as far as to say, they just don’t think the animal’s owners care that much about them, “easy come, easy go.”
Well…
Look at these other real-life scenarios:
Myself and my whole family are also good friends with a local family back home. The parents met while one of the spouses was married to someone else and they started an affair and later got married themselves…yet we are GOOD friends with them. Why? How can we look at this situation that has recently presented itself to us as so differently when we are close to the other couple who stayed together and even got married!
Regarding the other two scenarios, replace “animal” with child. How differently would these scenarios have played out?
A sick, injured child not being well taken care of…authorities not taking it seriously…
Yeah that would go over GREAT.
And the next one?
I asked that last person who commented if she would say the same if it was a family that had a loved one go missing. She responded, “apples to oranges.” Really? Is it? To me losing one of my pets is seriously like losing a family member. They ARE a loved one.
So all of this makes me think… Why do we look at things so differently? Things that to me…are very similar.
I mean couldn’t we look at this like we used to look at the topic of race? All of this is a matter of individuals choosing where to place importance.
Why is it that the spouse-in-law in the first scenario is hated by my family and the other couple is our friends?
Why is it animals can be looked as “lesser” than us?
It sounds similar to other times of society…
People thinking they are more important or “better” than other people because of their skin color…
People killing millions of people because they weren’t “good enough” to carry their genes into the future gene pool…
Hm…something doesn’t add up here.
