Ways of Seeing Instagram

Isn’t it striking that the most-typical and most-maligned genres of Instagram imagery happen to correspond to the primary genres of Western secular art? All that #foodporn is still-life; all those #selfies, self-portraits. All those vacation vistas are #landscape; art-historically speaking, #beachday pics evoke the hoariest cliché of middle-class leisure iconography… Technology has so democratized image-making that it has put the artistic power once mainly associated with aristocrats—to stylize your image and project yourself to an audience as desirable—into everyone’s hands.

Final work. 

On the whole, I liked how the image transfer changed the appearance of the original pieces. Even the first image transfer, although the ink ran, it worked well with my concept of imperfection.

Me: It doesn’t take someone two minutes to figure out I’m not from here. Friend: From where? Pakistan, Germany? Me: Both. Apparently I don’t belong to neither of them. People always ask me where I’m from because they “can see” that I’m not from there, I’m not one of them.

Anyway, it’s a picture from an old travel magazine I picked up in a charity shop a few years ago.
