tarantula hybrids
brachypelma baumgarteni & brachypelma boehmei
in the wild, b. baumgarteni (left) and b. boehmei (middle) are separated by a river, limiting their chance to naturally hybridise. in captivity however, the two have been intentionally crossed with success. many of the resulting hybrids are now sold as boehmei with many buyers not knowing that their animal is not a pure spider.
hobby form of the honduran curlyhair
the “hobby form” (left) of this spider is a hybrid. due to intentional hybridisation with other species, typically b. vagans, the hobby is now full of these hybrids which often pass for true b. albo. some keepers now consider only wild caught curlyhair specimens to be pure because of the extent of this cross-breeding in the hobby.
african baboon (hysterocrates sp.) hybrids
members of this genus are frequently cross-labelled and misidentified, especially h. gigas and h. eredi. with all this confusion going on, it’s very likely that hybrid pairings have occured and the resulting offspring have made it into the hobby, to the point where it’s said that you would need to source a wc individual to guarantee a pure one. that being said, they still make interesting additions to any collection - in fact, some species have a remarkable ability to swim and hide underwater and they can be kept in communal setups as adults.
