I thought the stories of how art became in two different cultures was very interesting. I feel like the argument that Cubitt brings up about art being a way of outliving death is so true. Think of how many times royal families have painted portraits of themselves hung up as a reminder that they are still there. I thought it was also interesting that he says, projection is not only an activity we use to relax, but it can also act as a weapon. I love the way he explains projection and reflection in the examples of Buddhist and Pliny’s stories.
The elements of time and motion bring an extra bit of interest into art. When working with time in 4D art, the artist is in charge of how long they want to hold a viewers attention for. Time uses duration, tempo, and a narrative to create an event. Time can be designated into either implied, actual, or recorded time. Implied time uses illusion to create time. Actual time is real time passing. Recorded time is all of the dimensions of time in film or video. Like time, motion can have recorded, implied, or actual as well. Motion is critical because the artist needs to decide how to make the viewers eyed move across the whole composition. It also needs to hold the viewers attention for the duration of the video.
