“I did just leave him. Sometimes I wish I should have listened to father and sent Daemon to Essos. He would have lead a nice life far away from here and I wouldn’t have to live with the pain of seeing him everyday. Or maybe he could have responded to my letters and taken us both from here.”

“But if he had gotten sent to Essos, then you wouldn’t have had the chance to see him again. Now you have that chance. Not as his mother, but you can still see him. Isn’t that good as well? It’s better than nothing.”

“It isn’t common for it to be taken into consideration,” Dacey agreed.  “But your mother loves you, Rhaella.  If I know her as well as I think I do, she will at least try to consider your opinions.”

“I hope you are right then. I guess I just have to wait and see.”

“What if I don’t want other children? How will I ever face Daemon when he gets older? He won’t know, but I will. I’ll know that I left him.”

“You didn’t just leave him. It was not a choice that you could make. It was beyond your power. You are a Targaryen princess, while little Daemon was born out of wedlock. It would have been shameful if people found out, and it would have resulted into a huge scandal for the whole royal family. It had to be avoided. And that seemed like the only way.”

“Do we have to be afraid of them, however? You have both a dragon and a direwolf by your side, do you not, your highness? Do you think we should be afraid of them?”

“Yes, that is true. I do have a direwolf and a dragon too. They are both quite beautiful. I don’t think anyone should be afraid. I know they’re bigger and stronger, but I believe if they are treated with kindness and trust, they will return the gesture.”

“Oh, it’s a story about a girl who turns a wolf into a man with magic and… the power of her love, but in the end it wasn’t strong enough, and he turns into a wolf again. It’s heartbreaking.”

“Sounds strange to me. He is essentially a wolf. She shouldn’t be in love with a wolf.”

“Hawks and horses, even hounds, I can deal with.” An exhausted sigh left his lips as he slid a hand through his dark hair. “But having a direwolf, albeit sweet and harmless, took a bit of getting used to. I wonder what would scare the servants most; a dragon or a direwolf?”

“I think both a direwolf and a dragon can be scary to most people, my lord.”

“‘Don’t worry, I’ll save you. Your life will be like my own life.’ This is such a sad book… I don’t think I’ve ever heard a sadder story.” 

“What is it that you’re reading, Rose?”

“You’ll have other children in the future. I believe that.”

“She may not know exactly, but it is not difficult to tell who a woman could have a good life with.  They must be compatible in more than just birthright.  Take my marriage to your uncle.  True, it was not a true match the way you will have, but when my mother found out of my interest in Benjen, she wasn’t surprised.  We are compatible enough for a marriage to work.”

“But I thought in most cases that is not taken into consideration? Especially if the lady is of very high birth. Is it not true? I know my mother and my father were lucky, they fell in love and there was no issue with a marriage between a Stark and a Targaryen. It was in fact beneficial. I know of ladies who are plainly forced into their marriages, and they do not turn out to be good ones.”

“They are quite different.  But…I know your mother.  She wants to do what is best for you.  Her concern will be what makes you happy as well as what would be a good match.  You said so yourself, your brother is too busy to find you a match. It seems reasonable that task would fall to your mother, with the king’s input, of course.”

“What makes me happy? How would my mother know what could make me happy? I fear even I can’t answer to that. I’d just say for her to focus on the good match part.”

“Telling him the truth will only put him in danger. He will grow up thinking Daenerys is his mother, not me, and it will stay that way.”

“Won’t that be painful to you?”

“My family’s history with the Ironborn has me quite biased on the matter.  I had assumed the rest of Westeros was less so, at least before the rebellion.  But, in that case the Baratheon boy will probably be your only option.  Unless Aegon decides to marry you to a lesser house.  Though I feel while your brother may have the final approval of the match, it will be your mother making the decision, Rhaella.”

“They’re too different, Aunt Dacey. The Ironborn. At least in my eyes. My ladies have told me so.”

“My mother? What makes you say so?”

“The Greyjoy boy would have been possible had the Iron Islands not rebelled.  I doubt your brother would allow that match now.  And there is the Lannister boy, but he’s a good deal younger than you, I believe.”

“Oh, an Ironborn? Never! With or without their rebellion. I’ve heard some not very flattering things about them. And yes, I think the young lord Lannister is way too young for me.”

“Well, you are a Targaryen princess.  The best possible match would be with one of the great houses.  Maybe the Baratheon boy?  Of course, I am not as well versed in southern politics.”

“And he is my only option? Is he not? I can’t recall any of the other Great Houses having a son that could suit me. When I think about it, that is quite sad.”

“And I know that. You must keep this secret, Rhaella. If not for me, then for Daemon. He is innocent in all of this. He deserves a happy life.”

“Do you plan on telling him the truth? At some point when he grows up? Or will the identity of his true mother remain a secret even from him forever?”

“The chances of getting hurt on a ride are awfully slim, your Highness. But I’ll be here. And you know, we’ll have a few men with us as per usual.”

“But the cliffs are a whole different thing, Lord Orys. And I can’t just count on the nice weather. I’m afraid I’ll have to turn you down now, but I remain open to other horseriding propositions of yours in the future.”

“It’s just frustrating. It was a huge risk you took.”
