Also it's my personal opinion that, early on in their careers, many people who didn't know them well would have assumed that shane and ilya were, if not friends, then at least friendly. Like we joke about scott's "where's your boy rozanov?" but he did genuinely assume shane would know where ilya was. And in Sochi, vaughn says to shane "what did he say about it (russia losing to latvia)?" as if he expected ilya to have said something to shane specifically. ok so maybe it's just the admirals. whatever. My point is that I think probably most random league players wouldn't assume that the "rivalry" they have is, like, a real and personal dislike of each other. I think they mostly just assume it's kayfabe. Obviously people who are close to shane and ilya do think they dislike each other, because they never do anything to dispute the rivalry, and if they were friendly, why would they hide that from their close friends? But to like, a random player who sees each of them twice a year, I really doubt they'd be surprised if they were told that shane and ilya hang out sometimes.
