The Devil You Know: some thoughts on Tarot's devil card

I was surprised earlier to see how negatively the Devil is viewed, and how it’s seen as a force of chaos.

I guess others would be surprised to know in my considerable 13- nay, 14! Wow!- 14 years of Tarot, I have have never been taught to see this card as negative.

Rather, I was taught to see it as a maker of contracts. You are trapped in promises, deals, contracts, or obligation. Your delighted decisions turn into the chains that bind, and your flights of fancy become real world ties that bind you. Yesterday’s pleasure is today’s pain.

In a sense, this is in fact the exact opposite of the chaotic beast unleashed.

I would be curious to see how many people share this interpretation and how it changes the readings of those who see the devil as anarchic.
