FMP: Task 6 - Evaluation
I think in this project I did a better job at sticking to the timetable I had prepared and I was also able to keep up with my plan to do a mini-review of my progress so far in each week, with each of the mini-reviews being a good amount (a paragraph or two).Ā However I did not upload as much WIPs as I would have liked, and I took time to upload some of them, uploading them a couple of days after I should have.Ā
To be able to stick to the timetable, and to be able to have a finished coloured animation, I was not able to animate as much as I wanted to. I had aimed for at least 10 seconds of animation, however I underestimated how long syncing animation to music would take and so was only able to create 5.5 seconds.Ā
As I did not want my animation to be the character just standing still while singing, so I wanted to involve some movement and follow through animation. However, due to having to animate this and the mouth in sync with the song, I was not able to make that many frames for the characters movement, so the animation is not as smooth as I would have liked for it to be.
If I were to make changes to this animation, I would want to add more frames to make the animation a better quality. I would maybe also make the animation longer, lasting for the whole chorus of the song. Another addition I would make is a background; I did not have time to think of and create one for this animation before the deadline.
Another issue with my animation is that where the frames were drawn in Photoshop and imported into Flash, the quality of the images wasn't very good, for example the mouth pieces are blocky and have blue outlines. I did not know how to fix this and also did not have time to do so before the deadline, but it would be nice to find a way to solve this issue.

Plan for Today
First of all I need to export my animation so I can upload it here. I also need to sort out my FMP work on Behance, however I will have to do that at home as Behance doesnāt work on these macs.
I then need to evaluate the work, writing up another text post here. After that I will spellcheck all my written work and check everything is ok for final submission.
Animation WIPs
I have been able to colour all my frames and insert them into Flash, however that will not be uploaded until tomorrow.
As I mentioned in my last post, I ended up redoing the lip sync parts that I had made up to a certain point.
Here was what I originally had:
I had a lot of frames in this, making the transitions in between mouth shape smooth. This took a lot of time to do but I noticed it looked really odd with the rest of the animation. The character animation is not very smooth and does not flow as well itself so it did not fit right to have such smooth mouth animation.
I redid the parts I had so far:
This did not take too long to do as I just had to reinsert the main frames without the in between frames.
The full animation sketch that I have including the mouth parts:
The animation could do with more frames in between the ones I have to smooth it out, however I was not left with enough time to do so. Also in the sketch some parts move around too much and strangely, but that has been fixed in the lined & coloured version.Ā The coloured version will be uploaded soon.
FMP: Week 10 Review + Progress Update
I have been able to finish the lip syncing and lines for my animation, all that is left to do is colour it and then move the finished frames into flash. I ended up redoing the lip syncing that I had so far, but this will be explained later when I post some work in progresses, as it will be easier to explain with the examples.
I think I am on time and will be able to finish the animation before the deadline.
Progress:
The first fully coloured frame. I put a palette with the colours I might have used in the corner and I put the colours on a layer underneath the line layer. Iāve organised all the layers into different groups. The mouth parts are in a group of their own, the Frames that have not been coloured yet are in a group and each finished Frame has its own group.
Process of the second frame being coloured. The lines are one āFrame 2 Linesā and all of the colours are put on āFrame 2 Coloursā using the brush tool. I chose to use the brush tool instead of selecting and filling the spaces as I found this much easier, even if it takes a little longer.
FMP: Week 9 Review
During this week I have finished syncing my main frames of my animation to the music and made a start to the lip syncing. I did about half of the lip syncing before moving on to start outlining my frames.
I have decided on focusing on the first line of my storyboard, which is about a third of my plan; it will be better to have a shorter animation that flows better than finishing the whole plan but at a lower quality.
Next week I will finish off the lip syncing as well as continue to outline my frames. I hope to get this done this week so I can add colour before rendering.
Animation WIP
Rough of my animation so far
The blank frame that flashes up for a bit is where I need to add a new frame in. Once Iāve made and added the new frame, I will start to add her mouth into the animation. After this I will start to touch up the frames by redrawing over them, and hopefully I will have time to add colour too.
Hereās the plan I made that involves the order the mouth shapes will be needed for the animation. Instead of planning for the whole audio clip, this is only for the part the gif above covers; the amount of animation I have so far.
FMP: Weeks 7 & 8 Review
For the past two weeks I have been focusing on putting the frames of my animation into Flash.Ā
First I had to import the music file into Flash. I had a bit of trouble with it at first as it played the whole audio clip every time I test played the animation, and the song would continue to play even after I paused/stopped the test playing. This was solved by changing the sync settings to stream.
All of the frames I have so far have been put into the flash file now, I have noticed some places where I should add more frames to make the animation smoother or more interesting.
In my proposal I had planned for these weeks to be dedicated to touching up the animation and colouring it, however I am not at the point where I can do so yet. I have planned out the mouth shapes needed for the animation and will add them in next week, as well as adding the extra frames.Ā
I will focus on finishing the first line of my storyboard for now, and if I have time later I will add more animation on as I go.

Animation WIP
I drew out the body parts, etc, of the character on separate layers so that I could just move and rotate the parts to create each rough frame. These rough frames arenāt meant to look exact, as I will correct things when I draw over them once the basic animation is done.
I also included different eyes (such as eyes closed, and half closed for the process of blinking/closing eyes) and eyebrows for different expressions. As shown in a previous post, I also have different mouths sketched out.
I started to work on making a couple of rough frames for my animation, starting out the basic frames for the first row in my storyboard. However, I was working entirely in Photoshop and so I could not time my frames with the song.Ā
This was animated using photoshop, with each frame lasting 0.2 seconds, so the pacing of this gif is not correct. The first few frames should last a lot longer to be in time with the song.Ā
The characters mouth is not there for now as I need to animate that so that it is in sync with the music. Once this animation is moved into flash, I can add the mouth to it.
FMP Pre-Production
Design -
First thing I did was decide on how the character was going to like, thinking about whether I should use the characters actual design, or put her in something more simple and easy to draw. As it says in the image, my final decision was to simplify the characters design. The characters design allows my to include secondary action in my animation; her hair and tie will be affected by the characters movements.
Storyboard -Ā
The storyboard for my animation. As I have to also focus on syncing the animation with the music and lip syncing (something that Iāve never tried before), the character will not move around much. The pink writing are the lyrics to the song, and are there to show what point each of these movements will be happening at.
I decided that it would be best to focus on the animation in one place for now, camera panning and zooming may be added in after if I have time to. Also, as mentioned in the notes around the storyboard and also in my past posts, I do not know how long it will take to animate lip syncing, so I many not be able to create the whole of this animation.
Another thing I did was look at the mouth charts and draw out my own sketches. I read that it is best to already have the mouths you will be using drawn out, and to prepare the sequence before adding them to the animation.
Later I will need to arrange what order I will be needing to use these in so that I can easily apply them to my animation when I bring it in to flash.
FMP: Easter Holiday (Weeks 5 & 6) Review
Over the easter holiday I was able to finish the pre-production stage for my project (including finishing my storyboard and design sketches). I also got my music file and cut it down to just the part that I need.Ā
I made a start on creating the rough frames for my animation, however Iām not sure if more frames are needed or if it works well as I need to insert it in to flash and sync it up to the music.Ā
I havenāt posted any of the work I have done yet and will spend todays sessions doing so.
FMP: Week 4 Review
I have made a start to my pre-production during this week; gathering anything that may be useful to me during the unit, such as tutorials and references for lip syncing. I may have spent too much time looking at tutorials, my storyboard is not yet finished however I plan to get it done at the start of the next week so that I can move on to animating.
Renderman Discussion
Pros of making software free:
Anyone can install it and try working with it, meaning more people can gain experience with it. This possibly means that Pixar have a wider range of people to hire as there are more people who are experienced with the software.
If people uses it and it gets exposure, it could bring more attention to the company. People might invest in the company, etc, earning them money.
Cons of making software free:
May increase unemployment as employees may not be needed anymore and they arenāt making money out of the project.
Itās also non-commercial, so people canāt use it to earn money and Pixar canāt make a profit from that either.
If I had spent years developing software, I think I would be ok with it being free. The software would get more exposure and could bring more money in in the long run. If I owned the company that developed the software, I would also choose to release the software for free. Pixar is a huge company that makes a lot of money already and can take the risk of releasing software for free. If I was part of a smaller, less well-known company, however, it would be safer to have people pay for the software.
