'performative' as an insult is a repackaged ver. of how people use 'pretentious'. which is to say it's not an insult at all. both describe a person attempting to develop their taste and openness to new experiences. those that describe others as performative are not sleeping on their fire escape or reading a book on the subway or making a sandwich on the beach, but find it threatening to observe someone who is. then they assume the role of a cop and believe this person somehow needs to be publicly ridiculed which is so funny to me because don't you realize now we can all see the precise limits of your own shame? get out of this prison! what is wrong with you?
