I'm not into Korean Dramas but I've watched a few really good ones out there: My Girlfriend is A Gumiho, Full House and Boys Over Flowers. And these 3 have something in common, they are all light-hearted and funny K-dramas. Like I said, I don't really like those cry-my-heart-out ones.
But I don't mind saying that I really liked The Moon Embracing The Sun. And I always thought that Sageuks (Korean Historical Drama) are boring! This one is an exception.
I was able to finish the whole series in just 3 days! Gaaaaah~! And I make sure that I have a roll of tissue beside me. Haha! One episode/chapter takes more than an hour to finish, and it has 20 episodes. Thanks to my sister who introduced me to this K-Drama! Was sleep deprived! Haha!
13 year old Heo Yeon Woo (Yeo Jin Goo), was chosen to become the Crown Princess of Joseon, but Queen Dowager (Kim Young Ae) has other plans for the Crown Prince Lee Hwon (Kim Soo Hyun) and orders the death of Yeon Woo before their wedding. With the help of Head Shaman Jang Nok Young's (Jeon Mi Seon) black magic, the Crown Princess was killed but later on was revived by the same Shaman. She lost her memory and was adopted by Shaman Jang Nok-Young as her spiritual daughter. 8 years later, Yeon Woo returns to Joseon as Shaman Wol (Han Ga In). And despite the Head Shaman's efforts to keep Wol from meeting Hwon, who is now King of Joseon, fate brought them back together. Thus, their battle against the perpetrators began. King Hwon seeks justice for Wol, only to find out that his own flesh and blood were behind the death of his Crown Princess.
So did he order the death of his own relatives? Or did he keep their secrets? I suggest that you watch the series as well ;)
Regarding the characters and story, the drama is so effin' heavy that you are gonna pity each and everyone of the characters! Everybody has got something going on! I bawled my eyes out when Yeon Woo and Seol died! And the confrontation between Princess Min Hwa and King Hwon, I really felt sorry for them both. The Princess being so young and naive when Queen Dowager used her as an offering to intensify the black magic's power, had to live with a grave sin. If King Hwon reveals her secret to the public, the Princess will take the consequences and Yeon Woo can finally claim her throne as the rightful Queen of Joseon, something that King Hwon has yearned for. But if he keeps her secret, he'll be able to protect his sister and all the other people involved in the crime but will be forced to embrace another Queen. And did I mention that Princess Min Hwa is married to Yeon Woo's older brother? Which means that Yeon Woo's own brother married his sister's killer! And if Min Hwa's secret was revealed, Yeun Woo's brother will be punished as well even though he is unaware of his wife's crime! GAWD! King Hwon needed to make a really hard and tough decision. I just wanna hug the poor King.
The drama does not stop there! King Hwon has a brother named Prince Yang Myeong Gun who is also inlove with Yeon Woo and he feels that everything he likes is taken away from him by his own brother and later on, commits suicide (that's how I see it) so he can no longer be a threat to the King's throne and so he can love Heon Woo as much as he want. You have to pity Queen Bo Kyung too for all that she ever wanted was to be loved by King Hwon but 'til the end, she never won the King's heart due to his loyalty to Yeon Woo. She also commits suicide after realizing that eventually, her throne as the Queen of Joseon will be taken away from her. Yeun Woo's Chief Scholar dad who blamed himself for the death of his own daughter and believed so until he died was just heart breaking. And Yeon Woo's mother? Aside from speaking very softly throughout the series, all she did was to break down in tears every now and then. Haha! Pitiful! You have to feel sorry for Seol too, who have loved and served her masters very well. She gave her life protecting Yeon Woo's older brother, Heo Yeom, who was married to Princess Min Hwa. Ah, the things they do for their one-sided love! TRAGIC! Thank God we have Hyung Sun as a comic relief!
Thankfully, it had a happy ending! And I thought I'd be forever sobbing. Haha! They got married in the end! Yeon Woo became the Queen of Joseun and King Hwon's loyalty and continuing love for a dead person who turns out to be alive paid off!
Also, what's not to like in this K-Drama? Your eyes can feast on so many Oppas! Haha! The actresses are eye candies as well!
I caught the Kim Soo Hyun Syndrome by the way! Not just because he's sooooooo gorgeous but because of his superb acting too!
