Doctor Who Tatted TARDIS Doily

Nine TARDISes rest on the Earth with the colours of space-time shining through between them. Tatting is a sturdy form of lacework that has been around since the Victorian era and is nearly a lost art. It is made by tying thousands of tiny knots using a shuttle. Unlike most kinds of lace, tatting will not unravel if the lace is cut. This one-of-a-kind doily is roughly 17 inches in diameter. It is comprised of green, white, blue, and black thread, as well as two different variegated threads. Each TARDIS has eight panels (five blue and three white, indicating the windows and the “Pull to Open” sign), and a black bar with white pearlescent beads for the “Police Box” section. On top is a large iridescent bead for the TARDIS lamp. Each section of the space-time background is unique and is adorned with random beads and picots (little loops in the thread). There are four different medium beads and five different small beads, including blue, green, yellow, white, clear, and silver. Each section also has at least one jump ring to add a bit of flare and texture. The tatted TARDIS doily will look fantastic under a dish of bananas or a vase of roses in your own Whovian abode or that of your favourite geek. Alternatively, tatted lace is often framed and mounted on the wall to help preserve it against the elements.

Fruit Salad Ice Pops

Ingredients

1 peach, cut into ½-inch slices (½ cup)

2 kiwis, peeled and sliced into ¼-inch rounds

3 ounces blueberries (½ cup)

4 ounces strawberries, hulled and halved ( ¾ cup)

1 1/2 to 2 cups 100 percent white-grape juice

Directions

Arrange some of each fruit in eight 3-ounce ice-pop molds, making sure pieces fit very snugly. Pour enough juice into each mold to just cover fruit. Insert ice-pop sticks and freeze until solid, 6 hours (or up to 2 weeks).

Any type of fruit will work though!

Here's a much better photo of yesterday's attempted shot sans Meowzalina and draped collar. It's a mini watercolor painting that Laurie of @lauriescharmingdesigns charming designs sent me earlier. She's very kind and I appreciate her. She's been an online friend for a long time! We "met" while blogging. The tatted doily underneath is from the "Jasmine" plate doily set from a Dover book entitled "The Tatter's Treasure Chest, edited by Mary Carolyn Waldrep. It's found on pages 58-59 and 67. I tatted it over 20 years ago in size 10 thread. I did it in size 10 to show my students I was teaching at the time that you don't have to tat in smaller sized crochet threads to make something pretty. It's a very simple pattern that someone who has recently learned to tat could do. Years ago, when I was going through some very dark days, I decided to start a blog on one of the most beautiful things I know of - hand tatted lace. I met a very nice lady in blog land named Barb of @thefrenchelements. Barb sent me a nice package of vintage linen goodies including this antique collar with a tatted lace edging on it. I don't think Barb ever realized how much that kind gesture meant to me, but it was the beginning of brighter days ahead and a lovely online friendship. A watercolor painted gift of the heart displays the color of my desire to ease my heart's agony at this time of year. The flower-petalled doily beneath seems to whisper, "New growth and happiness will come again, my friend". #BlueOctober Blue pumpkin painted by and gifted to me from a long time blog friend, @lauriescharmingdesigns. This sweet, generous soul also sent me some painting supplies as a gift. Years ago, when one of my sisters passed away, Laurie also sent me the lovely little wire easel that her painting rests on, now. She reaches water color classes online! It's a pattern called "Pretty Petal Doily" found on page 12 of the Dover book called, Traditional Tatting Patterns, edited by Rita Weiss.
