Hide rode bike on city streets. From twilight to dusk, the wind against bare flesh must have felt nice, crisp. Though he’d soon arrived at a crime scene. Flashing lights, CCG vehicles hastily parked, emergency medics on the scene thrust pass taped barriers and into the building where attacks occurred. Being a sharp shot, caught sight of only one passing through the crowd, uninterested, head down and mindful. Everyone else apparently exhibited something of interest concerning the crisis before them. But she? But a shadow, sailing silently through the sea. It wasn’t that she was busy, that she was tired.. no, something was off. Too late was he, for she was gone when he arrived at that corner where she turned only just shy of a few minutes ago.
Their first true, official introduction was unplanned. A surprise visit alongside Special Class Marude to the first ward, main building - the place to go, the place to be. Obviously not a man of casual conversation except when it’s Yoshitoki. And he was standing alongside Yoshiko, engaged in conversation. When they approached, the four exchanged simple pleasantries. Ordinary for her, investigative for him. ( Yoshitoki and Hide got along almost too well / Marude and Yoshiko remained reserved, quietly polite and observant. )
Hide notices details that Yoshiko expects he wouldn’t. Especially when he contributes his comments on ghouls and their behavior. He has a keen eye that she remarks on often. She hasn’t stopped insisting that he may want to look into a career in the CCG with that natural sense. It’s always never taken seriously.
The RC scanners are never not brought up. Even if they’ve discussed their design and functionality a thousand times. Another thousand explanations he will want again! as he studies unbeknownst to her..
They actually don’t encounter each other much in comparison to people like Special Class Marude, Seidō, Amon, Akira, considering that her work and home are in the first ward. But when they do, he’s hardly ever without a cheerful gleam.
Once, Hide almost got a glimpse into the laboratory. Leaning over her shoulder while they stood before the doors. Yoshiko denied him entry when he asked. Visitors, non-CCG personnel, aren’t allowed pass the lobby. That also applies to assistants without consent from their supervising investigator. That she stands firm on.
Dr. Chigyō didn’t mind! - of course he didn’t mind, popping out of seemingly nowhere, eagerly willing to present his gift of knowledge to the seeking curious. But those rules are placed for a reason and Hide wasn’t granted access. It gave her the chance to discuss potential employment there again. And yet again, it was playfully rejected.
Yoshiko offers elementary answers to his questions, especially when they’re about the nature of her research. It’s political, shallow - Hide isn’t invested in that. She insist that it’s better to explain things simply than to shower the audience with jargon they wouldn’t be familiar with.
Hide got her coffee once, with sugar and cream, and saw her drink it. Naturally, her stomach turned a thousand times sideways and she offered to excuse herself only when the time was appropriate to raise little suspicion. Hide was too vigilant.
Yoshiko almost snorted out her water when Hide shared a funny ( really embarrassing ) incident about Marude one time.
Yoshiko doesn’t interview nor be interviewed. Although Hide always made sure that it wasn’t an interview - just a chat!
Ultimately, their relationship was really a tale of how destructive prideful ignorance can be. Yoshiko wasn’t careful enough with him who was hunting. Over a century-long dynasty mastered the arts of hiding in plain sight. Something, someone might have began to focus on them.. for whatever reason. but Yoshiko didn’t expect it to be during her time, using her own knowledge of the system against her.
He slipped passed her mind as smoothly as he entered. Little was mentioned of him and his disappearance excused. There were plenty of reasons as to why some don’t return as frequently as they have began visiting. ‘ A kid as smart as he would be just fine.’
Yoshiko hasn’t put the pieces together. She’s weak from everything but they’re there in her hands. Learning of Marude’s actions from Matsuri, Marude was affiliated with Hide / Hide’s persistence in learning about the CCG / His own perceptiveness.. it’s all there but other matters have clouded her ability to analyze the past mistakes she made, leading a dangerous trail behind her wake.
