I will say the focus on yearning for a "major breakthrough" via an active athlete's coming out at what some perceive to be the "highest level" of professional men's hockey is doing a disservice to those who already have taken the step to share their lived experience as queer inviduals in said environment.
Feel like there's an unwillingness to engage with not just the sport beyond an NA scope which implicitly dismisses the legitimacy and professionalism of leagues and players around the globe.
Sure, there's something to be said about the differing level of local & global impact. But while you're shining a spotlight on a mere hypothetical entity, why not at least try to also engage with the ones who don't get to walk on as big a stage?
For those unaware, here are some queer athletes involved in the area of sport known as Men's Hockey for your consideration:

it fucken WIMDY
At some point will I be banned for the crime of becoming a girl. Then wimdy shall be no more.
@voidmenace thank you! I forget to mention it much. I have been a girl for 17 months now, it’s the best and most clearly correct decision I have ever made.
I really need a feminised edit of Wimdy Fox but… I don’t think foxes have any visible secondary sex characteristics. Hmm.
oh fuck yes
