Every year, I host a festival/sleepaway camp/conference/thingy called MaxFunCon. This year, one of our guests was Tavi Gevinson. If you don’t know Tavi, she was a teenaged fashion blogging sensation, and now she’s the editor of the wonderful Rookie Magazine and a movie star to boot. I talked with her about how she navigated the pitfalls of the fashion world and found some folks worth holding on to. It’s a pretty amazing and inspiring conversation - she’s a remarkable woman. Watch!
Me: How do you define success? Tavi Gevinson: Satisfaction with both process and product, satisfaction regardless of public attention, appreciating positive attention without depending on it, ignoring negative attention that can’t help you, understanding that you are not entitled to an audience and your audience is not entitled to you.

I get glimpses of what it’s like to respond to the world honesty, instead of trying to show people someone I think they will find likable. The former, when I can do it, is rewarding

I want very badly to be good, kind, “myself” with other people. I worry that “myself” sucks, so I think about everything I’m about to say very hard, and then usually end up not saying anything at all.

When I feel like I’m dealing with something and I have no clue what to do, I think about what I would say if a friend came to me with the same issues, and it’s a lot easier to be loving, yet rational.
