Ive been wondering about stuff and i have been thinking, if there was a Splatoon movie, like a proper animated theatrical movie (not made by Illumination for the love of god), what would it be like? Would it be a simple adaptation of Splatoon 1's story mode? Would be a reference filled mashup story with too much packed into it? Would it be a slice of life tale? A story completely separate from all the lore?
For me personally, i would like to see a loose adaptation of Splatoon 1's story mode that fleshes out the characters while incorporating the fun aspects of the universe (Turf Wars, Inkling culture, music, esc.)
I think the movie should start off with showcasing and explaining the Inkling society, the culture they have, the things they like doing, the Idols, The Great Zapfish and some hints at their history. Get general audiences introduced with what the hell a Splatoon even is and show the fun stuff like Inklings battling each other out in Turf War matches. I think you can show a lot of really cool action scenes and slapstick with the various weapons and specials.
When it comes to who should be in the movie, i think its best to just stick with characters from Splatoon 1 only. That means the only idols should be Callie and Marie, as stuffing in Off the Hook would be too much for a single movie, they need their own time to shine. You could also have a few side characters from the manga but like, i dont know much about them and to be honest... i dont really care for them at all. I dont like the Splatoon manga I'm sorry.
The movie has got to follow Agent 3 and explore their character in an adaptation. Maybe show them struggling at Turf War matches and having difficulties communicating, maybe hint that their home life wasn't.... great and thats why they left when they reached 14 years old. Maybe Kaori (the orange hair Inkling girl) and John could appear and try to communicate with Agent 3 but to no avail.
It would be interesting to see Inkopolis be shown through the eyes of someone so isolated and distant from it all. I would like to see a character arc of this isolated character discovering new friends and a purpose in life and becoming stronger. Its very simple but we dont need a complex character arc for a story to work.
The inciting incident obviously has to be the Great Zapfish being stolen by the Octarians and Inkopolis going into a panic on what to do. Agent 3 spots an old man peering through a sewer grate and they follows him to Octo Valley. And then we get the big exposition dump from Cap'n Cuttlefish about the Octarians and all the other stuff. And then Kaori and John follow along and then get sucked into the conflict with the Octarians too. I would love to see the literal mascots of the franchise be fleshed out as characters and interact with each other. When people think of Splatoon, the first images that come to their heads are the Idols, Kaori and John.
Im not too sure on what the middle section of the movie could be, obviously we should see Agent 3 alongside Kaori and John battling Octarians, going through the valley and introducing Agents 1 and 2. But I'm not sure about specifics.
Now i will say, i do NOT want Octavio to fully appear right at the end. I think for the movie to work, we need Octavio's antagonistic presence and backstory. He shouldn't be there for like 10 minutes, he needs to constantly appear, either via screens, radio, scenes showing him at a base, or him face to face with Agent 3 to taunt them or stop them. We need to see Octavio talk about why he needs the Zapfish to help his people and make Agent 3 have some internal conflict about what they are doing. It would be really interesting to see propaganda about Octarians from the start of the movie, slowly turn into something more nuanced and for Agent 3 to learn more about the Octarians and become conflicted in their mind about their actions. What the Octarians are doing is bad, but they have no choice, its either steal the Inkling's only power source, or die.
The Octarians cannot be treated like one dimension villains. They can appear like that at first due to Inkling propaganda, but we need to see their motivations for their actions and the audience has to understand why they are at war with each other.
The third act definitely has to be the final mission of the story mode with the final climatic battle and the twist that Agent 1 and 2 were the Squid Sisters all along. The story ends with DJ Octavio trapped in a snow globe, vowing vengeance and the Great Zapfish rescued safe and sound. It would be nice to have the story end off with a Splatfest, either Rice vs Bread or Cats vs Dogs, and have Agent 3 and their friends compete in it while the credits roll.
In terms of animation I would like to see a CG 3D look with some stylisation in the movement and aesthetic. Think Sonic: Night of The Warehog mixed in with Splatoon's iconic 2D artwork. Or the Spider-Verse movies and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and how those movies blend together 3D and 2D animation.
For the music, there's gotta be lots of rock and techno/electronic tracks, remixes of songs from Splatoon 1's multiplayer battles and story mode.
Also, Calamari Inkantation better sound like this. I dont want the whole soundtrack to be orchestral tracks as it doesnt fit Splatoon, but i want them to go all out for Calamari Inkantation.
For sequels because i know Nintendo would love to captalise on a movie trilogy, I would like Splatoon 2 to be based on Octo Expansion and follow Agent 3 meeting Agent 8 and introducing Off the Hook with various flashback sequences and character moments as Agent 8 goes through the Deepsea Metro. And for a Splatoon 3, an adapation of ROTM with the introduction of Deep Cut, the Splatlands and doing a climatic finale. (I do not want an adapation of Octo Canyon, it would make for a shit movie because the story mode itself is shit LMAO)
ANYWAYS! These were just some ideas i randomly had at like 12am and wanting to ramble for a bit. I am curious to see what you guys want out of a Splatoon movie. I dont know if we would even get one but I could totally see a tv show or mini series.
