When women are unable to access menstrual products, it can greatly affect their mental health. For example, someone who uses menstrual products can continue to work or go to school without having to worry about bleeding through their clothes. Even though many people are comfortable with talking about periods, it can still be embarrassing when someone tells you that you bled through your clothes. Women may also have to call off from work and miss school days because they can’t afford menstrual products.Â

Government assistance programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC) — which is designed to provide nutritional support for children and pregnant or postpartum mothers — cannot be used to purchase menstrual products.
The Unequal Price of Periods
If the government taxes menstrual products and labels them as a luxury, they should help less unfortunate women. They shouldn’t have to choose between spending money on food or menstrual products. Without menstrual products, these women could be susceptible to infections. Since periods are also seen as taboo, not being able to afford menstrual products can greatly affect a woman’s mental health.Â
It also establishes a demonstration grant program to support the provision of free menstrual products on campuses of institutions of higher education and permits elementary and secondary schools to use certain grants to provide menstrual products to students.
Menstrual Equity Act For All of 2021
The introduction of this act is incredible because it means that the government is finally listening. If schools are able to provide menstrual products for their students at no additional cost, students who are struggling will be able to access menstrual products at school. The act may not be abolishing the period tax, but it’s a great start in making period products more accessible. Â
An Interview with Friends
W: How does the fact that there aren’t any menstrual products in our bathrooms affect y’all?
A: It makes things complicated for me. Instead of just going to the bathroom and grabbing the products, I have to ask my friends if I can borrow some of their products. If they don’t have anything on them, then I’m forced to ask the nurse and most of the time she isn’t here.
M: The products the nurse gives out aren’t free either. You have to pay $1.25 and the pads are very thin. They’re basically as thin as panty liners, so they don’t fit everyone’s needs.
A & W: Really?! We didn’t know that.
M: I only knew because a friend of mine had asked me for money to buy a pad from the nurse.
D: Every woman goes through menstruation and when the school makes us pay for menstrual products and doesn’t allow our parents to bring us things makes me feel as if it has something to do with gender. If guys were the ones to go through menstruation, they would probably get a few days off a month and they would have menstrual products readily available in bathrooms.
