“I’m always right.” He said with a bright smile. He wasn’t trying to be cocky–alright, maybe he was, just a little. He liked being right–who didn’t? It was an awesome feeling. Even if it was Tay, he liked being told he was right. “No glaring at me. I guess we could glare at each other, but it wouldn’t be very good for the pictures I don’t think. They’d be wondering why the hell we’re going on a date if we’re in such an awful mood.”

“Don’t get cocky, now. You aren’t always right.” She teases, a smile on her lips. She didn’t think they’d ever be this nice to one another again. She didn’t even think the’d ever really speak again. The way things ended hadn’t really been fair for either of them, although she didn’t regret anything she said to him. “Alright, fine.. Although I’m pretty sure I could out glare you,”

“Only because you’ve never learned how to take one.” Alex said with a sly smile. “If you learned how to take a compliment, Tay, you might like them a little bit better.” He was just teasing her, but he was also being a little bit serious. She wasn’t the type to take a compliment lying down. She always had to fight it, but Alex supposed he liked that kind of spunk in someone. It was refreshing to not have someone roll over and accept every little thing you said about them. “No, but I think we’d agree I’m the bigger talker out of us.”

He was right about that.. Tay wasn’t one for compliments, and she had a hard time just accepting them. Besides, it wasn’t like she needed self assurance.She didn’t need anyone to convince her that she was good enough. She’d much rather do it herself. “I’m not exactly sure what I’m supposed to say to that, Gaskarth. We both know you’re right...” She shrugs, before a chuckle passes her lips. “True, you are the bigger talker. Although I planned on just glaring at you the entire time, so my conversational skills will probably be sub-par.”

“Literally, same, minus the beer since I’m not exactly allowed to drink. But handing around with friends sounds like a much better option.”

“Dude, you can’t drink? How old are you?” Tay asks, with a light chuckle, “Hanging out with friends will always be a better option, honestly.”

“It was alright. Um, I don’t really have fun at parties like these.”

“I’m not the biggest fan of parties like that. I’d rather just be chilling out back home with my friends and a beer or something, y’know?”

“Hey, it never hurts to try. Flattery gets you everywhere and more–sometimes. You can’t blame a guy for givin’ it a shot.” Alex was glad they were talking and her tone had lost most of her barb and he was glad for that. It was easier when they got along–Tay always got him in a certain way that many other people did. He missed being able to talk her about things; he didn’t really have too many people in his life he could confide in, except maybe Jack. He grinned a little when she laughed, rubbing the back of his head with his free hand. “As long as you know.”

Tay nods with a light laugh, before shaking her head a bit. “Not here, Alex. I’m not about the compliments.”She pulled her hand through her hair, looking over at the male. She was slowly relaxing, slowly getting nice again. She missed when they had actually been close. He understood her in ways that she herself didn’t understand. It was so different for her to not have him around, and while she had grown accustomed to it, she would’ve liked to be his friend again. “I do recall. Although I also know I’m quite the talker myself, and I don’t think you’ll be the only one speaking all night.”

“Sounds like quite the party. Did you at least have fun?”

“Well I think the gym and I are no longer on good terms after this.”

“Yeah, well, at least you don’t have to go back now. Besides, it’s not like you need to go to the gym. You basically just gave yourself an excuse to stay home and watch movies.”

I went to the gym for the first time in ages yesterday and I don’t know what I did but I must have lifted something wrong because I screwed my back up really bad. I can hardly move without being in pain. Just my luck. Guess I’ll just stay in bed for the next couple days.

“Good. You’re too pretty to be scowling at me all night ‘cause I was a prick.” It was nice to feel the tension lighten. It would’ve been way too awkward if they’d been upset with each other the entire night, stonewalling the whole outing. Not to mention, he couldn’t imagine the whole publicity thing going down too well if they both looked like they were absolutely fucking miserable. True, it wasn’t the best of situations. Yeah, it would probably still be a little awkward. But Alex was willing to put forth the effort and it seemed like Tay was too. It wasn’t an ideal situation for either of them–but it could’ve been way worse. Alex would’ve ended up with someone he didn’t like. Sure, things might be awkward with Tay now, but they had history. “Well–we can try and keep it casual. It’s not like we’re going to some four star restaurant and we’re both dressed up.” He laughed a little at the absurdity of the idea as he finally offered her his hand to take. “I like burgers more, anyways. And Tay?” Alex asked, looking at her with a sly grin. “I don’t get tired of hearing my own voice. I figured you knew, but I thought I’d let you know for sure.”

“Compliments will get you nowhere, Gaskarth.” Tay grins, glad that things were seeming to calm between them. Being angry and upset was exhausting, and she’d much rather things go back to a comfortable friendship. She couldn’t pretend nothing happened between them, but she also couldn’t pretend she didn’t miss the way they were before they had even started dating. Plus, this was a publicity stunt, and she knew that looking miserable the entire time, and recounting every time he’d hurt her ( not to mention what she did to him ) just didn’t sound appealing to her anymore. This wasn’t ideal, but she was sure that they could work through this awkwardness and become friends again. She took his hand with a wry grin, “I figured as much. I do know you well enough to know you wouldn’t enjoy that anymore than I would.” She looked up when he said her name, before a loud laugh departed her lips. “Oh believe me, I know.”

“Are you?” Alex asked. He was glad to see her smile. He’d missed it. Things wouldn’t be too bad if he could keep Tay smiling and laughing. It’d look real and he’d feel a lot less like an asshole. He couldn’t really reset what had happened between them before, but he could try and be a better dude going forward. He wasn’t sure if that would really help–but hell, he was willing to try with Tay. Even though he was insanely into Ashton, he wouldn’t ever forget the time he’d have with Tay; he desperately wanted them to at least be friends, even if the romantic part of their relationship was over. “Yeah, I mean. It’s different? I’m not usually a guy who goes on a lot of dates, so…”

“Yeah, totally.” Tay chuckles, looking up at him. The air between them seemed to get thinner the moment she began joking with him, and she saw him relax slightly. Sure, she had been hurt by the way things between them ended. It hurt that what they had ended at all. But she was getting over that ( writing a few songs about it helped out a lot ). Alex was a good guy. He always had been. She wasn’t about to make both of them miserable because she was still upset that he left her. All good things come to an end, and she accepted that. It would be considerably more enjoyable around here if she wasn’t stuck not knowing who to talk to or what to say. “I do remember that. I’m also not a girl who goes on a lot of dates. This is much more formal than I like things to be.”

“Well–no, but I try to be a positive person.” That was true at least. Or well, he just knew what white lies to tell to make people feel better. It was probably the latter, honestly. He tried to be an honest person, but it didn’t always work out for him. In fact, more often than not, it tended to blow up in his face. But he could tell she was beginning to relax a little, so maybe it had worked. “No, it’s not a big deal. I mean–I guess it’s a little awkward…but why else would they pair us up?”

“Alex, I’m fucking with you.” Tay smiles, in response to his statement about being a positive person. “I know it’s going to be fine. None of this feels like it’s going to be fine, but I know it is.” At least she’s trying. It felt like it had been so long since they were even cordial. She’d be lying if she said she didn’t miss it, and Tay was usually quite blunt about-- well, everything. Sure, people got upset with her for it, but brutal honesty was better than being a liar. “Yeah... It’s just weird, doing this kind of stuff. We didn’t even go on many real dates while we were dating.”

“It’ll be fine.” Alex stated softly. Okay, maybe he wasn’t totally sure if everything was going to be okay, but he was trying to be positive. It helped in those situations, right? Things would only be awkward if you made them awkward–that was Alex’s prime thought. If he acted like things were totally fine, then they probably were. “That’s how I feel. Now come on, smile a little, Tay–it’s a fake date, not your last supper.”

“You sure about that?” She asks, looking up at him. She had always been so adventurous. She didn’t know what she was so afraid of, or why she was so afraid of it. This just didn’t seem like her. She needed to stop though. To stop worrying, to stop freaking out about this. It was Alex. This would all be fine. It all had to be fine. She wasn’t going to let him break her down again, not after the way things ended. She let herself smile a small bit, nodding, “Yeah, you’re right. It’s not a big deal-- right?”

“Me neither.” Alex admitted. “I guess weirder things have happened to be totally honest.” It was awkward to be around her, to be honest. He wasn’t expecting to be around Tay ever again. At least, not personally. He supposed he would be dealing with her professionally, but this was way different. He could tell she was tense–he was tense too. It was definitely a situation he didn’t like being in. Alex hated when things got awkward. “But let’s just get through it, okay?”

Tay shrugs softly, trying not to look so scared, and so uncomfortable. She hated this, the awkwardness that came with being around him. They had been so close, he had meant so much to her. She wasn’t sure she had ever really let go of that. But that was beside the point. This wasn’t a second chance for them, and she didn’t want it to be. “Yeah-- yeah, I guess.” She never thought she’d have to do this, if she was being honest. And she never wanted to do this. She couldn’t believe she was being forced to do this.

Alex smoothed out his shirt. Damn, he hadn’t remembered the last time he’d been out with Tay. Things hadn’t exactly ended on good terms and he was sure she didn’t wanna be around him, but it had to be done. Waving back at her, he nodded. “Yeah, okay. Let’s get this over with.” I’m so sorry. He hadn’t been the best to Tay and he was sure she definitely held a grudge…or three. He probably still had some residual feelings deep down, but he wasn’t about to admit it. He liked how things were going with Ashton–he liked Ashton. Even if they’d fucked up last night, he was determined to fix them, so he wanted to be on his best behavior for this date. “Let’s go. Burgers? Smile, look happy, get our picture taken and we’re done. Okay?”

Tay ran a hand through her hair, trying not to look as utterly terrified as she felt. She didn’t even know why she was so scared, she just was. It didn’t make sense. This should be easy, it used to be easy. She didn’t know why she felt like she was suffocating in his presence, but it was starting to become a bit problematic. Why did this still hurt? She didn’t feel the same way she used to about him. She wasn’t in love with him or anything, She was just hurt. She didn’t know how else to deal with seeing him, than to be mad and sad. The small brunette nodded at his words, biting down on her lower lip. “Yeah, sounds good... Although I can’t believe we’re doing this.”
